"Winning"

You know the kind of article I'm talking about. You see it year in, year out. "Game x Vs Game Y - a graphics comparison" "Which game wins this year's holiday season?" "5 reasons to buy/not to buy Game X" "Why this game reigns supreme/fails" "Why you should/shouldn't care about this game" Hell, you even get it with consoles and PCs, but you get the idea.

So, we have these articles which apparently help us with the decision making process if we're in two minds about what game to buy. You click through and read the article which you then summarise 1 of 3 things about it:

Scenario 1) the article is very much in favour of this game and says lots of nice things about it without showing you the other side of the coin to the point of aggressiveness. This one is extremely common. What you see in the comments section of articles of this nature are fanboys basking in the eternal glory of this game and putting down the game's competitors and declaring it game of the year because what this article did was justify their purchase. And you also see some people who either didn't like the game or didn't buy it explaining why they don't like it or didn't buy it or spouting off some nonsense about the game being mediocre anyway.

Scenario 2) The article is completely aggressive in everything it says and seems to be total flame bait and the writer couldn't care less what people think. This one is more common than you think. These ones usually spend all their time attacking and hating on a game rather than praising games. People wouldn't get sparked up if they're saying nice things about a game. So the comments sections in these tend to be pretty angry, actually. More criticising the writer of the article than anything else. There will be a lot of disagreements here and there with the odd "1337 T3h PWN4GE" guy who believes everything the writer says and comments with an illegible rant which basically slams the game in question and gets lots of people pee'd off.

Scenario 3) The article states some completely unbiased points both for and against a game (yes every game has it's good and bad points). The writer has clear evidence that they have actually played the game and come to these conclusions. The comments box is friendly and you can have a joke and a laugh with other users and everything is full of merriness and joy. I exaggerate, of course but you get the idea. These articles are very few and far between. No one can complain about these ones, They may dispute some of the points but there is no reason why they should be mad. It's the writer's own opinion which was gained by playing the game, everyone has an opinion and no one's is better so you should respect that. These types of articles make no mention of other games. They show focus on the task at hand and don't get side-tracked by comparing them to other games.

Now, it's human nature to want the best you can get for your money. I'm here to say there is no best. There are only alternative options which have both good and bad points. I hope people realise this and stop asking which one won. They're not in competition with one another.

I say this as MW3 releases in about a week and it is constantly going to be compared with battlefield 3 which came out this week. People are going to be asking "which game won?". I have an answer to those people. Both of them won. They're both gonna see great sales figures and enjoy great critical reception from reviewers and the people who play them will like them because the games are both good at doing different things. Okay?

Just want to thank anyone who read my blog and please comment below, sharing your thoughts...

THANK YOU, there is no winner but ofcourse mw3 ftw

two types of these articles. Reviews that deal strictly with the title at hand. No comparatives and only focusing on the pros/cons of that game. Same goes for the constructive criticism that would follow.

The second type would deal with comparatives. This is where the opinions of people would come into play. Conversing back and forth in a civil manner to hash out why one person prefers one title to another and vice versa.

In the end, this is N4G and we are not going to see either of these happen any time soon. It is good to dream though.

Logic wins!

Not that this will put a end to the fanboy wars, but it had to be said.

Sometims gaming discussions can get a little too agressive but a mature debate is very much welcome. The fact is this is a gaming website and arguments on such things will happen. Which is no different then people arguing over football, films, books, music and television.

TopDudeMan5308d ago

Well, yeah, but we don't need to be such kids about it. If you disagree with something, you tell me why and then I explain why I disagree with you. If no resolution is reached then we just forget about it.

The point I'm making is that comparing two games in a "news" article is what causes the arguments - and pretty fierce ones at that.

I can see that the real point of this article was to point out that BF3 is obviously better than MW3.

There is no best, there is only different types of games that suit different types of people...just like spaghetti sauces.

LightofDarkness5308d ago

Nobody says my spaghetti sauce isn't the best and gets away with it, you'll rue this day!! :p

Three cheese marinara ftw. Anyone who says otherwise should just go back to Chef Boy-ar-dee.

Just kidding.

each game belongs to different tastes. Theres no such thing as the best game since everyone has a different opinion

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing12d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9212d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit12d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing12d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9212d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
