Sony Drops the Ball On KLLZONE 2 Marketing

Was it me or did we not see any KILLLZONE 2 advertisement during the
SUPERBOWL? Sony recently announced that they would be initiating a
KILLZONE 2 marketing blitz but I guess the Superbowl with all the blitz
packages was enough as Sony definitely dropped the ball.

Please explain how Sony, who clearly struggled during the holidays
with their exclusive software sales not utilize the Superbowl as a
marketing platform, are you kidding me? The Arizona Cardinals took the
Pittsburgh Steelers down to the wire in one of the most exciting
Superbowl games in recent history yet Sony refused to take advantage of
this global marketing opportunity.

Not to sound like Sony needs to copy the actions of the competition
but you can best believe that Microsoft would have taken full advantage
of this opportunity. In fact you can bet you would have seen Halo ads
high and low with Masterchief action sequences displaying him blowing
through Covenant forces during the biggest NFL game of the season.
Brand recognition only goes so far and Sony really needs to understand
that. Sometimes going the extra mile is what’s needed when you’re eight
millions consoles behind your nearest competition.

Even though KILLZONE 2 is on pace to register impressive sales for
it’s February 27th release date there has been no real noticable
marketing for this revolutionary title. Like a very successful maketing
director once told me “There is no such thing as too much marketing.”
Arrogance is a vey ugly trait and if you’re not hunble it can come back
to bite you hard.

Sony get off your behinds and go the extra mile for your flagship titles. They deserve it.

...a Superbowl ad would've been great for Killzone 2.

The dropped the ball on that one.

The ball being a bowling ball.

The target being their foot.

I disagree. The Super Bowl is a huge audience, the majority of whom do not play video games. The result is that paying for 30 seconds to run a single commercial a single time during the Super Bowl costs millions of dollars, and you're marketing at an audience of whom the majority will never care about your product. That money would better be spent running hundreds of commercials during shows that have a high gamer-attach rate (so-to-speak), like a lot of programs on Comedy Central, Spike TV, or G4.

People say that Sony dropped the ball not advertising Killzone 2, well, when's the last time Microsoft didn't go absolutely bonkers advertising a Halo game? And now that they've got one (Halo Wars) coming out in the same month as the Super Bowl, guess what: they don't advertise their game during the Super Bowl either.

Neither company dropped the ball, they just recognize that paying millions of dollars to advertise your niche product a single time (and video games are a niche product to the Super Bowl audience at large) is probably a waste of money; money that could be better spent advertising multiple times to an audience more likely to be engaged by your product.

I believe you're thinking about that all wrong. Sure there are a lot of people watching the Superbowl who are not gamers, but what you should really be thinking about is how many gamers are there out there that DO watch the Superbowl.

idiot catches the ball on being an idiot...
killzone2 isnt like halo or gears or final fantasy noone knows what killzone is therfore they would air the commercial people would see and be like 'oh thats awesome' then they wake up the next morning and forget about it so basically they would just be throwing 5million away

The SuperBowl is not the place to advertise a mature rated video game. People of all ages watch the super bowl and its commercials. It's a good idea Sony did not air any killzone ads during that specific time otherwise tons of people would have been pissed at them.

And make a blog about Halo Wars or GTA IV DlC didn't have a ad neither

I wouldn't pay millions upon millions for a 30 second ad that isn't guaranteed to reach the target audience.

I would think that I am a target audience, but I didn't watch the commercials because I was too drunk. I agree with Sony on this one.
