Raz Review: "There have been comparisons to inFamous already, and
indeed Prototype is very similar. It's an open world superhuman
adventure, and your abilities can be upgraded and added to as the game
progresses. There's no shortage of these, either - you can fly helis,
pilot APCs, even pick up and use any weapon; though a grenade launcher
is sort of wimpy compared to the incredible weapons you can morph your
body into. If you prefer a bit of stealth, you can consume people along
with their abilities, memories, and appearances; using them as camo to
hide or infiltrate.
If Alex Mercer and Cole fought it out in a
duel...Alex would literally eat Cole for breakfast. This is not a karma
game, where you get to choose your moral path; you're a monster, plain
and simple. A nightmarishly powerful monster. The problem is that this makes the character and story far more one-dimensional, uninspired and uninteresting.
It's still fun - your abilities in this game are godlike, and throwing cars at helicopters in particular is a hoot. The writing is terrible, and there's no motivation or
character development beyond a desire to find out what happened and get
revenge. The Web of Intrigue is interesting - memories you absorb from
key targets that reveal bits and pieces.
But
it's not really about the story. It's about
dashing around New York, jumping off buildings, soaring over rooftops,
sprinting up walls, and trying to beat every challenge on Gold;
generally wreaking tons of mindless mayhem everywhere you go. Hey,
you're a walking biological weapon, what did you expect? If you liked
inFamous, you'll probably like Prototype. It's essentially the same thing, with more firepower and less plot. But you can probably find it at a discount."
