Sony's Biggest Mistake

First, I'll start off by saying I know this would've made the ps3 really expensive,  but these are just my ideas.

1. Graphics card
Sony originally  planned to use 2 cell chips, one for gpu and one for cpu, had they done that, we would've seen an ultimate ps3. But instead they went with nvida's slightly modified version of a 7800GTX at the last minute. Right now, the ps3's cpu is theoretically more powerful than the 360's cpu, and the 360 theoretically has a more powerful GPU than the ps3's RSX.

In my opinion, ps3 exclusives are going to be the best looking games despite the "inferior gpu" because the cell processor really helps take the load off the gpu and it really goes along well with the RSX. Like I said before, if Sony had used a modified version of the cell for the gpu like the originally planned, they would have the ultimate system. But, we only see these good graphics on ps3 exclusives, because small multiplatform companies will have a hard time develping throughout the ps3's entire life, because they don't have the time to learn to code for the ps3 well, but then again, you see cryengine,  and you say wow, this might make developing so much easier.

Nice little article!

If only Sony had gone with 2 Cell processors and scratched the Nvidia 7800GTX. But then again, its already bad enough trying to program 1 cell, imagine developers having to program 2 cells to symmetrically work together. Although it sounds good, two cell Cpus would have caused more problems and trail and error for the PS3, even possibly raising the cost of the PS3 from Day1 (would you have paid $800 for a PS3 on launch?)With two cells we would probably just start seeing quality games after 4 years. Sony ultimately made the right decision. At least we have 1 Cell. What if they decided to go with a basic dual-core CPU or something less advanced?

Well, a GPU is a GPU. If Sony had used another cell, it wouldn't really have been that much harder to code.

In lets say a game like Uncharted 2, I would assume that the cell CPU in the ps3 actually does a good number of the calculations that are meant for the gpu because its so fast at doing them.

gamesR4fun6103d ago

was add an extra 512 of ram n give it a gig rit woulda blown the 360 rit out of the water...
n the cost woulda been negligible.

satyanjoy6023d ago

well said- this same happens to sega saturn. Super powered hardware with equally super impossible to understand and code.. I think in future Sony or any other console developer should also work on some IDE - which will minimize the complexity of initial learning phase and make it easier for smaller developer to write innovative games within their budget -(time and money)

"Sony originally planned to use 2 cell chips, one for gpu and one for cpu, had they done that, we would've seen an ultimate ps3. But instead they went with nvida's slightly modified version of a 7800GTX at the last minute. "

As far as I know Sony at first thought that one Cell could do both CPU as well as the GPU tasks. Then they found out it couldn't work, so last minute they had to buy a pretty standard PC GPU and get it in.

The 360 GPU was special build and got its 2nd die with 10MB Ram to have 4 x AA 'for free' aka no hit on the GPU.

thor6103d ago

No I think he's right about the 2 Cell chips, but very good point about the free AA (I think it's just 2x AA but still). This is the #1 reason that people say 360 multiplats are "superior" because the PS3 games are forced to use quincunx which blurs the image a little bit.

Still the graphics card in the 360 is just more powerful in general. Sony have been really stupid not to realise that in order to get great graphics, you need a great graphics card. Put one in from the start and you'd have Killzone 2 level graphics in licenced shovelware games.

I don't know if you read my blog about how blu-ray is not needed for games... well here is another scenario. In my blog, I mentioned how there are much bigger bottlenecks than disk space restricting game quality. In this case, the graphics card is a much bigger bottleneck to graphical quality than the processor. The cell is overkill - I used the analogy before of a Ferrari versus a Yugo when you're driving to the shops... can't go faster than the speed limit so the Ferrari is all flash and you actually won't get there much quicker..

Thank you... someone who understands... try telling this to the fanboys who attacked me for saying:

i think the ps3 GPU is doing a good job

randomwiz6103d ago

I bet the cell is doing half the calculations meant for the gpu

thor6103d ago

Nothing's "meant" for the GPU; it's just that in every graphics tutorial there is, they're always talking about "taking the load off the CPU" by doing things like skinning, animation, pre- and post-processing on the GPU. It just requires a different, nonstandard approach. Coupled with this is the fact that the cell is very difficult to code for just doing "odd jobs" like these; it's better suited to very repetitive calculations and it's very difficult to code and even more difficult to squeeze all of the data to and fro between the graphics card and the cell with limited bandwidth.

I feel Sony's mistake was making a cpu with Toshiba and IBM for HD streaming on tv's, and then sticking it in PS3 to save on overall corporate pruduction costs. Then forcing BD to corner HD format industry. It ended up being so expensive they had to pass up on Nvidia's new 8000 series, and going a gen backwards to save money. The difrence in GPU's on consoles is basically that the xbox gpu is almost a full gen ahead of the PS3's.

Despite many legit and proven exclusive games showing the PS3's power. I feel a lot of that is art direction. We've seen many top notch devs that have been at it forever struggle way too much on PS3 imo.

In my view the PS3 is too full of corproate agenda. It makes sense since the PS3 is basically where the entire Sony industry meets. Sony movies, tv's, recivers, formats etc. all end up going through the PlayStation. But it has to be a gaming machine first. Sony depends more on PS then they like to admit. And they've lost an incredible and upredictable amount of market share.

Right before the PS3 launched Sony was going through a litle financial trouble. We can argue all day weather we got PS3 the way it should've, but I have yet to hear a good argument saying the "trojan horse" trick failed. Sony won the format war. Cell is going to end up on next-gen tv's. Sony will benefit from that.

But following this logic.... MS is recovering from a unpopular OS. Xbox can't catch up to the Wii. And despite many things, PS3 is right there with xbox. MS is having a litle trouble with this new hardware expedition(zune, xbox). I hope MS has a very clear goal of what they want. And I hope that goal is catering to the "hardcore". Otherwise we're going to see another console with more corporate agenda then high tech inside it.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing10d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9210d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit10d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing10d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9210d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
