Will Nintendo Kill the Casual Market Can the Others Save it

A little thought just crossed my mind while browsing today and thinking about my dust collecting Wii which I bought extra controllers for and luckily got a free wii fit for otherwise I may regret the purchase more.

Is Nintendo going to kill the casual market and can either Sony or MS pickup the torch and keep it lit.

One of my thoughts is this demographic seems to keep buying as shown with Wii sports resort sales followed by Wii Fit and then just dance as well as others keep strong.  But how long are these really short replayability games (I can't speak for just dance have not tried) going to keep the market going.  I found when we first got it everyone of our friends and family that came over that had not tried it really liked it and had fun but never really wanted to play it again after the 1st or 2nd visit.  Some even went as far as getting their own and other then the kids no one plays it anymore.  I feel like I have helped with the hype and helped sell some units but from what I can tell none have them have bought many games.

Truly though how long will people keep buying this stuff before they say enough is enough and move on to another hobby??  I know unless Nintendo can really wow me and I can try it first hand and see repayable value to it I'm not putting another dime into Nintendo.

Now on to the new stuff does it have the power to take some of the steam away from Nintendo and keep the casual market interested.  Xbots will disagree (yes I took a dig) But I think PS3 has the best value as many people are upgrading to HD tv's and the blue ray inclusion is pretty nice.  Plus the functionality of the move seems quite cool now that we have seen more accurate demonstrations.  IF they bundle it right it could be a console seller if the price is right.  With the sales #'s of things like rock band dj hero etc. I sometimes wonder if people don't care so much about that.  Even thru the troubling times Nintendo kept selling but they do it all separately so maybe people didn't notice how much they were actually spending.  With PS3 I think they will have a console bundle with everything which could scare people.

Natal I'm not so sure about but we really have not seen it in live action so I won't go into to much detail until we see what it really has to offer.  I'm looking forward to E3 to see what they do.  Hopefully they stop showing video's of celebrities and start actually showing us factual stuff and not just fluffy BS.  I won't hold my breath MS doesn't seem to care what they do and for some reason people keep eating up their products.  But I digress.

As always I'm no writer just like gaming and having intelligent conversation and not fanboy wars so give me some feed back and some of you're own thoughts.  If you like please give me bubbles I find I want to chat more in this open environment but run out of the ability to do so on my own posts.

It's become my fear that the videogame industry are slowly changing to making games for people not interested in what would be considered in the last 30 years as a 'videogame'. A lot of people play 'videogames' now, all ages, thanks to the Wii, DS and the constant sport simulations.
But, I ask; "Is that a videogame?" I don't believe it is, it's just reversing back from everything gaming accomplished from Pong, which ironically, was a virtual game of ping pong.

I also disagree with Facebook 'games', because the game never ends, games such as Farmville have no 'ending', no narrative, no objective. It is virtually pointless in playing the game and the scary thing? Industry veterans are supporting this kind of thing and it's becoming the future of gaming.

I certainly hope the game industry stop reversing soon. I guess I'm a bit old fashioned, but I'm beginning to get fed up with these disposable online shooters, of which is the SECONDARY part of the videogame package, the BONUS, not what you should be buying that game for, which SHOULD be the singleplayer. Not 4 maps and 10 guns, "Have fun".

So, I fear so much for the future of gaming. The next generation, because I'm really thinking it won't cater to me.

Many people seem to love the FPS saying I get so much playing time out of them. But it's playing time doing the same thing getting the same result over and over. Other then some leveling up and some new abilities the game doesn't change over 30 hours of game play. I much prefer an 8-10 hour God Of War where something progresses. Or a final fantasy that just engulfs you for hours of compelling story and characters. Facebook well I've never seen the point to those either I am a little disappointed to see one of my favorite games civilization make the move their but like everything the mighty dollar rules supreme

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit14d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
