Modern Warfare 2 - One Huge Complaint

Ok, I'm going to make this short & sweet since I have class in 10 minutes.

Last night, I purchased Modern Warfare 2 at midnight, and even though I had a law test at 8am this morning, I still stayed up to 4am to play it because, frankly, I couldn't stop. It's that good.

With how good the game is though, I only have one minorly huge complaint - the sound - more explicitly - the gunfire.

Is it just me, or does it sound like you're shooting cap guns in this game? Everything is so well done, the explosions, the music, the dialogue - EVERYTHING... but the gunfire.

I started with the Famas and repeatedly had to ask my friends if the weapon I was wielding was silenced. Real guns do not sound like that. I have been in the military and have fired an M4 & M16 - among others - and in reality they sound nothing like they do in Modern Warfare 2.

My friend, of course, shot down my opinion and said that all the weapons were recorded... But if they were, what the hell were they shooting out of them - blanks???

I have a new, top of the line, Yamaha 5.1 Surround Sound System and couldn't wait to feast my ears on the sounds of war Modern Warfare 2 represents, but in this aspect... I couldn't be more disapointed.

So far, the only 2 games that have done it perfectly, gunfire wise that is, are Socom Confrontation & Battlefield Bad Company. In Battlefield - rifles have that distinctive 'crack', that's absent from Modern Warfare 2. In Socom, the weapons are so mean and loud that when you hear a firefight, you KNOW someone has died, they just sound visceral to the point of me wanting to avoid where it's coming from (especially when I have the volume cranked).

But this minor complaint aside, Modern Warfare 2 is an amazing game. Possibly even Game of the Year. I love Uncharted 2 but this may give it a run for its money.

Back to the topic of sound - what do you guys think? Are you satisfied with it or do you agree that the gunfire should sound more like gunfire and less like a Hollywood sound effect. Please, comment below.

You may want to check your center channel out. I thought the sound was kinda weak too and when I went to listen to the center channel there was no sound output!!! I have only seen a few other cases of this but the game just came out. If your center channel is fine then I guess something is wrong with mine, but it works for everything else...

Not to mention that the console versions play in 600p still.

"I love Uncharted 2 but this may give it a run for its money."
.....what...what are you doing? This is just BEGGING for some pointless comments. You should have said it was your favorite game this year and stopped there. Just saying.

I based that line off the multiplayer only. I just finished the single player and I can say that this game should NOT win game of the year.

It's honestly the worst story ever and once the Russians invaded I just couldn't take it seriously anymore. I had to watch the loading scene between the levels twice because I couldn't believe the stupidity of it at first. That would be like as if a Canadian gunmen shot up a mall and we invaded them over it. Absolutely retarded.

Also, I was expecting the airport scene to be a poignant plot point, but it looks like I expected too much. Infinity Ward put it there for sheer shock value and I found it to be extremely offensive and gratuitous - especially in light of recent tragedies such as the Mumbai & Fort Hood shootings. I sincerely hope that impressionable, young kids don't get any ideas from this scene because if something comes of it, say goodbye to video games as we know them and say hello to censorship not unlike what we see in Australia.

So to conclude:

Modern Warfare 2 - (Arguably) Best Multiplayer Ever Made
Uncharted 2 - (Arguably) Best Single Player Experience Ever Crafted

I love them both.

And for the record, Uncharted 2 was my favorite game this year because I hold single player experiences above multiplayer. It's story is better than 95% of movies, let alone video games.

You know my brother and I are bigtime gun freaks.
You said you was in the military so you know gunfire like I do too!
Gunfire is actually a big part of my online strategy. I count bullets and I like to be able to determine what gun is being fired.

You are so right about the sound work in socom confrontation and battlefield bad company! Im glad you noticed how important it is and how much immersion it can bring.

I havent played modern warfare 2 yet but judging by cod4mw it is really shallow with a kind of plastic monotone click. you can determne whats being fired only by fire rate like when a ak 47 is being fired and there are gaps in between them. If you wanna get past that little dissapointment I would suggest you pretend that they are using different bullets than other shooters. not little rubber bullets
but little none the less. lol!

Also bro, You cant beat the pistol in uncharted 2. Thats the star of the whole show right there.

i realized that its same with operation flshpoint 2 you dont feel like your firing th bullets they sound muffled life somone 20 feet ahead of you is firing blanks on the other side of a door

Jinxstar6032d ago (Edited 6032d ago )

I too was in the military and have that same complaint... but not just with this game. With just about every movie and game that has ever been releases minus a few rare exceptions. I can think of one that when I saw it I was so freaking happy. Int he movie collateral Tom Cruise shoots some guy in the alley and it sounded sweet.

However if there had been gunfire that loud and real the whole movie I would have been deaf after words. You should know what it's like to shoot a weapon for more then 10 rounds without ear protection. It hurts. They probably do record them then turn the decibels down about 90%.

Have you tried messing with the sound FX volume and stuff? Might be something to try. I agree that it's unrealistic but then again... How many movies get it right? How many games? how many anything could possibly get the sound of a bomb going off right?

In basic training, I didn't wear my earplugs during the "daytime defense course" (or called something very similar). 7 guys lined up in concrete foxholes and had 3 magazines to fire as fast as possible at about 20 targets popping up in front of us simulating an attack. Because of that day the hearing in my right ear is permanently damaged. Gunfire is loud and should be reflected like that in games & movies but unfortunately never is.

The sound in Collateral and Heat (to an extent) is amazing.

Jinxstar6032d ago

Yeah I remember one of the first weapons ranges I went to. Where they fired an AT4 and a claymore just to show us. That was pretty cool. I left my earplugs out for those just to know... Felt like an idiot afterwards =P Fraking loud. Still though the first time you see, hear and feel a 50 cal tearing up some dune about a mile down range you get a feeling of the awesome power behind what the army does =D

madpuppy6032d ago

Because when I think of the most realistic gunfire sound in a movie I think of that alley scene from Collateral. I was watching that movie in my theater room with 7.1 channel surround and you could feel it in your chest when Tom Cruise Fired his weapon.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing19d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9220d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit20d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing19d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9219d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
