N4G Community Sound Off!

Hello one and all, some of you may know me as one of the corrupt and/or biased moderators who help manage N4G. (THAT IS A JOKE PEOPLE)

But I wanted to hear your thoughts on a project I am working on. As apart of this staff I see the.... questionable editorial content that makes its way onto N4G and I see the appetite that exist for such content.

My pet project is a game website (shock I know) that focuses on quality editorial content, some of the first pieces that I've already written include looking at
The Digital download age vs the changing internet world
(bandwidth caps and all)
How the gaming market has transformed in Japan
Microsoft's first party strategy
Designing games for profit instead of fun

However I have some loftier goals and projects for the site, every bi-week I hope to have a guest writer who writes about some aspect of gaming that is important to them, this will include freelance writers, industry personnel, just to name a few.

I also want to try something different with reviews, since the site will consist of pretty much just me writing doing reviews for everything would be down right impossible so I want to allow visitors of the site who have played a game that I cannot review and would usually write a review on N4G the chance to have it become our sites official review.

Of course I would edit it for grammer/spelling and structure but anyone could participate.

So there it is, again I'd love to hear if this is something you guys would like to see or if this kind of content isn't appealing.

I'm really not sure where you're going with this idea. Are we talking all original content? Or a N4G-ish type structure? Articles, reviews, "guest writers"....what's the focus here?

More power to you if you want to create a website, I guess. But none of the titles of the editorial ideas ("The Digital download age vs....[etc]") really sound all that interesting. I'd rather read about upcoming games and such....I know I'm not everyone, but you are asking a game-related website.

Not interested, keep the flame-bait.

Holy Orange.

I think the focus is on a more "Gaming culture" website. At least thats how it sounds. I think "Extra Credits" or insomnia.ac . This is not my website but I'm always down for something like that. I have written some blogs on here I wish could get published on a more... open site. I have an idea to write a blog about the underground fight game scene and culture. Talk about competition. The draw. The ideas of balancing fighting games. Competitions... Etc and simply discuss high level play and why it may or may not appeal to people and what draws you away from the games or towards the games...

I mean more of a Mature site that focuses on "Gamers" and not "Games" and mature intellectual conversations about more then "Does LA Noire look better on 360 or PS3" or "New screens for Last guardian" I think Discussing how to build your own "mame" cabinet and my adventure in trying or retro gaming and it's roots in modern games..... Aesthetics in games and how they draw you in...

That would be my type of site. granted if it's about getting "Hits" then it would never be successful I think. Maybe it could be if actual industry people saw it. Something like Gamasutra or the like... I just don't have the time to build my own site...

Personally, I'd enjoy reading those articles, but only if they were well researched and well written.

I like the idea of an editorial aspect to it all, but you may need a strong user base. More to that, frequent updates are necessary to keep the interest, and thoughtful editorials are difficult to turn out rapidly.

As for reviews, devise a standardised system. Don't bother hiring in people whose opinions and scoring systems (if you want any, but I would advise having something) are inconsistent and seemingly arbitrary. This is why many sites come under fire for having seemingly conflicted opinions about games (like IGN), eg. they bash one game for not advancing the genre while praising an other obviously formulaic one.

This sounds like a cool idea.

awiseman5472d ago

Great Idea, just do good research and don't let it become a fanboy watering hole like n4g :P

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing13d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit13d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing13d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
