The best demo I have ever played

"Originally we were thinking of making a game that would make you pee your pants, but at this point we've changed our minds, and now we're aiming for a game that will make you shit your pants".
-Kojima

Horror seemed to have been a forgotten genre. Resident Evil veered off the left, Dead Space started in the right direction but ultimately caved in to a more action game, Alan Wake was disappointing, and The Last of Us was more of a suspenseful adventure game. Condemned and Blood Siren however were pretty good. But I can't recall any console game that really left me "horrified" the way previous generations have. The great news is that this generation seems to be a little more focused on Horror. Outlast (although have not dabbled in it enough) looked great, This October's The Evil Within looks like a promising game along with Alien:Isolation, and during this years Gamescom you saw Until Dawn and a mysterious title dubbed P.T..

A playable demo for the up coming Silent Hill(s) (formally known as P.T.) is one memorable demo that has left quite the impression on me. Some games can take hours to set up an effective atmosphere but the P.T. demo did it in a matter of seconds. Walking down a tight dimly lit hallway, the eerie track playing in the back, and the unsettling feelings of the unknown brought be way back to my childhood. I haven't felt this tension playing a game since the days of the Resident Evil games on the PS1, I actually felt fear. The days of being too scared to play at night, or abruptly ending your session to compose yourself seemed like a distant memory. Kojima stated that it's possible because Developers don't want to lose your interest if the game is too scary, but that's what makes the Horror genre special. It breeds different emotions, and uncomfortable ones at that. If you're too frightened to play, maybe the genre isn't for you.

The Demo takes you on what seems to be an endless loop of the same room over and over again, but things are different. The bathroom door is open this time, a tall shadowy figure is standing in the hallway, a crying premature fetus looking thing crying in the sink, the bangs on the door, that haunting radio dialog. The teaser sucks you in, devours your attention, it builds up, and builds up, then BOOM, you are kissing distance away from this "thing". It sounds like its snapping your neck thus leaving you motionless on the ground, dead? You then wake up in the same room you started in, and go through the process of the endless loop again with nothing more than a flashlight. It I were a Pokemon the horror would be super effective. I feel like a kid again, too afraid to go on, but as I write this, it brings a smile to my face.

With Kojima and del Torro behind Silent Hills you can assure yourself that good things are in the future and I am excited to see what else is in store. I mean the Gamescom trailer and the demo revealing the true title was brilliant. In such a short amount of time this demo hit every horrifying note and has left me hungry for more. Well. Freakin'. Done.

Yea this game is going to be all kinds of greatness. It's honestly disturbing, it doesn't pretend to be.

Not so full of jump scares like most of todays horror games/movies, but actual disturbing atmosphere and creepy sounds all over the place. It actually requires you to think quite a bit, not just shoot some creepy monsters.

And on a funny note, Ground Zeroes may be one of the best demos I've ever played lmfao. I really loved that game but 30 dollars was outrageous.

That demo scared the crap out me :0

Godmars2904303d ago

Kind of odd hearing this post Ground Zeroes: the most expensive if argumentatively good demo. Put out by both the same company and lead dev no less.

Battlefield 4 is a pretty good demo. Has an entire SP campaign with it. The only problem is that the Demo cost $59.99. But I heard you get the whole game this September.

But, Destiny is out in September so that's a tough sell.

This. I was waiting so long for a game that's genuinely scary, like those "horror" games from childhood, but also good in the story department. That's why Hideo Kojima is a perfect choice, and it shows in P.T..

I totally agree. Very few games or movies these days scare me the same way games like RE1-2 or SH1-2 did in my younger days. But P.T. totally brought back this feeling, I actually had to stop at some point because this building up tension and eerie atmosphere was too much :D.

One of my favorite parts in P.T. was, when the guy talks in radio and suddenly says "look behind you...I said look behind you!". Of course I had to look, after kept hearing some scary sounds behind me xD. Stuff like that made me jump, I was like wtf is the guy saying suddenly omg, is there really something behind me?

It just feels like, this upcoming Silent Hill might be the best thing that happens in horror games in a very very long time, if it's anything like PT. Kojima and Del Toro together will make "real horror", which I haven't seen much in a while.

If you listen to the radio right at the beginning, the whole picture starts to become clear.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing27d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit27d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing27d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
