So why the hell do YOU play games?

Hey all.

About 30 mins ago I just completed "Shadow Of The Colossus".

A definate piece of art (Despite what some moron microsoft employee says)

The game had its downfalls but on the most part, it's a pure emotional piece of beautiful art and I recommened it to any video gamer.

Games like these are exactly why I stick to my playstation brand. Innovation, art, beautiful imaginative storytellling at its finest. Its why I play games.

For me, storyline is the most important aspect in a game. killing people is all well and good, But for me, I need to know WHY I am doing what I am doing. After i know that, I have to want to achieve what im trying to achieve. Nowdays, to many games just aren't delivering in this aspect because they are too busy measuring eachothers diks and creating the best graphics or online play.

Halo 3 is a prime example. A game that could have had the most Epic storyline to end the series but instead turned out to be useless. People soon forgot the single player and just went online.

When I was playing Shadow of the Colossus, I realised that not only was this game different from the rest, but it seemed as if the creators made a game how THEY wanted to make it, without any concern on what critics or the publishers would think. The idea that there are only 16 foes to destroy in the entire game is mind boggling when your told about it, but it works. They owned every decision they made to the end and they created it (it would seem) without any consideration in getting the widest possible sales.

They wanted to tell a story.
Stories are what stay with people. Not gameplay or graphics. They will always improve, but nothing can make a story better, unless it's in the heart of the developers. To tell a great story.

Every few years I play a title that has a certain impact on my life. Games such as Zelda Ocarina of Time and The MGS saga will always stay with me until im 80 years old.

For me most games come and go, but there is always those few that stick with you for a life time.

This is why I play games.

I'd love to know why you play games...

ps. I do play other games just for fun(mainly co-op) and online.  I would never JUST play online. It's not why I truely am a gamer.

Storytelling is one of the main reasons why I play games as well. Though I tend to enjoy the storytelling in western games more.

For me Planescape Torment was the pinnacle of storytelling in video games and the game I am looking forward the most this year is "Too Human" mostly due to it developers history of developing a rich detailed storyline. I am also looking forward to seeing how the Mass Effect storyline continues over the next 2 games.

Thats cool man! I hope you get much enjoyment out of them.

I think i enjoy Eastern games more. Just because in my experience, the storylines are huge, confusing and overwhelming. open to interpretation. I guess in a mainstream industry sense, they aren't so good for your average joe. But being able to put the pieces together myself just enrich the experience ten fold.

In the end it all comes down to preference and enjoyment

I play games mostly because they're interactive stories. Even for games that don't have real stories, like Sins of a Solar Empire, I'll make up little stories in my head.

Though I'm not opposed to a good online FPS every now and then, either.

LastDance6645d ago

yeah i use to do that all the time with games.

Especialy NFS high stakes. I use to do free run and make it night with rain and drive around making up stories in my head.

Good times hehe.

It is very well spoken and I agree full-heartedly.

Entertainment. A dramatic storyline isn't fun, but it's definitely entertaining. That's why I love gaming

If you love story telling and art direction you want to ocheck out BioShock. By far the most amazing story telling and best design ive seen in a gmae for ages. Its available for PC and xbox 360 so im not sure your line about "that's why i stick to the playstation brand" holds any weight with me.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit15d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing15d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9215d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
