Back to the Origins: Rayman

When you hear 'Rayman' you may think about his never-ending escapades with rabbits, who are equally as deformed as our titular character; Rayman. If you thought that, then you don't even know Rayman. He may not be as recognizable as Sonic or Mario, but Rayman certainly has become somewhat of an icon in the gaming world.

Now me and Rayman go way back. I'm talking about how he used to teach me such basic things like Mathematics and English on the sheer prowess of Windows 3.1! And, fortunately for me, there was even more that Rayman could help me learn! Branching out to explain the French language through his 'educational adventures'. If you were to get an answer wrong you were punished by watching Rayman die and flinching in shock because it happens so fast! Though my sarcasm may not be obvious to some, the origins of Rayman do not rest in the hands of 'Maths & English with Rayman!'. So don't worry, you wont have to solve those quadratic equations to beat the next boss.

While on the outside, Rayman appears to be a failing temporary teacher, fundamentally, on the inside, Rayman actually proved to be a pretty successful 90's platformer too! In his debut, the 2D classic, 'Rayman' managed to give me fond memories and nostalgia for the Playstation One title I once owned. In 2D, I could understand Rayman, his world was flat and in that existence his impossible body shape became possible. Overall, the game looked pretty good and hasn't aged as much as those nasty 3D games at all. Since then, Rayman has branched into extra dimensions and had multiple spin-off's. But nothing has come close to the classic gameplay of the original... not until the announcement of Rayman: Origins, of course.

Now granted, this is old news, and this game appears to be a long time coming. However, with Gamescom 2011 just around the corner, there might well be an announcement and something well looking forward to. In contrast to the way Rayman has evolved with Rayman 2 & 3, a step back to the original is most welcome. With inclusion of multiplayer modes and UbiArt Framework technology, this episodic title could return Rayman to it's former glory!

It seems that Rayman belongs in 2D, as do many other platformers. And with the artistic direction that Ubisoft has taken, Rayman: Origins may well be a great homage to the original Rayman. Hopefully, this title will be hitting the online marketplaces soon!

how could i forget him,he was one of my memorable experiences with games i remember playing back.He has dissappered since then with all those "Raving Rabbids" mini games that don't do the name rayman any justice.Ubisoft needs to get it's act together.

I'm eagerly waiting for Rayman Origins too!

IDK, I love a couple of his first 3D games myself-not that he wasn't ace when he began in 2D(IO'm sure he waas) it's just that my memories of the little armless duude with gloves and disconnected feet were the first two 3D platformers and apart from bad camera issues I can't recall there being anything badly ugly about the games at all-they kept simple geometry and classic gameplay to keep you hooked and added detail with their hand drawn texture art and touches like that. To me the early 3D games are also classics even if I do join you in being excited for (my first)chances to play his games as they were first imagined.

I can imagine a 2D Rayman being a pretty hard game too-being really honest as the 3D ones could be buggers if memory serves me right.

Yeah the 2D Rayman games were hard to say the least, especially towards the end. While the 3D Rayman titles weren't bad, they just didn't feel like the same game to me. Perhaps my personal reasons for disliking the 3D sequels fell down to a strong nostalgia for the 2D originals. Also, while the 3D games were not particularly ugly in any respect, they, to me, look a lot more aged in contrast to the 2D style artwork they used in the original.

I find it interesting how the game has found itself being returned to 2D and look forward to the innovations that there will be in that genre.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit51d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing51d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9251d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
