Project Orbis aka Playstation 4

Project Orbis is the supposed codename for the Playstation 4 and it features an anti pre-owned system according to new reports. Sony seems to like Latin words and if Orbis works with vita Sony could form the circle of life where Orbis means circle and vita meaning life. Sony doesn't seem to be the only console holder looking at anti preowned systems Microsoft is also rumoured to be planning to combat pre-owned with an anti-used game system of its own for the next Xbox, codenamed Durango.

New reports don't only reveal a codename they revel plans for the console to launch in time for Christmas 2013 yet didn't Sony's boss Kaz Hirai went on the record to say the Japanese company would not announce a new home console at E3. So if the PS4 was to launch before Christmas 2013 Sony have to unveil and release the system in the same year which would limit marketing and any sort massive ad campaign. The report also reveals some information about the systems potential specification with developers rumored to be working towards an AMD x64 CPU and an AMD Southern Islands GPU, which is the name given to AMD's 2012 high-end PC cards. The system will apparently be capable of running games at a resolution up to 4096x2160 while being able to play 3D games at 1080p.

Orbis Looks to be a worthy successor to the PS3 although the report also suggests the PS4 won't play PS3 games it's quite worrying to hear Sony doesn't have plans to offer backward compatibility. I know Sony removed this functionality from PS3 but can they really afford to do it again especially since it would leave the PS4 to start completely from scratch where gamers can only play brand new titles.

All of this may only be a rumor for now though as Sony are yet to make any comment but given the depth of some of these details some of it could very easily be true. The PS4 is obviously coming at some point and information just keeps trickling out providing us with subtle indications towards Sony's next console. Last year it was believed that a first party Sony studio had ceased PS3 development to move onto the PS4. Despite any official announcement from Sony it was only last month that Forbes claimed that work on a collaboration between Sony and AMD was underway which supports the reported spec of the PS4.

All this is great an I can't wait to finally see the PS4 but for now I still think that the PS3 has plenty of life left and there is some truly amazing tiles to look forward to from both 1st and 3rd parties. 2012 will bring Starhawk, Max Payne 3, Bioshock:infinite, Assassins creed 3 and resident evil 6 to PS3 which is a clear testament that we're not at the end of this generation and with Naughty Dog working on the last of us and Rockstar yet to release GTA V there no real rush. Quantic Dreams recently showed of a new tech demo showcasing what they are currently working on which was unbelievably touching how they capture emotion and this is on current systems so just imagine what the future could hold.

Sony has had patents on anti-used game tech for a long time and never implemented them. They know it'd be detrimental to do such a thing so I HIGHLY doubt that they'll put that kind of tech into the PS4. I mean, it's not out of the realm of possibility, but doing so would mean a lot of sales being flushed down the toilet. A lot of people buy used because gaming is too expensive to always buy new and some people don't have the patience to wait the months until the price hopefully goes down. And with these console online marketplaces, the prices of digital versions never go down. The used market is not evil. It is a crucial aspect of the industry and has been for a long time.

The used game market has played a vital role for all consoles yet people who play used don't exactly support the industry which could hinder future developments. And a lot of people may buy used because its cheaper but games are reasonably priced when you think back to the Psone or SNES where you could pay £60 to £80 for a game and now you get much more value for money.
My biggest concern is the lack of backward compatibility with PS3 games I know they removed Psone and PS2 compatibility after launch but to think once my PS3 died I wouldn't be able to play any of my PS3 games is worrying.

I like the sound of the specs but I have to agree on the used games department. I buy my games new mostly but there are exceptions where very rare games are only available pre-owned.

I don't think Sony would do it. If it happened PS4 would become the grass. And the antelope eat the grass. And so we are all connected.... in the great orbis of vita.

The prorated games system is a good move to me because I buy new yes it can limit the amount of games I can afford but I don't mind. I just hope the report is wrong about backwards compatibility the PS3 has so many great game and to think I won't be able to play them on Sony's new system is worrying.

Agreed. I'm having issues with not being able to play my PS3 games on Orbis. Like alot of people, I still play old games from time to time.

Main_Street_Saint5155d ago

I know I still crack open the classics from time to time. Never forget the old school!

Main_Street_Saint5155d ago

I'm not feeling the no backwards compatibility rumor. There are a few games on the PS3 I would love to own and play on the new system (I don't own a PS3). So limiting the software options might hurt a bit.

Also I really hope that the used games thing isn't for real; I don't buy used games that often but I don't think its right to limit none the less.

The BC compatibility would be hard to implement because of the architecture of both the CPU and GPU if they would go to the AMD route (Especially the CPU). This would only happen if they put the PS3 hardware on the Orbis. That would add cost. Well, the vita has a PSP emulator in it and has PS1 support coming so there is still hope.

True, Sony has been known to make things happen so I have no doubt that they might do something in the not too far off future.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing12d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9212d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit12d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing12d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9211d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
