Gamer's View/Developer's View : IN GAME ADVERTISING

In Game Advertising - a potent idea for publishers but is it a good deal for Gamers? One side gets a larger revenue stream and the other side still pays the same for the game. The question is - do gamers get more game because of this or do we just get advertising that gamers really care less about and in fact would rather not see.

In latest polls 82% of gamers said they don't mind in game advertising which in the mind of developers and publishers is the same as saying that 82% of people approve of in game advertising.  Extra revenue streams are also welcome in the game business due to tight budgets so giving ourselves license like this is a means of gaining return on investment.

OTOH I think this is a wrong equation we are making as developers - just because something doesn't make you hate it does not mean you like it. The idea of a survey like this is to judge what may or may not work in sales and if you word the survey one way you get a different result then if you word it another way.
I would bet that if the question was not:
"Do you mind in game advertising ?"
but
"Would you prefer to play a game without in game advertising?"
the results would be much different.

Since the idea that you don't mind in game advertising is the question that is asked the assumption made by those who publish games is - that if they don't mind they of course will buy it (see BF2142 or Planetside). My feelings about how to properly implement In Game Advertising since it is coming in order of Importance are given in the next section. (and I hope you all agree) I personally don't like in game advertising at all but if we must (and my employer assures me we must) then something like the below should be implemented to protect the gaming consumer.

Gamer's In Game Advertising Manifesto

  1. The buyer of the game must be able to turn off the ads (but the developer can default the ads on and put the off switch in a submenu)
  2. The game must not collect demographic data about the user and send it back.
  3. The ads must be in genre(no modern products advertised in God of War/Conan, No Polly Pocket ads in shooters etc)
  4. They must be unobtrusive ( they should not interrupt game play or slow down getting into gameplay)

Does in game advertising give more game? no not as of yet - if you don't demand more then you won't get more for the revenue stream generated by you.

Not trying to be rude, but I think Layden has absolutely nothing to do with Sony for almost a decade at this point.

I don't even know why people doubt its gonna support discs too. Of course it will. Once Sony realized they could sell it as an add on, the whole conversation is moot at this point. Because Money. I doubt they will ever stop supporting disc.

Neonridr5h ago

no, because Sony wants to sell you a $100 addon so you can play your games.

fr0sty3h ago

And their competition has no such add-on for their digital consoles, meaning if you got the cheap one for christmas, there's no hope of upgrading it to be able to play your old games. I'll gladly take the $100 add-on approach to that.

MayorPauline5h ago

If this gen is any indication there will totally be a digital only PS5 model. Let's not kid ourselves here. There's going to be 2 SKU's again.

fr0sty3h ago

I think what he's saying is that there will still be options to upgrade the digital only model to include a disc drive, much like the current PS5 slim.

Eonjay2h ago

Yes of course. That makes perfect sense given the evidence from this gen.

Pyrofire952h ago

No I'm fairly certain they will do what they do now, 1 sku with an expansion slot for a drive. It simplifies production and gives people the option to get a drive later if they want.

andy853h ago

Youd have to be pretty braindead to think it would be

I would be fine with a BD drive add-on they started with the slim if it means more power for a more affordable price. better yet, if they allow it to use the PS5 BD add-on by default. it's not like the games run from the disc anyway, and it's totally doable. would be a huge win-win situation for both Sony and gamers
