You know, I've not been at all shy to tell everyone how much of a Keith Olbermann fanboy I am ever since I found out he had become the voice for the "other side" (something that at that point was scarce). And many people will have their own opinions about him.
But I think there is one thing that he had said earlier this year that I think applies to now in the game industry, and it's definitely a non-political quote now (he was referring to the Democratic primary at the time he said it). It's being played as part of the MSNBC presidential race coverage promo they've been running, and it made me thing about alot of things in this industry. The quote:
If someone tells you they know what's going to happen next, they don't!
Perfect when talking about this generation of the console war.
Regardless of your preference, assuming you have any, in this generation, no one can deny that this has been the most unpredictable console war that our current lifetimes have ever seen.
Who can seriously say they KNEW that Nintendo's Wii, with it's inferior specs compared to the 360 and the PS3, would just keep clobbering them in the month to month sales?
Who can SERIOUSLY say they KNEW the FF13 to 360 announcement was coming before it did, or that Metal Gear Solid 4 would be so optimized for the PS3 that a 360 port is being responded to as being "impossible"?
Who can seriously say they knew that the PS3, with all the negative press it got and the mistakes Sony made during the beginning of the PS3's life, that they would find their feet and just take off and make the console war a war again and turn critics into believers?
Who can seriously say they knew that when Gabe Newell said the PS3 would be a waste of everyones time a little less than a year ago, that he would be reported as singing a tune that implies that nine month old quote doesn't exist? On that note, who would've predicted that a Left 4 Dead port to the PS3 was even going to be considered and possibly be developed in house, and who will be able to predict how the reaction to THAT news will be?
Who can seriously say that they KNEW roles of Sony and MS as far as what genre was domanent on their systems would be (for now) switched? Who can safely say it's going to STAY that way?
Who can safely say they knew that casual gamers would play a huge role in how the monthly sales played out?
Who can safely say that with all the success the 360 had during it's lifespan, a few years after, we're suddenly discussing rumors of a new system because something isn't quite what it should be right now for the system? Who seriously thought that it would be Microsoft, with all THAT success, would now be the one that has to do a bit of catching up?
Who seriously thought that the then inferior PSN from Sony would suddenly be close to being called superior to XBox Live by some media outlets?
Now, how many times has an analyst said that such and such was going to happen, only to have the exact opposite happen? Regardless of what they had said and what system was predicted to be on top, something no one had ever expected happens.
Basically put, all the analysts are doing is being poor traffic cops, and they should stop predicting, because everytime we think there will be nothing else that will surprise us in this Wii vs. 360 vs. PS3 triple threat match, we get proven wrong AGAIN!
So, regardless of which system you're a fanboy of, or if you're a fanboy of console wars in general, be ready for what is to be a fun ride. Don't predict anything will happen. You'll be wrong, trust me.

Microsoft announced its financial results for Q3 of fiscal year 2026, including an update on its gaming Xbox business and more.
Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.
To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The charity event will be streamed live from Gamescom in August.

Thanks to the slip-up of an artist working on the title, we now have more evidence that a new Injustice game is in the works.
