On the Subject of RPG Remakes

You know, a whole lot of furor has surrounded Square Enix and the possibility of a Final Fantasy VII remake for the PS3.  However, I think there is another good RPG title that is deserving of a remake on the PS3.  It would be a lot easier for Sony to pull this one off as it is a first-party title actually.  It appeared on the original Playstation was released in Japan in 1999, in North America in 2000 and Europe in 2001 and it spanned four discs.  Can you think of the game I'm talking about?  Well the title I'm referring to is "The Legend of Dragoon".

Now I wasn't that tied up in the gaming world when this game originally came out so I don't know what kind of impact it made on the gaming community.  What I do know however is that my friends and I spent countless hours playing the game in our youths.  The game itself received mixed reviews if you look it up in Metacritic.  Anyways I felt the game was a good one, money well spent and time well spent as well.

I feel the story was strong, with unexpected twists which kept you guessing at the answers and kept you wanting to find out more.  Another words, it got you into the plot and kept your attention.  The characters were interesting and unique and before long you felt for them, wanted them to succeed and you had a connection to them.  Its graphics weren't the greatest, but for its time it was almost comparable to Final Fantasy VII which had come out about 2 years before.  This is probably where the game could get its biggest improvement.  The musical score was pretty good, perhaps, again, not as good as Final Fantasy's, but then again whose is.  I do have to mention that the localization was a little lacking as they had the characters saying some pretty stupid and cheesy things which is another part of the game that could be easily improved.

Perhaps the strongest thing about the game was its gameplay.  This was no traditional press a button and watch your character attack RPG.  No this was different, it had you stay active with what I'll call, for the lack of the actual name, the Additions battle system.  When you went on the attack you had to press certain buttons at the right time to continue the attack, do more damage and gain more points for leveling up the attack itself, unlocking the next attack, as well as for other things.  I thought the system was fun, intuitive and it kept me interested in the game since I myself had to get better at the game and it wasn't just about getting the character's level up.

Well, anyway that's just my rant about why it would be a good candidate for remake treatment.  It would be pretty easy for Sony Corp. to remake the title and I think that with the right direction and touch ups, could be a decent RPG for the PS3.  And as of this moment the PS3 is definitely low on RPGs, which was a big reason I bought, so come on Sony, get your asses gear and start working on it =).

I REMEMBER THIS GAME!!!! It was f#$%in' badass!

*digs around storage room for about half an hour

*finds game*

*blows off dust*

Yeah, I would love a remake to this one. It was so underappreciated I could cry. It was probably so overlooked due to another RPG by a certain game developer (If you don't know what game I'm talking about, then you're not a gamer)

But I would rather have a full-blown sequel rather than just a simple remake. Now I want Legend of Dragoon 2!
LoD2!!
LoD2!!
LoD2!!
LoD2!!
LoD2!!
LoD2!!

Huh? OH!! Right! I approve it! :)

ionace6479d ago

Lol, I'm glad that I wasn't the only one who enjoyed it. And yeah, a sequel wouldn't be so bad either.

pwnsause6479d ago (Edited 6479d ago )

LOL i have it!

if LoD2 is made, they should let Level 5 handle the Development.

TheDeadMetalhead6478d ago (Edited 6478d ago )

...I'm a JRPG whore. I'm serious. You name it I've played it. Final Fantasy, Disgaea, The World Ends With You, Dragon Warrior, the works. I've even imported a few just because I didn't feel like waiting another year for it to come to the states. XD And yeah, this was a good one!

But you know what sucked? When I do the Dragoon Addition, I can never get to 5. I always screw up at 4! >_< And I used to be able to do it perfectly every time ;__;

You're right. This game's Storyline ruled! Especially at the end of Disc 3 when Dart finds out who the Black Monster really is...

It's too bad about the 1996-ish Graphics, though. But I guess it was a fairly low-budget game. But it was 1 of only 3 games that had 4 discs.

Everybody needs to play this game! =D

Did you think the graphics were bad for the time? I thought they were pretty good.. Maybe I'm just looking at it with rose-colored glasses because I remember it so fondly.. but it makes FFVII look even more dated in comparison. I don't even think it looks horrendous today, considering its age. Also, anyone that loves RPGs and hasn't played this... PLAY IT! Old graphics and all! ^^

TheDeadMetalhead6478d ago

It does look a lot better than FF7. But compared to FF8 (Which was released a year before LoD) looks much better imo. Here's a comparison

LoD : http://image.com.com/gamesp...

FF8 : http://www.emuparadise.org/...

Notice how the background in FF8's less pixelated and how the Characters in FF8 look much less jagged than LoD. Maybe I went a little too far in saying that it looked like 1996. More like 1998. :)

Ozzyb6478d ago

I agree FF8 does look way better. It's hard to compete with Square in the graphics department. I did enjoy LoD more than FF8 though. I think one of my favorite things about the game was the attacking system, how you had to press to chain combos. With that, you were always involved in the battles beyond telling your characters who to attack. Also, the characters were very different from one another and all very fun to play. AND... the ending.. was spectacular!

TheDeadMetalhead6477d ago

What it was lacking in teh Graphics Department it more than made up for in the Gameplay Department. The Battles were much more complex than in the Final Fantasys. Although I honestly don't see why they needed 4 discs for it. It wasn't all that long for an RPG, to be honest. Maybe 30-40 hours at the most. Maybe it's longer than I remember it, I don't know. :/

i still play this game every year it is my favorite game its my first rpg that i was introduce to. and by god i love this game so much i loved the sound tracks were you fight kongol and lylod i forgot how to spell it right and i found the sound tracks on a website somewhere and i got 50 songs on my ps3 and a couple of my favorites i added on to my psp. i did a petition on facebook for this.

i planed to become a video game developer someday and hoped to either try to get this dream to happen a remake of this game would be cool or a sequel. and im thinking of a prequal to this game like they did with ff7 crisis core for psp.

this game makes me talk very long about it

nieto6479d ago

Lost_My_600_Dollar6479d ago

Wonderful choice I really liked this game more than any RPG

Lunar Silver star story was also a masterpiece

Reibooi6479d ago

I remember playing this game and feeling like I had played it before and then it hit me. It was trying way to hard to be final fantasy. Even down to the menu screens being almost exactly the same. I read a article soon after I played the game that explained how almost everything in the game could be linked with Final Fantasy and It was really sad. I have never really understood why some people loved this game so much. Any closer to Final Fantasy and there would have been law suits.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing17d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9217d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit17d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing17d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9217d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
