Industry Issues – Crytek and Kim Kardashian

As Crytek UK suffers an increasing number of walkouts, Kim Kardashian looks to make an incredible amount of money off of her mobile game – Kim Kardashian: Hollywood.

Crytek in Nottingham has faced a number of problems in recent months, most importantly its staff not being paid. After Hasit Zala, the director of Homefront: The Revolution recently walked out, it seems like these problems are not going to be fixed anytime soon. The developer of Far Cry, the CryEngine, and the Crysis franchise seems to be in a whole heap of trouble, and extremely talented people responsible for these games are being forced to leave the company. Many have speculated that poor sales of Ryse: Son of Rome is to blame, but there must have been a longstanding internal problem for these issues to still be dragging on. Crytek is going through a critically important stage in the company’s history, and i only hope that everyone who is affected lands on their feet.

Kim Kardashian on the other hand, is set to make an extremely large sum of money for her recent venture into video games. If you did not know who Kim Kardashian is (and who would blame you?), she is a ‘celebrity’ who shot to stardom for making a sex tape with her old boyfriend ‘Ray-J’. After delving into TV, fashion, modelling and Kanye West’s bank account, Mrs Kardashian-North-West now has her own game, which has shot to #2 in the App Store free games section. The F2P game developed by Glu Mobile, has options for in-game purchases, and is making a stack of money. Some more outlandish sites such as TMZ have reported $200m this year ($85m for Kardashian), whereas The Guardian report a lot less. Either way, she will definitely be pocketing millions for lending her name and rights to a mobile game.

It is a sorry state of affairs when a company responsible for some wonderful franchises is imploding, with many talented people quitting and searching elsewhere for work which may or may not exist. Then we have someone such as Kim Kardashian providing voice narration for a game that the general public eat up. With another famous socialite recently becoming a ‘DJ’, fingers crossed for ‘DJ Hero 3: Paris Hilton Edition’ to save the gaming industry from this nightmare.

Fitting that you put these two together. Since both are guilty of being vapid.

While the Kardashian thing is a case of a celebrity who's "famous" for being a celebrity and cashing in on it, with the $200 million project just that, a PR forecast/rumor likely started by her people and/or the game makers, Crytek is just getting what they deserve.

Yeah Crytek brought this on themselves by going against everything their fans wanted and making utterly terrible decisions.

One just seems distinctly more hollow than the other.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit63d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9262d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
