Buying Games You will Never Play

As I'm sitting here at the computer I glance over my shoulder and downward. At the base of my feet on the floor to my right are two small shelves under my television which is mounted on the wall beside me. The shelf contains various movies and television series, but taking up the bulk of the space are 42 Playstation 3 games. I don't know how I amassed so many, especially since I only really play between three and four regularly.

When I was a kid and I depended on my parents to provide me with my gaming pleasures, things were a little different. Not only did I have fewer games, but I also played each of them to death. I'm sure many of you are familiar with this situation; you would get a game for your Birthday, Christmas, and maybe after getting a few A's on your report card. So there was a long wait until the next game that you would be able to play unless you went to your friends house who had a Genesis while you had a SNES. Your latest game would get the Shat played out of it, and the shat certainly spewed. Not only that but you would have to be pickier about which games you choose to buy. Back then magazine scores and recommendations were king, and getting one of those Nintendo VHS tapes in the mail advertising the next latest thing went a long way towards swaying your oppinion ...caugh caugh...Donkey Kong Country 'damn tree house'

Now that I am older and have my own source of income it is much easier to buy games. Sometimes I even self medicate, buying a game to make myself feel better after I have had a particularly bad day or a fight with my girlfriend. Out of all the 42 games I have collected all the ones in the picture below have either not been beaten or not even played at all. So why do I and people like myself continue to spend cash on a new game when we have not completely exhausted or gotten bored of the ones we already have? What do you people think? Is it because of the type of consumerist society that we live in, where you always have to have the latest thing or you feel like you are being left out? Maybe some of you buy it like me; just to make yourself feel better? Could it be that we just become keen on building a collection? Maybe the hype machine is just too much these days with advertisement bombarding us from all angles on gaming sites and reviewers giving out scores of 7 and up like it is candy. I for one would like to see a return to the past, where 5 out of ten was and average (good game) while 9 was GOTY and 10 unachievable. I would love to hear the community's' opinion on this why some games hoard games and buy them continuously, even though we know that we probably wont get around to playing it anyway. What do you think?

Same deal here, 60 Ps3 retail games and 21 Psn titles. Maybe 10 I've beaten. Some never touched. But I also have 150 original xbox games that are all in original packaging with instructions that sit boxed up in the top of the garage to be opened by my kids in 60 years when I pass. I never sell games, they all get saved. Maybe worth something some day.

Holy moly....I think I have maybe 10-12 games total (3 are Halo, 2 are Mass Effect, 2 are sports games, two are games I got for free from friends, 2 are PC games)

I guess I just trade games in....while I don't get the value I could; I also get something for them instead of them just sitting around and not being played. I'm also not much of a collector.

I find that I buy games I don't play much at all either but I've stopped trying to do that and take into consideration what else I have to play before I buy a game. Good read

Same here too, I still have a good track record, beating most of the games I get. But man, I always look at my collection and remember when I was younger and I always feel spoiled. I used to 100% most of the games I got, now I do little more than beat them if that.

If you guys have games you're not playing toss some my way, I'll happily play them :)

games i dont play are the really old ps1 games that are worth about a penny so there is no point in sell them.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit58d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9258d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
