How Can The Elder Scrolls Get Away With This, CD-Keys?

***Update*** -The developers have come out and stated what you see below. /But it has not been stated that you will not need a key for your ESOTU Online account/ Which is needed to sign into the game and play online - Until this is cleared up I will remain on the fence.

-But they have stated,
"The physical console version of The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited does not require a one-time game code. As with any other boxed PS4 / Xbox One game only the game disc is needed for verification."

***Valenka*** -has the details in the comments below.

-Original Blog Post-

You may or may not have read this, but it looks as if DRM is back, and back in a big way. Elder Scrolls is about to do something other games wouldn’t dare, they are going to release the game with a mandatory CD-Key requirement, meaning each game needs this key in-order to play the game.

My real question is why in the world is Sony allowing this game to use a CD-Key on PS4. Of course they can’t really stop them it’s their choice on how they want to present their content, but we the consumers have already had this war, and we decided that we don’t want this on our games. Some will say this is a MMO it’s different, no it’s really not, not when it’s an MMO on consoles. Console rules should apply.

Ok, just in-case this is going over your head, The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited on PS4 and Xbox One will both require a CD key, much like the CD keys that come with retail copies of all PC Games / Now they may code it different for you, by saying no, you only need the key for your ESOTU account. This also means the game can not be re-sold. Because the person buying it would need a CD-Key in-order to play it.

So no way you can sell this game. And you will not be able to share it either. This should not be allowed on consoles. We don’t allow that here. That’s a PC thing. Consoles are different. This was mainly to avoid piracy that was happening on PC, we don’t share these problems on consoles.

Just so we're clear, here is what the admin at Elder Scrolls Online said,”

-”Hey there folks,
To clarify, you will need a unique game registration code in order to play the game, and used copies will not be eligible to receive a key if the code has already been redeemed.

It works the same way as the PC version in that the code included in the box is to activate your ESOTU account and the discs are for installation purposes.”

- Wow, where have we heard that before, you guessed it, the failed Microsoft Press Conference.

Remember when everyone was pissed about this B.S and could believe they were going to do this, well it looks like The Elder Scrolls is about to pick up right where they left off.

It seems that once again the consumer is about to be tested. And this test will indeed open the doors for games going forward on consoles. You already know if they get away with this, then other companies like Activision and Ubisoft and EA will be next to start doing the same exact CD-Key required stupidness on all of there games. And claim oh, it’s because we want to keep it fair and safe from hackers and stuff.

Listen I’m not against companies trying to make sure they get their profits for their game, but not when those profit are put in-front of consumers rights to a fair gaming experience. Just because some people / pirates are robbing publishers does not mean everyone is. And when you attack the very people who support you, bad things tend to happen. (Don’t believe me, ask Microsoft about the launch of Xbox One and why that went so unbelievably horribly wrong.)

Biting the hand that feeds you is a stupid mistake game companies keep making time and time again. Well I’m sorry I have to draw a line in the sand. This will not stand, I can not support a game that is changing the rules of gaming on consoles, it is too high a price to pay.

I will not buy The Elder Scrolls at all, not on PS4 or XB1 or PC. I have decided to boycott the game altogether, I recommend you do the same, as I feel the game represents an ugly and inappropriate stand against gamers. They are telling us that we can not have used games on our console, and that we may not share our games with family or friends, they are deciding to break all the rules and the silent agreement that we gamers have made with Sony and Microsoft. Which up to now has been, we will support you because you support gaming and understand that we want to share our games, and we want to be able to sell a game if we so choose to.

This silent agreement between gamers and console makers will not be broken because one game company decides, the rules or understanding of how console gaming works does not apply to them. Who is Bethesda studios to think they can put Microsoft’s original plans in motion and change the rules of game right from under the gamer.

Do we suddenly not have the right to sell a game if we think it sucks. Do we not have the right to give this game to my brother if he wants to play it on his PS4? Am I to follow you into the world of rules designed to hinder my gaming experience just so you can lock down your profits, and treat me your customer as if I’m some kind of pirate waiting to rip the company off the second you turn your back.

Well if that’s your attitude, keep your game, because I can’t support such abuse of power, and while I agree you should indeed make the most from your game, I do also think you shouldn’t take advantage of your customers and you shouldn’t ask them to support you when you represent exactly what we didn’t want to happen to our game experience. We spoke loud and clear at Microsoft Press Conference, we don't’ want DRM in our games, and we don’t want game companies telling us we can’t sell a game if we don’t like the game.

I'm taking a stand here and even though it will be hard because the game was looking really good, I'll pass, "because if you don't stand for something you will fall for anything."

Glad I never had any interest in this game. Zenimax suck.

sounds like they don't want people to play the game for free because it's a mmo style game. they also dropped the monthly subscription for it in march for the pc. that means used copies will be a burden to their servers as they continue to support the game.

what you have is a paid monthly model that didn't work and this is their band-aid solution on consoles. it's not as much as a concern on pc as gamers buy their stuff digitally.

Bethesda has been in touch to state that the disc version of The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited will not require a CD key. It only requires the disc for verification.

“The physical console version of The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited does not require a one-time game code, as with any other boxed PS4 / Xbox One game only the game disc is needed for verification. Any previous statements counter to this were incorrect.”

I was just about to share that: http://forums.elderscrollso...

In the very link the author of this blog shared, the post was updated to include:

"The physical console version of The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited does not require a one-time game code. As with any other boxed PS4 / Xbox One game only the game disc is needed for verification."

However, the original statement was, "It works the same way as the PC version in that the code included in the box is to activate your ESOTU account and the discs are for installation purposes."

So there are two scenarios:

1. The person who was given the green light to take the announcement publicly got the information completely wrong.

or

2. The company reviewed the community backlash and decided to swiftly backpedal.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing11d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9211d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit11d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing11d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9211d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
