3-D is back....Sigh

So a lot of hype has been made recently on this whole "3-D" fad that seems to be taking the nation by storm.
Personally I hate 3-D. I never have been a fan. I think that people are trying to make 3-D the "Stopgap" until the next generation of consoles hit's the shelves, but since these consoles are doing so well and the economy is so bad, I tend to think were a few years away from new consoles from the big three.
So to bide the time someone thought "Hey, let's bring back 3-D!" "It's been years since this fad died out, everything old is new again at some point"

3-D was huge in the 1950's, 1960's and the 1980's and even some beyond that like with Spy Kids 3-D etc...
My big complaint is that it's just a fad, which has been proven time and time again. Sure, they updated it and pay a lot of money to studio's to make 3-D games and movies, (Which is why we get a reboot Spiderman movie instead of a part 4, The Director and crew didn't want to make a 3-D movie especially not knowing the equipment and anything about it, but Spiderman is made by Sony Studio's which is pushing 3-D heavily at the moment to coincide with there new line of 3-D TV's)

I didn't get anything extra out of the 3-D version of Avatar and I really, really, REALLY hate the idea of wearing glasses to play games or watch something.
It seems so primitive to me. Yet they try to pass it off as "New and Exciting" Let's call it what it is a Fad and a stopgap.
Even Nintendo has jumped on this ship with the new DS 3-D that is supposed ot be coming out March of 2011. Though we get a sneak preview this year at E3.

The idea of a Hand held with the power of the Gamecube is interesting, but the 3-D thing does nothing for me, even though it's supposed to be "Glasses free" 3-D.
To me, the next big thing in technology is Microsoft's "Project Natal" I mean it's right out of a futuristic movie.
Voice control your media and tell it when to start and stop and turn up the volume. Change media, Video phone, controller free gaming. That seems more like real "new tech" then this 3-D thing swirling around.

I will never spend $5000 on a 3-D television and I'll never wear stupid looking glasses to enjoy a movie, especially not in my own home.
It is true, everything old is new again at some point, Like Gi-Joe, Transformers, The A-Team, The Beatles, He-Man and the list goes on and on.
3-D in my opinion just need's to go away, I don't need to be anymore involved with my gaming or viewing experiences.

Good day 3-D....not today!

Dude, you think Natal is "New and Exiting"? PS Eye tried the same thing years ago.

And, as long as it's glasses free, 3d is fine. It doesn't hinder you in any way. And in the case of the 3DS, it will allow for puzzles were you have to look around corners etc...

sid4gamerfreak5852d ago

@The 10th Rider: Oh get past your "natal isn't original" or "PS Eye did this before natal". Grow up man, don't be a whining crybaby. Fact is most things like voice commands the PS Eye couldn't do.

OT: I believe 3D isn't a fad, yet shouldn't be hyped liked how it is now. Its either a failure or success. If it works well, it could increase the overall entertainment experience by a great level, thoroughly engaging its viewers. But the prices need to be cut, and I agree with you, the glasses shouldn't be there. But they are making 3D screens without glasses so lets see what happens.

Never dismiss good technology. Remember when hdtvs were dissed? Look where they are now...

I think being able to sit in my living room and voice activate media is new and exciting. Being able to flip through menu's and turning things with hand movements is definitely new. The eye toy was rudimentary at best and it didn't really track movements, much less have voice commands and other media applications. There were never any "Games" that played like a regular game with Eye Toy. Their will be games for Natal, I mean Ghost Recon, Metal Gear, Fable 3 etc... There is a huge difference and all the Sony Fan's saying otherwise need to just let it go.

if using Voice commands is that awesome, why hasn't anyone done it using just a headset?

And your blog post is on 3d, not natal, you still haven't said what's so horrible about 3d. I agree that it isn't awesome, but glasses free 3d isn't something awful.

Do you honestly think that this new 3D has been "brought back" as a "stopgap" to benefit games consoles. So the millions that movie studios and TV manufacturers are investing in this new tech is all to act as a "stopgap" for the console market? I knew I should have stopped reading after your opening sentences but for some reason I just kept going.

I don't think you can compare stereoscopic 3D to old style 3D. The only comparison I can see is that you have to wear glasses for both.
New 3D is not about that one wow factor moment in the movie where the shark bursts through the screen, it's about giving depth to the 2D screen and looking into the image rather than just at it plus it does this in full colour. Granted the glasses are a hindrance at the moment but I'm sure that 3D without glasses will come along soon enough.

How can you, a gamer (all be it a crap one), not see the benefits that stereoscopic 3D can offer to gaming specifically where depth is a huge factor like in shooters and racers for example.

Haha, you posted something similar on my ps3 3d preview. I guess you have a point they should make a ps3d with a bigger processor so it can run 1080p games seamlessly in hd and 3d.

I wont wear glasses to game or watch movies. I also think movies companies are wasting too much money on a clear "fad" I don't want to be "tricked" by some flashy effect on a screen for a movie, I want to be "immersed" by the film itself, the story. Just like this new CGI animation took over and it's all we see now, I still prefer the old style Disney animation. Too many people are trying to push this, if you notice the biggest pusher is "SONY" and they are pushing it for movies and gaming. I know a lot of people who want nothing to do with 3-D and it's retarded glasses.
Personally I will never, EVER wear glasses to play a game and people shouldn't have to.
Also, look at 3-D's history, it's always come and gone. It's a totally different thing then HDTV's. Everyone can enjoy HD television, the average person over the age of 30 isn't going to be wanting to slap some silly glasses on in their own home though. Which is why this 3-D push will fail. People wont want their kids straining their eyes with glasses trying to look at 3-D either. Mark my words, 3-D is a fad again and it will pass with some time.

-"I wont wear glasses to game or watch movies"
-"I know a lot of people who want nothing to do with 3-D and it's retarded glasses."
-"Personally I will never, EVER wear glasses to play a game and people shouldn't have to."

But nobody has to, not everybody can even see 3D.
Every 3D game and 3D Bluray movie that will be released in the future will have a 2D version aswell, so you and the people you know will always have your nice, flat, glasses free 2D version.
I'm pretty sure the latest 3D is merely a stepping stone to glasses free 3D anyway so you and the people you know will be able to enjoy it one day.

I won't be investing in 3D for a while myself, I'll wait and see where the technology goes first, basically I don't want to buy a new TV with glasses then months later a new screen comes out that doesn't require glasses. I've tried panasonics glasses with their 60" screen and didn't like them. They feel a bit front heavy and I can imagine prolonged use causing discomfort especially across the bridge of your nose.

-"Also, look at 3-D's history"

I'll say it again- the only comparison I think that can be made with stereoscopic 3D and old style 3D is that you have to wear glasses, other than that they both offer very different experiences IMO.

-"I also think movies companies are wasting too much money on a clear "fad""
-"Mark my words, 3-D is a fad again and it will pass with some time"

With your amazing foresight I'm surprised you're not running these movie companies, it appears that you think you could teach them a thing or two.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing26d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit26d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing26d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9226d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
