killzone 2's early reviews

Ok so I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with the great scores it's gotten, but I am saying that there's something wrong with how the reviews are done on some sites. I just sifted through basically all the reviews so far and most of them say it like it is and give a well written review about the merits of the game and it garners anywhere between 9 and a 10. Very respectable I say and more so than most of the games that have gotten scores like 10 and high 9s. The problems I have with the reviews boil down to 2 things, number 1 is that all of the reviews so far are early and are not based on the gold version of the game. Guerrilla had stated that they had sent out a review copy of the game but they still hadn't finished work on it, and they only went gold with it fairly recently so most of the glitches and bugs that people found are probably not even in the final retail copy. Which makes it even more amazing how perfected this game is considering all the other high score games lately having almost game-breaking problems with pop-in, frame-rate, bad AI, low-res textures or flickering low-res shadows and so far only a few places have pointed even one of those things happening in very specific place that probably won't even be there when the game comes out. I think it says alot about the reviewers who focus on little niggles in this game and totally forgive serious problems that need to be patched in things like Gears 2 or Fable II (both great games but they do have some serious quality issues right out of the box)

I also have a problem with the way that some of the reviewers (primarily IGN so far) have basically found every little tiny reason to not like some insignificant part of the game and squeeze that in between praise of the game, it's almost like they're trying to purposely instill doubt while begrudgingly giving the game a high score, I just really think that they could have written a much better, more comprehensive review, but then again I almost always think that about their reviews, they're generally badly written, they don't do the job that well and the system they have for scoring is flawed anyway

The thing I find most confusing though is that considering it's an fps there seems to be a hell of a lot of reviewers saying it's too short! Is this just because they want more of this glorious game? because they seem to be completely ignoring the extremely short campaigns of many other fps games which are about 5-8 hours long........I'm pretty sure that there aren't many other fps games that can tout 10 hours as it's average playing time for all skill levels

but why?

Some great points you made there. I think you r right about Ign taking points of for minor things that they overlooked in other games that they have reviewed, cough , cough Gears 2 . but i digress
I think they shouldn't base their reviews until they get a final copy of the game.
But the reviews are good so far so I'm happy

Ya most reviews are good but with extreme nitpicking that other titles dont get judged by. Different standards being applied to kz2 which other past games have not been scrutinized for.

Anyways im anxiously waiting for this title like no other.

Seriously, from the video review (on IGN) you see the weak looking zapper and flamthrower. For a game that has so much graphical muscle, IGN found it wierd to have such low grade visuals.

You see, since IGN didn't give it a perfect score they would have to tell you about some of the problems they had. If they didn't, guys like you would be foaming at the mouth for explanation. When they do (and they always do) tell you the issues, you complain about them telling you! What is wrong with you?!

I don't doubt that they might overlook issues with other games (interesting how you only mention two XBOX games and not PS games) but who cares?! It's only a review!

"It's not the gold version"

Give me a break. It's a month from release so the game that the reviewers have is most likely the finished product (save for some light texture issues or what not). The game is basically done so what you see if the final product, face it. GG are not going to rip open the game's code from now until the release date.

I mean, did THIS really warrant a blog?

Calm down buddy :P
Did I ever sound like I was "foaming at the mouth"? Sounds like you're a bit pent up :0

Sure the napalm from the flamethrower doesn't look amazing and the defib zapper could look better, but my point is that do those things actually deter from the gameplay? No. This is not an "issue", it is a personal little annoyance of some uptight reviewer trying to look for the slightest thing wrong with a game that is more polished than half of the games that come out these days.

I'm pretty sure that in terms of the zapper the beam did get changed for the final version. Yes, it wasn't the final version because there were still bugs to be ironed out and things to change, Guerrilla even sent more than one review copy because they had fixed a few more bugs and then they still worked until late January on it before it went gold.

Yes, I mentioned two xbox games but that's only because their the only recent high-production releases I've played recently with similar problems but in much more noticable, more broken kinda way. GTA IV is a great example of a game that had terrible shadow problems and some serious pop-in/low-res textures here and there but nodoby faulted it for that did they?

All I'm saying is that this is a very good example of how reviews can be written better than the tripe that's being written at most big sites like IGN, and no they're not always bad, and no, they're not the only offenders.

So thank you for commenting and YES this did warrant a blog, I'm sorry but I didn't know that I've offended the mighty god of blog rules! :P

Now screw off

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing24d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit24d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing24d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9224d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
