For me, it's action-adventure. I grew up liking that genre the most.

My favorite genre is definitely survival horror. Especially of the early Resident Evil type. The suspense and progression always gets me. Especially when it progresses almost like a metroidvania. Im a huge fan of horror movies (even the awful B-rated ones), but I still scare fairly easily. Regardless, I’m always willing to try out a good survival horror game, and I can’t wait for Resident Evil 2 RE:make

Platformers for me. They're often very challenging but rewarding and varied gameplay makes for fantastic experiences.

RPGs, Action RPGs in particular. I love the freedom of movement and strategy that comes with the action RPG that can still preserve many of the aspects I adore about the more standard JRPG. I definitely stray more towards the J-ARPG rather than the Western variety, with one of my all time favorite series being Kingdom Hearts.

Shooters. I like the pick up and play anytime ease of them. There's a strong social aspect too. I typically prefer 3rd person but 1st person can be good too

Shmups/stgs.

The time required per session is very low. I can play for 10 minutes and feel satisfied.

However, the skill ceiling is incredibly high. I often practice for months to get a respectable score.

As much as I enjoy various genres, I'll have to go with the more bland answer of FPS. There's something about the demand for situational awareness within a constrained view that works so well for me. And while it's underrepresented today, there's a lot more...wiggle room with what an FPS can be when combining other mechanics (outside RPG stat stuff).

Definitely JRPG. I think I have had the most defining moments of me becoming a gamer because of them, and until last gen, they were about the only place to really get the really good stories in video games.

RPGs, particularly turn-based JRPGs. I believe Legend of Dragoon was the first one I put real time into and I’ve been in love since. Nothing beats strategic combat and going on an epic quest to save the world.

Action rpg, action hack and slash whatever with a sword. I just love a good sword fight with block and attack on difficult level. It takes skills and what not and just more fun then shooters as well as keep you on your toes.. Jrpg would be it back then for the stories. Also racing's games wouldve been one

linear single player action adventure games.. because i feel sometimes too much deviation from the creators well crafted journey just dilutes the experience and urgency.. its not that i dont enjoy rpgs and open world games but sometimes these rpgs just take you out of the immersion just so u could satisfy your own covetousness by grinding or spending extra time on side activities, more often than not that starts feeling like a chore and whenever i get busy and am unable to comeback to such games i just end up moving on and end up not completing the game.. plus for someone who is mostly busy the whole week i know i can get into an SP game and dont need to worry about the countless markers and chores i need to complete and end up putting in countless hours, with SP games i know it would be long enuff that i can finish the whole experience within a week and not feel like i have a baggage of incomplete games in my backlog

RPG. I just enjoy the stories the most and seeing the characters grow.

Rpgs, its like being escaping to another world with interesting characters and plots. Then being whoever you want to be, have a say on the matters around you, interact with the world of the witcher or skyrim. Then there's becoming stronger and stronger with each level getting new abilities until you become an unstopable badass

3rd person action adventure games. The Witcher 3, The Last of Us, Bloodborne, Resident Evil 4, Ninja Theory's games, Tenchu, God of War, DMC, Tomb Raider, Uncharted, Jak and Dax, Ratchet, and so on.

A fairly broad 'genre' but these games often involve elements of traversal, platforming, steath, combat, story, and rpg progression and customisation.

So 3rd person action/adventure it is.

Tough one for me. I enjoy most genres.

But I'll have to go with RPGs. The great ones have a sense of depth that is mostly unique to the genre.

Driving games and modern military shooters

Strategy. It never gets old.

Unlike every other genre, rpgs aren't locked to 1 gameplay mechanics like FPS, Fighters, racers etc
An RPG can be turn based or action or even a shooter. They instead focus on the player and his /her progression. How our time and work actually manifests into something in the actual gameplay. How we evolve from every level to the next

RPGs are truly the ultimate escapism. Where you be the character you want(using custom character or dialog options) look the way you want (equipments) and play how you want (classes, weapons or spells etc)

RPGs and whatever destiny/division/borderlands/a nthem can be considered

Turn Based Tactical Strategy RPG's like Shining Force because I enjoy the strategy involved in planning out moves.

I honestly don't have a clear favourite genre. From the very beginning, I've always enjoyed a very wide variety of games, in all genres, and TBH, I'd probably be bored quite quickly if there would be just one.

I think I'll go with sports games. Because A: It's a lazy answer to give because although it counts as one genre, they're still very varied. SSX for example, counts as a sports game. Skate 3 counts as a sports game. Everybody's Golf counts as a sports game.

And B: because throughout the years, football ('soccer') games have almost always been there for me for a quick pick-me-up. In the old days it was Sensible Soccer, and the very first FIFA (Sega Megadrive), and of course International Superstar Soccer on SNES, on Xbox it was PES 4 & 5, and when PES was completely down in quality for a few years, FIFA was back on top of its game, and in recent years, for me at least, PES has been the best game again.

It's one of those games that demands every second of your attention, so you're never bored while playing it, but at the same time it's also always familiar, you know what you should be doing, what's asked of you, and while you know what you CAN do, pulling it off is never quite as easy as you'd think it is, which makes the times that you DO pull it off, all the more rewarding. Often, the simplest of tap-ins in PES can feel like an achievement, because of what has come before that final touch...

I think the same reason I love PES holds true for the best sports games: In SSX3, you might now all the tricks, all the short cuts, but of course you will still need to execute them with the right timing, land them properly, deal with opponents, etc. They will offer you a comfort zone of knowing what to do and what to expect, while also always slightly nudging you out of it, in order for it to remain challenging and rewarding.

Finally, they're equally enjoyable to play in short bursts (just 1 match. Just 1 race. Just 1 round. Whatever), or for hours on end.

Oh, and then there's the multiplayer.

So yeah, I'll go with sports games. It's not because they're the 'best' or most ambitious games. And if I'd make a top 5 or even top 10 list of my favourite games of all time, chances are it won't actually have a sports game on there, but when done right, it's a genre that will be there forever, offering you instant and everlasting gaming pleasures, be it creating your ultimate B-baller in NBA Street 3, or hitting a birdie on a challenging course in the storm in Everybody's Golf, or blasting in a rising shot with Pogba in PES from 35 meters orso...

FPS's...why becuase I like to shoot people in the face, especially cocky 12 years who think they are it. Never mess with a 43 year old gamer who had been been playing games before your Dad paid your Mum.

Narrative driven melee/shooter action/action rpg games. This includes TPS, FPS and H&S. Some examples are Destiny, Horizon 0 Dawn, Witcher, Uncharted, GOW, Bloodborne, Darksiders, DMC, Hellblade, Wolfenstein, Mass Effect, Gears of War...Halo series but only up to 4. 99% of the games I enjoy are single player. I usually never play MP.

Horror games. Simply because I love the feeling of overcoming a scenario that would otherwise be my demise in real life.

Its not a real genre because i dont have favorite.

I enjoy games that deliver a great story so enjoy it in action, adventure, interactive story telling, rpg and so on.

So in short "story" is my favorite genre. Sorry i couldnt give an answer of a real genre.

Action-rpg. Ever since I played fallout 3 I have been hooked. And I love that more and more games are putting rpg elements in. Horizon zero Dawns sequel should be very interesting.

I have always enjoyed simulation style games. I know, I know, they aren't "mainstream" and are hardly on consoles at all aside from a few racing games, but a good simulation can be a lot of fun if you are the right kind of player. From the traditional flight sim where you can fly around the world in a variety of aircraft to trucking sims where you can, well, you drive a truck. I enjoy games with all kinds of switches and knobs that actually do things. Train sims where you have to understand how a steam locomotive works and what levers and valves do what to get the thing moving. Submarine sims where you have to understand things like sonar, hydrophones, and all the complicated calculations needed to launch a torpedo at a moving target so that they meet up in the end and do what torpedoes do. I really miss submarine sims, R.I.P. Silent Hunter series. You can even do weird things like run a farm or perform surgery and, of course, there are the racing sims where skill and understanding car tuning can mean more than raw engine power. Simulation games aren't for everyone, but they can be hours of entertainment for those of us who want to step into the shoes of someone with a job we will never have in real life.

RPG, because i like how they set up whole world and characters. RPG requires some work and games usually are much more longer then brainless shooters.

RPG's. the sheer amount of content in a good rpg like final fantasy, fallout and skyrim can easily take you over a hundred hours to complete. games like fallout and skyrim give you so many options you can easily play those games 3 times over and have a different experience every time. You definitely feel like you get your money's wort with a good rpg.

I found myself liking games in different genres. But if I have to Choose i would say action/adventure and Jrbg. I loved games such as prince of persia, assassins creed, uncharted, tombraider in action/adventure and games such as ff7, ff8, ff9, parasite eve.

3rd person action games.
I love the attention to detail, the pacing of the games and the character animations.
There's nothing like a good narrative that inspires you to shoot u some bad guys.

Definitely rogue likes. Having each play through completely different with a chance to be incredibly wacky is something I've always needed in my games and have been missing. There is something abort resisting the urge to pick up a bad item that just gets me going.

Mine would have to be racing, and it would have to be games like TDU 1, 2 and Forza the most then it would have to be NFS because you can push the limits of the vehicle unlike you can in real life unless your on a race track and have time to go racing these powerful machines.

When I was younger my first experience was with racing sims was gran turismo on the playstation 1 then it just stuck with me over the years in different forms of racing games. its also a strategy on how to play these sorts of games find the right moment to make your move etc beat the competition and win.

This is really a tough choice as I enjoy a lot of different genres.
I'm going to say mmorpg's since I have very fond memories of games in the genre.
It's something special about different zones having different themes but still belonging to the same world and main story.

I also enjoy having character progression and a lot of different skills in games.

I think I was about 9 years old when my step dad showed me Dark age of camelot, the graphics weren't really special and it looked like the hit detection were off (duh!) but when I got to try it I enjoyed the combat and gameplay.

It was when my stepdad told me "those guys right there, no them, right by the house... Those guys are other players" that the game blew my mind.

I've never really experienced that sense of awe with any other game, that's why I'm making it my nr 1 genre.

Its always been rpg/mmorpgs. I always feel like I get the most bang for my buck. The ability to make your own character or to embody a character and just escape to a different reality were I don't have to worry about anything else and just live a different life with someone else flaws instead of my own. Wondering why the universe I'm in has developed this way and trying to figure it out like a puzzle in my head.

Yep it has to be action RPGs for me. Always loved Assassin's Creed, for example, and I'm also one of those people really digging the direction taken by 'Origins' and 'Odyssey.'
It's the recipe of fast-paced, brutal combat and reasonably detailed character progression within a beautiful open world that floats my boat!

FPS. Basic tribal violent need to shoot at things.

Fighters. Can always get back to them and have a blast

I'm a sucker for open world RPGs. Witcher 3, Mordor, Horizon Zero Dawn, Assassin's Creed, Spider-man, etc. Roaming the world for hours while ignoring the impending doom of the main quest because some farmer needs to find out what is slaughtering his chickens.....yes, I'm all in. Give me a nice loot system and some kind of leveling up mechanic so I can become a major bad-ass and I've got a game to sink 100+ hours into, easy.

Definitely RPGs! They are super time consuming but there is nothing as immersive in my opinion as a good story you feel you're truly a part of... Something only gaming can do :).

For me it is the First Person Shooter. DOOM was the first game I played online and I remember how it triggered shooters like Duke Nukem 3D before the internet took off when we had to connect via modem. This gave way to Quake and Internet based play which in time became Call of Duty, Battlefield, and countless others.

Mine would be Roleplaying as well

For the narrative plus the possibility of side stories mixed in to it as well. Plus also the freedom & choices such as

- option to do something else like sub stories or activities in the meantime like a break from the main story
- choices of weapons, armor, accessories, etc
- character development & building or party choices to suit your play style
- variety of enemies leading to different strategies
- more engagement due to the longer play times but needs a balance (e.g. the padding and mechanics in XB2 leading to grind was just too much).

- "Action-adventure"

I like starting on a journey coupled with an overarching story like say the the GTA series. A game that draws you in with twist and turns and engaging combat. One with mystery, depth, challenge and even puzzle solving like say the Zelda series.

Shooters like Overwatch where the seasonal content and dare I say loot box system is superior.

RPGs. JRPGs. WRPGs. MMORPGs. You name it. If it is RPG in any way shape or form, I am going to favor it.

Role Playing games. Runescape to be specific. I grew up on that game. Still play it today. It molded my childhood, similar to Age of Empires. The people I met, hours spent online. Even recently I met a friend in Venezuela. Now we are friends outside of Runescape.

Open world WRPGs - Witcher3 and RDR2 are probably the best. At a time is was probably shooters and sports games, but hasn't been for a while.

Action adventure/open world rpg. I just love exploring and discovering things in the beautiful world devs make

platform games, because they're fun and challenging at the same time.

RPG's easily, but to specify I'd say I like Fantasy RPG's the most. Creating my own character, going into a world filled with monsters and villains, playing trough an amazing story. Why I added Fantasy, is that I prefer those storylines that involve magic of some kind. I use magic as a broad concept though, I consider the Force in Star Wars magic, bending in Avatar or biotics in Mass Effect. So if there's anything like that with a bit of mysticism, then it's my kinda RPG.

As much as i like being ‘’unique’’, I’m gonna go ahead and be that guy saying survival action. Based solely on TLoU. That game simply made it that I seek out all the survival action/survival horror games that I can find, in the hopes that maybe just the gameplay will come close to that of TLoU. It rarely does though.

RPGs.

Getting lost in the worlds and characters really got/gets me through a lot. Whether it’s ones with a preset story or the ones where you would create your own story.

Not only that, I love the leveling and crafting gameplay.

Real meaty role-playing games, far and away.
At the beginning of this generation I had a goal to try genres that hadn’t really interested me before. This lead me to great experiences such as Rocket League, Hotline Miami, Life is Strange, and Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc, just to name some of the standouts.

RPGs in general but probably mostly JPRGs ever since the PS1. Absolutely love the characters, story, exploring the world and cities, battle system, leveling up and getting new skills/magic. Final Fantasy 7-9, Brave Fencer Musashi, Legend of Dragoon, Breath of Fire 3, etc started it all for me.

Open World games. For the the variety. Cooperative preferred.

Fps, ive always been more immersed and just had more fun with them. Throw in some rpg elements like fallout 4, and thats my jam.

JRPG

I’m sure everyone has a different reason, but for me it is the stories. I like my games to be long enough that I can form an emotional attachment to my character and explore the world.

3rd person action adventure is my favorite genre.
I enjoy being sneaky and stealthy and have to find a way to deal with enemies

RPGs but that starts due to good stories and lore built into the world

RPGs. I like character management and the feel of progression when getting new gear and skills.

This is really easy....jrpg! Games like chrono, secret of mama, draqon quest and later octopath and xenoblade, i will never forget!!

I enjoy them because i like the build of a caracter. Some times their story are interesting too.

I tend to gravitate towards 3rd person story-based action/adventure games. I do, however, also love the Souls/Bloodborne games a lot.

I think mostly it's because I enjoy cinematic qualities of those games, and the journey it takes you through. They're not all gems, but I've not really been disappointed with the stories I've experienced so far.

I'm been in love with RPGs and JRPGs!

After giving it some thought, I would have to say RPGs. I love the amazing story and sup-ing up your character. I also love the variations in battle systems as well as the infusions that are possible with other genres of games (survival horror, action, adventure, etc.) The possibilities are endless. But the feel of progression and accomplishment in a realized world is unparalleled.

What drew me into gaming was rpg's. I love the adventures, puzzles, story's, fights and just the emmersive gameplay. Plus I found them to be alot more relaxing overall.

Collect-a-thon platformers, they always felt the most satisfying to me.

It tends to change around for me as I don't generally like to stick to playing the same kinds of games all the time. If I get into a huge AAA open world game I might follow it up with a simplistic indie platformer. If I've been playing quite a bit of Japanese games lately, I might jump into a Western developed title next. As much of a cop out as it sounds, variety is my preference. If I had to mention something I've been playing more than I usual do this year, it's open world games.

RPG! I get so invested in customization and inventory management. I am also a completionist so I love spending ridiculous amounts of time on large open world RPGs.

Definitely RPGs are my favourite. They give a certain magical experience in games that lets me play out a fantasy adventure. The character progression, long but paced story with interesting twists and many many customization options make them a joy to play.

I guess action adventure games.
Even though I enjoy everything from RPGS, FPS, fighting, racing, etc.

RPG because the way it allows you to build your character. It's very rewarding, and it gives you the feeling of: I work/fight hard to be as strong as I am now, and to have what I have.

Action adventure games, but in the last year or so I really liked indie developers because they are mixing stuff and making unique experiences. With Hollow Knight I remember that I love platformers...metrovania stuff.

3rd person shooters for me. It's like watching a movie with the camera behind the main character

Big open sandbox games such as GTA or Red Dead. Loving to just explore and get lost, while randomly doing a side mission or just getting into trouble :)

What is Borderlands? Shooter, Action, RPG? In any case, that is my favorite game series and type of game that I really enjoy playing. Especially when the games are coop multiplayer. I love these type of games for the progression systems and all of the different ways to customize and make your characters your own.

3rd person/Action adventure. The 3rd person view i think is the best because you can see your character move and dress style, its also cool to see your character in front of you being controlled

Definitely RPGs. From Final Fantasy 1 and Phantasy Star II, all the way to Mass Effect and Dragon Age, along with Lunar and Chrono Trigger in between, there's something special about gradually finding the strength to win while on a journey with characters you never wanna say goodbye to.

Rpg, great story telling and gameplay keeping you interested in playing through the game. Some of the best games ever are rpgs.

It's a tough call between RPGs and single player action/adventure narrative focused games (Last of Us, God of War, Uncharted, etc.).

One I prefer more for gameplay and immersion (RPGs), and the other for storytelling and pacing.

Role playing games are my preference and I don't expect it to change. Building a character is something I enjoy doing and slowly powering them up through levels is a fun game mechanic to me. Keeps me interested and makes for easier time anyway because I can always think if i lose a battle i just need to increase my level.

My favorite genre is metroidvania games. I love being able to explore and the 2D interface. These games typically have very tight controls and combat is fantastic. I also love the feel of upgrading your gear to be able to progress to previously unreachable areas... But who am I kidding, I love almost every genre! 😁

I play a lot of different genres but I'd have to say fighting games are my favourite.
Whether I'm playing for awhile or just want to play a few rounds there's always something satisfying about pulling off some sweet combos.

I've always enjoyed RPGs and the deep long story the follows it. There something extremely satisfying about getting stronger over time.

Rpgs, give me a story. I love the exploration, tactics employed for the battles, sense of overcoming a great obstacle/enemy, attention of details towards environments, sidequests that really payoff, and a nice balance involving a little bit of a grind to give your character(s) an edge.

I love RPG's the most. It truly what started my undying love for gaming. There's nothing like an RPG that presents an engrossing story and addicting gameplay mechanics that never get old.
I do love Western RPGs in the likes of Mass Effect, Dragon Origin, the Witcher.
But my heart belongs to JRPG's. The Shining Force series is my favorite hands down.
My other favorites are Panzer Dragon Saga, Dragon Force, Star Ocean, Grandia, the Chrono Series, as of late the Xenoblade series. I also love Fire Emblem. And I'm giving some love to the tales series as well as Atelier games.
For me it all started with Secret of Mana and Zelda.

Open world RPGs

Ones you can really get your teeth into

Easily RPG's. If you think about it logically, RPGs not only allow for an elaborate and expressive way of playing and getting enveloped, but they also can carry traits of other genre's and sub-genre's. Best of both worlds.

Favorite genre is shmups but the one Ive had the most fun with is racing.

I'm a sucker for your typical ubisoft open world type. Even though I recognize the bad ones, I just keep dumping hours into them.

RPGs. Why? The stories, music, exploring, character building, playing as different characters, etc. I enjoy it all.

Shooters. I like shooters. From 3rd person to 1st person. I loved playing hours and hours of SOCOM games.

I don't think I really have one specific genre that I've enjoyed more than any others. That's not to say that there aren't genres that I love a ton.

I think my favorites would have to be RPGs, Racing Sims, and whatever it is that you want to call Rocket League. =P They're probably all pretty much equal to one another, with maybe the shift focusing here or there depending on what I'm more into at the moment. I also love the types of engineering "puzzles" that those damn Zachtronics games offer, but throwing them into the puzzle game genre would not do them justice.

But, I really love racing sims and Rocket League because they really feed my competitive side, with Rocket League being the easy to pick up and play game that finds itself to be very challenging at higher ranks, and stuff like iRacing, which is difficult to pick up and get going with and impossible to master. VRC Pro is also a really great challenging competitive RC sim, I just wish more people played it.

I don't play these games to be spoon fed cosmetics as a means of progression, but to (not only) go against others with similar, yet unique, qualities, but to really challenge my own mind and abilities and get to see and really feel myself improve. That's the kind of rewards that I'm after, the kind that takes time and makes you really feel something after all of the effort that you put in to be better. I'm also looking for the same thing out of my RPGs as well (and just about any other type of genre).

RPGs, the ones that make you grind but have fun the same time.

It's definitely RPG's . . . Especially strategy or turn based. Action RPGs often fall into this weird middle ground where they're not particularly good action games or RPG's. I'll eat strategy or turn based RPG's right up though.

Very tough one. It's either Platformers or RPGs ( JRPG to be exact ) You can throw the crappiest JRPG's or Platformers at me and I would still probably enjoy them. Ever since I played Sonic and Shining Force, I have always loved them.

RPGs are my go to and most enjoyable for me! I’m not too particular about what type of RPG, but anything with good progression and a good story always makes me feel satisfied when I spend a good amount of time playing.

What's more fun now is more games are heading toward RPG elements. Assassin creed to God of war have completely changed from simply action adventure to action adventure with deep RPG elements

I don't know what it is but seeing those damage stats number pop up on screen just gives more satisfaction to players. Borderlands 3 hopefully will make major changes and make it even more of a RPG

Metroidvania is a big contender for me. A neat little package with great gameplay, lots of secrets to discover and entertaining bossfights.

I tend to not like one single genre though. I generally like genre oddballs with interesting gameplay, like some of my favourite games:
- Ghost Trick entrancing me with an amazing, but quirky puzzle mystery.
- Ace Attorney putting an active mystery spin on the visual novel genre, making me pay attention to all the details.
- Sexy Brutale allowing me to fiddle with time to put the pieces together properly.
- 999 and Virtue's Last Reward questioning my choices with philosophical queries.
- Trine allowing us to fight, grapple or conjure our way through beautiful worlds.
- Limbo, Inside and Unravel telling their stories through interesting scenery and forced action.
- ...

RPGs. I read many books as a kid. I grew up with the film Never Ending Story. RPGs are like that. I get to live the story on a grand adventure. I love to explore and I love adventure. RPGs are like my own Never Ending Story come to life. Best part. I can relive the adventure anytime I want.

RPG's, bust mostly in nostalgia because of the lack of time to play 50+ hour games and also working.

I'm all about platformers...but more so what is now commonly deemed as "metroidvania" types...., that feeling of discovering a new weapon or skill and itching to try it out were you were before never seems to get old for me. that gradual progression where you slowly become a total badass i can't seem to get when playing other games of different genres.

Tell me again how the multiplatform strategy was supposed to fix everything. Look at your results and compare them to Nintendo, which keeps thriving with exclusives. Your loyal fans are gone. And let’s not forget the pile of IPs you purchased only to let them rot.

The worst thing is this is down from last years numbers/expectations which was down from the previous years numbers/expectations. You think about how long “down” has been a consistent part of the communication and you realize those subscriptions are what’s holding that boat together. The price cut of gamespass is still a price raise in a string of price raises. They are trying to use players to offset the missing revenue. Now call of duty is out of gamespass, which is literally WHY they bought the company. To draw people to the subscription. They realized they missed a boatload of money and that wasn’t sustainable. Now you pay for it like you would have if they never bought the company… so why buy the company? Mind you those billions still need to be paid back. Yeah it gives you a chance to say we make the biggest FPS… but the internal conversations must be brutal at high level on topics that really matter. Like revenue. Profitability.
