The Pillars Of Gaming

I've been a devout gamer for as long as I remember. I live video games, and I love them. My feelings about the gaming industry are polar opposite. It's not that I hate the industry, but I hate the state in which it is in. What we can do as gamers is to set up a standard that all games can be judged by. These set of "golden" rules can apply to every game regardless of the genre.

1-Beauty: Chances are you're thinking of graphics. When I say beauty I mean inner beauty. The feel of the game. The stuff loves made out of. Graphics can add to the beauty, but music, art and story should all have equal roles in gaming.

2-Balance: An unbalanced game is an intolerable game. Imagine fighting a monster that's impossible to beat, or a group of ninjas that can be taken out by one hit. Gamers are similar to Goldilocks, we go from game to game waiting for the right one. A balanced game is a right, not a need.

3-Purity: A game with little to no bugs (Almost impossible) is like a virgin and needs no patches. We need more "virgin" games. I say need because a game with a large scope WILL have bugs, so its a sacrifice. Quality for Quantity. However sometimes the sacrifice isn't worth it.

In the end its up to you the gamer to play whatever you so please. I'm not forcing you to accept this theology nor am I asking you to. I'm merely pitching an absurd idea to you, that might one day become a reality. With allot of polishing of course.

Thank You For Your Time!

Good blog, got me thinking.

I'd like to add longevity.

There are some games I've played that I distinctly enjoyed only to have the story/gameplay end prematurely. This can sometimes be offset with the addition of multi-player but it's very rare that a developer has the time/resources to implement anything worthwhile without sacrificing the potential of the single player.

I'd also like to point out that my pillar of longevity is not a push for games just to be as long as possible. Re-using the Goldilocks analogy, the length has to be 'just right' and appropriate to the story, if any. It's no good if you have a 500 hour game but all you do is grind, farm etc.

As gamers, I'd say it's safe to say we've all had either one of these two thoughts while playing a game:

"Is that it?"

&

"When's this gonna end?"

I like that. I think Just Cause 2 went a little overboard with the grinding and gathering. It was still kind of fun, because I got to blow stuff up. Conversely, I felt like there should have been more to Red Faction: Guerilla. I did think that Infamous 2 was in that nice middle ground you mentioned.

I want to add intelligence. I'm not sure I like games that treat me like I wasn't smart enough to get out of Jury Duty.

Great concept. I'd add...

Polish. It's games like Batman:AC when you enter the menu and see all's been thought of. Neat interface, useful information on the minimap, everything just seems to click and please you instead of annoy.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit13d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
