So "U" Got Your Price Drop ~ Still Think It's Done-For?

AKR|4644d ago |Blog Post|32|

If it's one complaint that people have been having with the Nintendo Wii U, is that - for various reasons - people consider it to be too expensive.

At launch; the Wii U was offered in to variations:

"Basic White" - which included an 8GB white-model, an HDMI cable, Gamepad AC adapter, and console AC adapter. $299

&

"Deluxe Black" - which included everything in the Basic package ~ plus - a 32GB black-model, Nintendo Land, console stands, Gamepad cradle and Gamepad stand. $349.99

Nintendo took this route to make sure that their new system was accessible to any and everyone - those who had money to blow and those who were on a tight budget. Yet, it actually happened to be the more expensive option that sold more.

But despite the fact that most flocked to the more expensive deluxe-model, for whatever reason, some still considered it to be too expensive.

So now what has Nintendo done? Even though they're selling it now even lower than the manufacturing cost - they've eaten some humble pie and have slashed the price even lower. Now they've nuked the Basic package altogether and have replaced it with a Deluxe model at a the original price of $299.99

So then; that puts the Wii U at the perfect price-point. Not just a perfect price-point to get people to stop whining and crying - but also at the perfect price point to combat with the PS4 and even more-so; the XBOX One.

Not to mention that the Wii U will also be getting an onslaught of major first party titles - all one month after each other, with the Wind Waker in September, Wii Party U in October (with the exclusive Sonic Lost World), Super Mario 3D World in November, DK: Tropical Freeze in December and Wii Fit U by the end of the year. Big-name franchises that have the high chance of bringing in big-time sales. Not to mention the plethora of indie titles, and a solid line-up of 'AAA' third-party titles to accompany the masses. Once again - Now at the measly price of $299.99

Still think it's done for?

It's still not doomed. We get it, Azure.

What does this blog do, other than restate things we know already with a little "Still thinks it's doomed?! HUH? HUH?!?" comment?

"despite the fact that most flocked to the more expensive deluxe-model, for whatever reason, some still considered it to be too expensive"

What kind of ridiculous logic is that? What does it matter if most people got the more expensive model if it still wasn't selling well, to the idea that some people think it's too expensive? If expense was part of the problem, it doesn't matter if the small number of people that DID get it got the more expensive model.

PopRocks3594643d ago

"It's still not doomed. We get it, Azure."

Do you?

SilentNegotiator4643d ago (Edited 4643d ago )

Cute, poprocks.

I see you even invented times that I've said "Wii U will never sell better"
http://n4g.com/news/1342298...

Doesn't all of the hyperbole ever get old? All of the "doomed", "done for"s, and "never" to defend against criticism of Wii U's sales and tactics?

dantesparda4641d ago (Edited 4641d ago )

Its still to expensive, $150 that's it! System barely has any real value unless you're really into Nintendo games (and all those games just look on par with PSN/XBLA games. The system in my opinion is still a mess just look at Splinter Cell, its got the lowest res textures. Come on Nintendo, show me its better than the PS3/360

PopRocks3594643d ago

I know! :D

*Shrug* Just calls it as I sees it, same as you apparently. Well that and I don't throw a hissy fit when someone compares Wii U to the PS3 or 3DS and their early low performance.

SilentNegotiator4643d ago

I'm sorry if you see logical debate as "throwing a hissy fit"

Wii U's growth simply isn't anything like PS3's or 3DS's. Azure compares them in every other one of his blogs, and I challenge it.

When he rants about EA's actions, that are entirely fanfiction based on a rumor, in every other one of his blogs, I challenge it.

If I seem repetitive, it's because I'm challenging the continually repeated anecdotes of a repetitive person.

PopRocks3594643d ago

"I'm sorry if you see logical debate as "throwing a hissy fit"

Actually I'm referring to the few times you've gotten antsy about it.

"Wii U's growth simply isn't anything like PS3's or 3DS's. Azure compares them in every other one of his blogs, and I challenge it."

Your approach is basically just to yell "DON'T COMPARE THOSE THINGS" and cite specific points that only partially relate to the situation.

Sure the Wii U numbers weren't as low as the 3DS/PS3's early numbers... so what? It could still turn around and sell better which is why people continue to make that comparison. The numbers don't need to be the same for that situation to occur.

"If I seem repetitive, it's because I'm challenging the continually repeated anecdotes of a repetitive person."

Right back at you when it comes to my situation dealing with 'hyperbole.'

AKR4643d ago

I get it SN - You don't think anything under the sun can save this thing. I know, I know. It's going to be the GameCube all over again in your eyes. I know, I know.

The purpose of this blog was to show that Nintendo is quite conscience of what the Wii U faces right now, and now their revival plan has come to light.

A.) Announce a new line-up of strong first-party content.
B.) Ease back on 3DS.
C.) Announce a new bundle.
D.) Announce a price-drop.
E.) Start up commercials again (?)

...That was the basic point of this article. Seeing that so many people were complaining, whining and crying. Chanting the same stupid things:

"Wii U is too expensive!"
"$50 more can get you a PS4!"
"Nintendo isn't marketing this right!"
"Nintendo Land can't move units!"

So now they've basically fixed all that.

THAT was the point of this article. For the past 6 months, people have been over-exaggerating every little negative point to make it seem like the system doesn't have a chance. And sane people like me and a few others have been trying to show why things aren't as bad as the mainstream is making it out to be, but in the end, there's still people like you who want to turn up your nose at sensible discussions like this.

Fine. I don't see you complaining about the amount (which has frankly taken a steady decline) - of doom-&-gloom articles about the Wii U, but you find it so important to mock me for the amount of articles I write about the Wii U, that feature it in a positive light?

Yeah. N4G logic.

SilentNegotiator4643d ago (Edited 4643d ago )

You made a blog in response to a $50 price drop to "nana nana boo boo" people you disagree with, not to "outline Nintendo's plan"

You don't even mention half of the points in this comment in the blog. It's just "It's the perfect price point now and games are coming in the future, so there, it's not [insert hyperbole here]"

AKR4643d ago

@SN

"Nana nana boo boo"? Are you kidding me? Do I look 5 to you?

Tsh. Try again, sir. Try again.

My point is - People have been dooming the Wii U for half the year. And everyone has been saying that when the XOne and PS4 release - it's over.

So what I'm doing, is highlighting how the chances for that happening, are now decreased.

THAT was my point.

R00bot4642d ago

It didn't matter that the GameCube didn't sell as well as expected, Nintendo still made money off the thing. Nintendo is very good at making business decisions, and if the Wii U fails I can hardly see it recording a large loss.

I certainly don't think it's done for. May not be a roaring success, but I think it will sell decently now that the price is lowered and games are coming out.

*Ahem* I welcome all the inevitable phantom disagrees.

DestinyHeroDoomlord4643d ago

Most local retailers here don't sell them anymore and they were going for about $220 (R2200 here)...

Oschino19074641d ago

The last yr has felt more like damage control and playing down the situation with the Wii U. Even you have been guilty of such at times and lately its the same overall on N4G comments/blogs as before the PS4 specs came out, before the Wii U was unveiled, etc... Nintendo fans get even a shimmer of light and run to the mountain tops to show everyone everything is OK and things are looking better then ever.

I am sorry to break it to you but its becomming more and more noticable that there is no longer a "BIG 3". Xbox and PS are where its all at. Wii U may be a great system for Nintendo fans but a large majority of gamers who intend to drop some money on just 1 system aren't at looking anywhere near the Wiii U.

I personally have nothing against the system, but gaming isn't my only hobby like MOST people who game so buying more then 1 system is out of the question for me. Wii U barely competes with the PS3/Xbox360, how do you expect it to compete with PS4/Xbox1 when they are leaps and bounds better tech wise and offer SOOOOOOOOOOOO much more out of the box and games at launch. They are only going to get stronger and stronger, Wii U is left behind trying to catch up relying on hardcore fans to even keep it afloat.

Making a profit and being a success are two different things, the Wii U will make money, but its setting Nintendos cred back 10+yrs. I really think they need to either drop the price further just to get it in peoples hands or just restart the "next gen" within another 2-3yrs if they want to be taken seriously outside of Nintendo fanboys in the future.

PopRocks3594641d ago

Thinking a console will sell better after recent developments is damage control? I thought damage control was when you defend something that's clearly awful.

Which is ironic because I would argue there has been just as much, if not more reverse damage control where people saw bad in the Wii U where there was none. For example, I got tons of disagrees and bubble downs and was called a fanboy for saying Wii U would support Unreal Engine 4. Lo and behold, it supports it. It also supports Crytek's new engine. I guess I'm a fanboy for not downplaying that either.

You may be right about damage control in certain instances, but you conveniently leave out the other end of the spectrum which makes you look no better.

BillytheBarbarian4643d ago

When WiiU and Vita come down to 150 then people will pay attention. Still too steep for what they offer. 360 and ps3 needs to get down to 150 too.

krazykombatant4643d ago

lol you are clearly don't know how to run a business.

The $50 drop will do wonders for the console. Maybe spark some more 3rd party support again.

Parapraxis4642d ago

The price has been dropped by many retailers in the UK already...to little effect.

BillytheBarbarian4641d ago

Wii U. It's a Wii I already have that can play HD games I already have on ps360. Hmmm...dump 300 into new hardware or use the money on new games? New games. Now if it was 150, I'd think about it a little more to play Zelda, Mario, etc...and still by something new for the ps360.

Oschino19074641d ago (Edited 4641d ago )

I dont agree with you often, but you are on the right track with this, dont see why its even up for debate. At this point just getting the system into the hands of gamers is the most important thing and they are letting that train pass them by quickly.

$150 may seem cheap but with consoles the software is where the money is made, get in the hands of people and they will buy something to play on it. $200-$250 would be more likely but $150 would def boost sales and start talks of a comeback of any sorts.

MysticStrummer4643d ago

The price drop itself means nothing unless sales and dev support get better.

Personally, I still wouldn't buy a Wii U at the new price.

ZodTheRipper4642d ago

This is it. WiiU needs games and selling points, not price drops.

R00bot4642d ago

Are you going to buy it when MK8 comes out? Or are you waiting for Smash Bros.?

Crazay4641d ago

Yep. They're screwed. They have very little to offer a majority of gamers. The kids who just had to have a Wii a few years ago, have long since traded in their system and graduated from the kiddie friendly titles of Nintendo to more mainstream mature titles.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio16d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing16d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit16d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing16d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9216d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
