You took the time to post your blog entry, so I'll take the time to give my thoughts in reply.

If WiiU was something people simply saw and had to own there would be no need for a token $50 drop, Nintendo could pick a number out of the sky and profit (as they did with Wii).

The fact there is a $50 drop is neither here nor there, there aren't millions of people holding out for such a small percentage fall and ready to suddenly rush out and snap one up. probably they saw themselves far too close to the price of a ps4. $50 is barely equivalent to a game.

Only a massive price drop could make people who are fairly "meh" (hi, Reggie!) to the whole idea of Wii U take at least some notice, but even then it'd probably do little good - see reaction to huge price slashes in UK from both retailers and consumers.

Wii U has essentially already flopped, there's no turning around the fortunes of the platform in the eyes of publishers and gamers at this point, there's already a whiff reminiscent of the final days of the Dreamcast in the air - it seems inevitable. Once a console has that stigma attached to it where kids are laughed at in school for owning the "Atari Jaguar" of its generation you don't come back from there.

And I'm not saying any of this as a Nintendo hater - far from it. Wii U might be the first Nintendo console I have not and probably will never own, but that's far from how it's been in the past. On handhelds I had GB, GBC, GBP, GBA, GBASP, GBASPNes, DS and even a VB in there, too... (I am yet to purchase a 3DS). With consoles I went from NES to SNES to N64 to GC and finally to a day one Wii where our love affair ended in record time after just two months of inane waggling and dust accumulation - it was not my thing at all.

So I think I answered the question in the title "Still think it's done for?" - Yes, I do. Not just for the reasons stated above but because of much more compelling propositions from the competition:

Wii U cannot compete at this time with ps4 or xbox one on any level. Being cheaper is irrelevant in the early months of a console cycle - early adopters do not care about unit cost - they want the shiny and they want it asap and will throw their money at it. Wii U has completed that phase.

Wii U cannot compete with ps3 or xbox 360 for a number of reasons. It's behind on price. It's behind on game library and game cost - there are thousands of titles for ps360 that can be had from a few dollars upwards and all the big titles will continue to come out on ps360 for a few years yet and not just a few half-hearted ports here and there. Multiplats on Wii U always come with something holding them back, often they barely seem a better version than those on 6 or 7 years older hardware. It's behind on services - it has nothing to rival Live Gold or ps+.

Wii U cannot compete with tablets, phones or even the Wii itself. The casual and gimmick game market has moved on and does so rapidly, a fixed platform with a 5-7 year cycle is irrelevant.

One slight possibility for a few thousand extra sales - Wind Waker pack-in bundle might make some people cough up - it worked with me for a 2nd GC.

The people who believe there will be a similar turn-around in fortunes that the 3DS saw once the games begin to arrive are in for a letdown... that market is completely different to the home console scene, nothing like as competitive or varied and a number of the games that are coming barely look to be up to the task.

Lol with ps4 and xbox one coming out, yes doomed if it doesnt at least drop to 250, which it will within the first year of their release.

Tell me again how the multiplatform strategy was supposed to fix everything. Look at your results and compare them to Nintendo, which keeps thriving with exclusives. Your loyal fans are gone. And let’s not forget the pile of IPs you purchased only to let them rot.

The worst thing is this is down from last years numbers/expectations which was down from the previous years numbers/expectations. You think about how long “down” has been a consistent part of the communication and you realize those subscriptions are what’s holding that boat together. The price cut of gamespass is still a price raise in a string of price raises. They are trying to use players to offset the missing revenue. Now call of duty is out of gamespass, which is literally WHY they bought the company. To draw people to the subscription. They realized they missed a boatload of money and that wasn’t sustainable. Now you pay for it like you would have if they never bought the company… so why buy the company? Mind you those billions still need to be paid back. Yeah it gives you a chance to say we make the biggest FPS… but the internal conversations must be brutal at high level on topics that really matter. Like revenue. Profitability. And ROI for the shopping spree.
