US gamers:Where is the outrage?

As I peruse the news stories today on N4G I notice that there is very little discussion about what is occuring in Washington today. If you are unaware there is a meeting with industry insiders and our VP regarding resolution to stem mass school shooting and the like.

If you know anything about politician in general, its that they love to point out the evils of Video games and the liberal ones love to equate video games and firearm violence in the same breath. All tough I am a staunch 2nd Amedment supporter i wont bombard you with my feelings here since this is a gaming site but if what comes from these meetings is what I expect our 1st Amendment freedoms will also get trampled. If we don't give notice to this and accept the facts of our political nanny state it is only a matter of time before our game and gun laws mirror those of Australia. For all of you zombie killing, COD loving fanatics out there take notice. If our over-reactionary politicians get their way these games and many others will start getting banned for sale in this country and if that happens then they will stop being made at all.

I urge each and every visitor of voting age to this site to get on the phone this week and call your Congressman and Senator and let them know how you feel about overreaching legislation that will restrict or ban the content of video games. Time has shown that gamers as a whole reject senseless and purposeless violence in games and the overwhelming majority of us are not unstable nutters who believe we a Tommy Verseti or Mason from Black Ops. We can not continue to let our politicians herd and group us based on the actions of a few insane individuals. But in the word of the Chicago Godfather Mayor Rahm Emanuele "You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it's an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before" its clear that that is what is occurring this week in Washington. In one fail swoop unless we speak out we will see a major hit to both our 1st and 2nd Amendment rights.

I can't speak for everyone, but I lived through the Colombine shootings when Doom was blamed. I lived through the NES era when Nintendo was attacked by the Senate as "an evil Japanese toy company corrupting our young children". I would imagine that most of the people here are old enough to remember the panic surrounding Rockstar's games (Manhunt, Grand Theft Auto, etc) and Mr. Jack Thompson.

Hahaha, now that I think about it, this "controversy" surrounding the school shooting is absolutely nothing compared to the drama that Jack Thompson drummed up before he was disbarred.

So I can't help but laugh at every new attempt at banning this or that videogame.

SilentNegotiator4924d ago

Uhhh, maybe you're just not seeing all of the articles, but I've seen plenty of outrage.

TheFirstClassic4923d ago

Yeah a lot of people are complaining about this.

On n4g "PS3 overtaking 360" is far more important than the senate and gaming companies talking - which is very important. On another gaming website they have at least 2 articles on the main page about the latest talks and what's been discussed, no final words yet however. On here if it's not console bashing or "my console sold more than yours" then it's not front page worthy, or worth even reading.

I remember during the Columbine shooting they swore Doom was "the" reason and banned it on AOL; and the NRA is swearing "video games" is the reason for the recent shooting. I've played games since I was at least 3, and I played my share of violent games; I remember when Mortal Kombat first came out and there was big talk about how "violent" it was back then, and the ESRB had to be formed. The few intentions I had on harming someone what I would do is boot up a game instead, play for a few hours, and I was calm down enough to settle differences or at least seek an alternative solution that didn't result in violence.

Instead of blaming games how about blaming irresponsible parenting, the media for over-fabricating negative news, and stop finding scapegoats for people who have little to no responsibility for their actions.

I lost respect for the NRA. I much do respect the right to bare arms, and I'm not even American. Guns are a tool used to defend yourself. Guns aren't to be blamed for the shooting nor is video games. Any gun laws take the gun/tool out of innocent peoples hands and puts them in the criminal hands. Their criminals, of course they will get a gun, leaving innocent people no way to defend themselves.

I don't think the sales topics are more important in the way you imply. Truthfully a lot of people on here have been gaming for a while. This whole thing is a non-issue for us. It comes and goes in the same way every time. Lots of hype, lots of melodrama on the part of politicians and activist groups, but nothing ever comes from it except the same conclusion that it always has.

Jack Thompson, as mentioned above, probably got the furthest along with his campaign, but that was all because of lies and misdirection.

Anyhow, for some reason I guess sales articles never get old in the same way.

Before Video Games were on the Hitlist, it was Dungeons and Dragons. Before that, it was rock music, before that blues, before that Jazz (or maybe jazz came first) before that Ulysses by James Joyce... popular media, in whatever form, is most likely to get blamed. This is nothing new.

........... You lost me once you started that "liberal" mess. People get to me when they start using those words. Liberal, Conservative. If you haven't noticed, over the past few years, it has been FOX that has tried to start a video game backlash. Now, onto your topic......

People have become comfortable with their lives. No one wants to do anything when it comes to action, to anything. Any type of protest against the machine and you are labeled as a trouble maker or a nuisance, as was the case with the occupy wall streeters. Every citizen in this country should have been protesting on Wall Street. Whether you are a Republican, Democrat, Independent, or whatever. Fox news, every broadcast called them Lazy Bums.

We have lost all of our politicians that were not scared to die to make a change. Lincoln, The Kennedy's, MLK. These guys knew that the things they were doing would/could get them killed. Mainly because they were going against the rules of the "institution". Most of the politicians are just puppets, including Bush JR, OBAMA, and Romney had he been elected.

The American populace whether Right wing, or left wing, doesn't care about an issue, as long as they can go about their life as usual. Gun Control? Dont care as long as it doesn't affect their weekend fishing trip. Video Game Bans? Dont care as long as they can have the next IPAD that comes out, and to add most citizens blindly party vote anyway so that adds to it.

I WILL STOP NOW BECAUSE I AM ON A BLIND RANT, LOL.

Megaton4923d ago

Yeah, it's very obvious that he's coming from the standpoint of "I'm terrified of the world, and I've been told liberals are to blame". Ironic, considering it's mostly the people who hold his same beliefs that are now blaming video games for all of America's problems.

The most damaging legislature from our government tends to have sweeping bipartisan support. It's not a left or right thing. When it really counts, they both fail the country together.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing67d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9267d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit67d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing67d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9267d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
