What If Developers Bought and Used Mods for Patches/Content

If you're a PC gamer you've become accustomed to the concept of mods and their bearing on the PC world. Over the years some games have been saved thanks to user mods while others have used them to greatly extend the life of there titles. So given the prevalence of mods I can't help but wonder if they couldn't be used more by developers.

What if developers bought mods from users and made them into patches?

I would love this.

Its a great idea for everyone involved. The mod creators get credit and attention for their projects. The developers get to make money on free content.

Its a win = win situation.

It would also lead to a standardization in quality when it comes to the mods. As any mod user will tell you, all mods are not created the same.

nope because then we'd have to pay for them in some way.

So your against fixed games and a few people getting some cash which is hard to come by these days....

vortis5149d ago

We already pay for CoD map mods, do we really need a "taxation" on all the good mods? It's nice in theory, just like DLC but we all know what happened with DLC.

I can easily see this becoming exploited and driving away a lot of dedicated gamers.

Who said we would pay for the mods???

Intentions5150d ago

It would be a win win. Cause the modders get something, and the game would be fixed. Usually the modders make the game better (performance etc, [just judging on some games]).

But then I don't see this happening. Cause the developers could just hire the modders.

I don't think they'd always hire them. It would defeat the whole purpose of using mods as content. More expensive to hire a person than to buy a mod.

I know everyone hates COD, but the first mod that must be brought out if this were to ever happen is the Star wars Galactic warfare mod. Not too many people play it on PC anymore and it is fantastic, would be great to play on my big tv :)

Why would I want to buy a free user MOD from a developer?

Valve and a few others have done wonders for select 'mods', CS, Gary's MOD, but these weren't designed as a traditional free modification. Developers are more than capable of informing their consumers of mods/anything else they like through the usual methods, social networks, their forums etc meanwhile giving the credit where due.

vortis5149d ago

Excellent example.

I think Valve handles it right...mods that are too big for their own good have eventually become their own property, and that's good for business.

The rest of the mods are there to showcase community creativity. I never charged for mods back in the old Quake days and charging for mods now would just add extra strain on top of all the DLC we have to pay for in order to get the "complete" experience.

they can't get a 14 year old game to run smoothly?

That's ridiculous, lol. I'm waiting for the guy that says its too cpu-intensive for the Switch 2. This game is old af and has been released like 17 times.
