If HD-DVD is, like the Xbox 360, in the middle between next and last gen, then this is like the Wii. HD-DVD uses plenty of last-gen tech while Blu-ray tech is mostly next-gen. On the other hand, this is nothing more than a DVD with more layers.

Furthermore, the same multiple layer technology can be applied to Blu-ray and HD-DVD, so it's not necessary for it to come out. Even more, it used to be a cheap alternative; moreover, it never came out when Blu-ray players were $600 or $1200 and HD-DVD were about $300.

It's gonna fail because Blu-ray is already cheap and it'll get cheaper soon. It's not even gonna get the consumer electronics and film industries support and consumers won't buy it because of that.

I say, let them make a quick buck off of ignorant people.

VMD uses a max. 40 Mbit/s which is more then HD DVD (36) and just under Blu-Ray(48).
It supports MPEG-2, MPEG-1, VC-1, WMV9 and H-264(AVC)
It however doesn't support DTS HD or Dolby Tru HD. It only supports 5.1 DTS, Dolby Digital, AC3, THX, linear PCM and Dolby Digital Plus.
Disc sizes are 20-40-50GB sizes. (theoretically it can do 200GB with 20 layers)

It sales for $249 and comes with 5 bollywood/indi movies.
The player sales for $198 by it's self.
(I wonder if the load times are quicker using the red laser over the blue?)

If I am not mistaken...isnt this the player coming or supported by China? I recall reading about it, and it has somekind of compatibility with HD-DVD. I dont recall if it was the HD-DVD movies can be played on their machine or vice versa...but I do recall some kind of limited partnership was formed with the HD-DVD/Toshiba camp like a year ago...

Anyone else remember hearing about it?

The last thing we need to do is prolong the format war. It will be better for everyone if HD-DVD and this low tech chinese format were to just die. I want to be able to buy all film on just one format. Not have to have 2(or 3) seperate players for them all.

Blu-ray now has like a 80% lead on everyone.
This is sure pointless.
I think the VMD are Sony still just for the PSP.
I could be wrong but we still don't know anything about this format yet.

you know why this wont be accepted by the masses? because people are tired of this crap, for the past year its been hd dvd vs blu ray, the public will now accept blu ray after the warner bros move, the public will quickly dismiss any idea of blu ray vs hd vmd. it wont die because its already dead.

When it was talking about red laser, for a second there i almost thought you could play the VMD on a DVD player hehehe

prices for blu ray movies will go down.. And new movie titles that are released are about the same price on blu ray and regular dvd.. New dvd's are about 19.99 and blu rays are about 24 to 34 bucks..

Well if it is supported by China and India as I have read in some comments then it should be not Underestimated. Bare in mind both countries populations combined make for almost half of the world. Although India is a very poor country in general, China is much richer and is currently developing it´s markets at a very high rate. So watch out for whatever they back up. Though chances are (if they do back this format) that it will become their universal standard and wont develop much outside their frontiers... who knows... It wont be long before China starts to impose their standards to the world.

a little shaky on this wone, it uses dvd laser? i guess if it's the cheapest of the two it wins the public. most shoppers or blissfully unaware of the differences in technology when it comes to dvd formatts sadly.

HD VMD is going no where. this is a good laugh.

But if you've been to SE Asia, you know that people will still buy them. Each movie requires about 3 discs and people happily swap them in and out because they are really cheap. My friends in Singapore make fun of Americans because they went to S-VHS when SE Asia went to VCD. I make fun of them because they are are still watching VCDs! My point is this - HD VMD is the VCD of this generation and although it will never be popular in the West, I'm sure they will sell a lot of them in the developing world.
