0x10c is doomed to fail

MMGN.COM writes: Expectations can be the life force or final death blow when it comes to creative mediums. When an artist creates something that receives so much critical praise, the expectations of fans and critics reach an almost unattainable height, and are very rarely met.

I can already tell that I will enjoy it. So it depends on which metric you're going to use to determine its success. I think it will do just fine, commercially.

So because he got lucky and made one hugely successful game, he can basically forget making anything else because it'll never live up to people's expectations. That doesn't strike me as an attitude that will get you very far in life. As long as he keeps his own expectations on how well the game will sell at a reasonable level, so that the development costs are less than the income from sales, everything will be fine.

It's either take the risk and make something new which may or may not be better than your previous success... or make carbon copies of your previous success until you either die of old age or people get sick and tired of it.

Unfortunately, the carbon copy approach seems to be all the rage with the big companies these days, so I'm glad Notch has the balls to be different, even if 0x10c turns out to be not so great in the end. I'd rather have that than a new Minecraft 2,3,4... coming out every year like clockwork.

It'll do just fine. A big thing to keep in mind is that Notch doesn't follow the typical release strategy of "make it, hype it, sell it." More likely he'll release the alpha to customers the way he did with Minecraft, and he'll craft the game around their feedback as he works his way up to final release quality. Unless he screws it up so bad its unplayable or completely devoid of fun when he releases it, no one will care if its not as polished or complete as Minecraft when they because everyone will understand its still got years of development to go. Doomed to failure? More like guaranteed to succeed, at least commercially (though I'd bet money its fun and unique from a quality perspective too by the end).

I think at this point, it will have to be pretty promising with all the FPS games that have flooded the market.

My thoughts exactly, last gen was majority 3rd person but hugely varied, this gen has been an abundance of samey FPS games with a few standouts like Dishonoured and BioShock.

I'd also need to see some pretty mind blowing stuff at this point (AKA BioShock Infinite grade potential) to get excited about another FPS title.

Hopefully this FPS craze will fade away next gen.

With the exception of 'You Sir, Are being hunted" (which doesn't look particularly interesting IMO) and "0x10c" the other three games look like pretty standard fair shooters. Not terribly impressed by them.

What we missed: ‘Lost Planet 3′ gameplay, ‘Angry Birds Star Wars’ and more

StickSkills said, "Since our staff is responsible for covering pretty much everything related to the video game industry on a daily basis, it can be tough to post all the stories we think our readers would like to see. Videos go unwatched, new release dates are missed and silly quotes just float away without ever being heard. So, instead of ignoring the news that slipped through the cracks each week, we decided to put it all in one convenient place! This week, we take a look at the return of ToeJam and Earl, check out some new footage from the upcoming Lost Planet 3 and get introduced to a few new characters in Far Cry 3."
