The Lost Console Generation is Coming

GP: "Throughout our current generation of consoles we've seen a great deal of incredible games arrive. There have been many games worth buying a PS3 or 360 for and overall it's been a great time. Sure, we've seen the prevalence of DLC strengthen and online passes, but this is the way modern gaming will be handled.

It also seems like this is the longest lifespan of a console generation yet, with the 360 first arriving in 2005. We've got a ways to go before new consoles take the reigns but when we do I suspect an unfortunate future for many of our current games."

I've loved this generation, but I will admit it hasn't been a perfect one.

There has definately been some big problems like:

1. Developers releasing incomplete games that require constant patching.
2. Day one DLC.
3. Paying for unlock codes for things already on the disc.
4. The rise of really casual games
5. Over-reliance on online conectivity. Some people just want to play offline on their own.

I'd add the rise of the gaming gutter press to that list.

This generation wasnt been that much fun mainly because games are much shorter in singleplayer length and the multiplayer experience is a temporary one which means that many games will be forgotten in time.

This gen only will be remembered with games with good singleplayer campaigns which are not that many im afraid.

DebateMaster5101d ago

One of the biggest problems is the fanboys in denial who love to spin things.

DebateMaster5101d ago

Don't forget the gimmicky motion controls.

agreed, i've also noticed a lack of ambition and inspiration in games this gen , i mean you look at last gen you had TONS of games like shenmue, shadow of the colossus, gta san andreas, just look at how huge , epic and vast these games were on consoles with suchl limited capacity, then you look at our current console with hardrives , powerful graphic chips etc yet very few games in this scale are found

e.g, look at GTA sanadreas on the ps2, a console with no hardrive, the weakest of that generation, then look at GTA 4 on the powerful 360 and ps3, in terms of ambition the latter was a HUGE STEP back.

Speaking of ambition FPS seem to lack in that department despite the fact the industry has been over saturated in shot, and why is it developers theses days feel that a 4 - 8 hour campaign is industry standard ? it a joke

I dunno, the AI and especially the physics in GTAIV were brilliant and very ambitious. A lot more going on in IV too. San andreas was a brilliant game and more fun for me but it looked pretty dodgy had an awful draw distance.

The fact rockstar set out to make a "living breathing city" is very ambitious and they pretty much succeeded too. Also had pretty decent and new shooting mechanics.

Sounds like you just had more fun playing san andreas, calling GTA IV a huge step back ambition wise is pretty silly.

Tito085100d ago

@ Fez- Actually, GTA4 was a bigger step back from San Andreas, believe it or not, since I have both games, & honestly, for a last gen game, SA had more going on in it than GTA4, I even enjoyed Vice City & the PSP games more than 4 TBH!!!!

SheenuTheLegend5100d ago

campaigns getting smaller day by day
i m scared that in future we will get only half hour campaign like a tv show n we have to pay 60 dollars again for episode 2
plz save me from this

_Aarix_5100d ago

Fanboyism single handidly destroyed basically all thats pure in gaming. Im personally giving the middle finger to anyone who talks bad about a console they dont have.

4th best gen and its only that high because the ds and psp were so good

kevnb5101d ago (Edited 5101d ago )

this is the gen where gaming went completely mainstream. And like an old hipster, I miss the way it was.

This is the lost console generation. Devs are just working out how to implement ideas introduced here for the next.

Kyosuke_Sanada5101d ago (Edited 5101d ago )

This generation has really left a bad taste in my mouth because for every one step forward in gaming culture there was three steps back and the breed of gamers and journalists created from these failures are the worst I have ever seen.

I'd be lying if I even said if even liked this era but there are some stuff that made me happy such as the resurgence of my favourite companies (like From Software, SNK and NIS), experiencing new levels of horror (Amnesia) and new communication features on consoles to talk to my friends back at home to name a few.

In all honesty though, for the first time ever I am real nervous on what the next generation will bring because I am at the point where this one may be last depending on the results but looking at the numbers it will not be that tough of a call......

they can't get a 14 year old game to run smoothly?

jjb198184d ago

That's ridiculous, lol. I'm waiting for the guy that says its too cpu-intensive for the Switch 2. This game is old af and has been released like 17 times.
