The BioWare Situation

It seems that BioWare, the studio behind such beloved titles as Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and the more recent Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect, have been under a lot of fire as of late. One might think that they would factor these experiences into the release of the much-anticipated Mass Effect 3, but it would appear that BioWare might be getting themselves into an even deeper hole.

The day-one DLC thing was EA all the freaking way. Anyone who can't see that needs to open their eyes to the way BioWare was run as a studio BEFORE they got under EA's wing.

This gen EA has proven to be anything but gamer friendly. Their main aim has been to publish some of the most fun games imaginable while milking gamers like the fat cows that they are.

SilentNegotiator5179d ago (Edited 5179d ago )

Who cares? Bioware IS EA now. There's no point to this "but if Bioware HADN'T sold out to EA...." thing.

Bioware backed up EA's lies all the way.
'Bu-but he would have lost his job if he didn't!'
Right, as he is an EA employee.

"like the fat cows that they are"

I'm not a fat cow I'm a fat pig - get it right.

But yeah EA have really driven the "industry" into the games industry haven't they? I understand the position many people have which is that EA is a corporation and that a corporation's responsibility to its employees, stock holders and even the economy is to make money no matter what. That's reasonable and as much as I hate Activision and EA the reality is if that sort of money was offered in front of us we'd probably go insane. Fuck day 1 DLC I'd cut off a small child's finger for the sort of money these people must make.

But that doesn't mean we have to accept it with a grin on our face or just play it off as straight old fact. The industry doesn't have to be like this - gamers are willing to spend a LOT of money there's no need for the greed being instigated by EA or Activision. Valve have shown that not only can you make money but you can do it without signing a blood pact.

I can't speak for Bioware and what they're going through. I can't describe whether they're in a situation of being black listed if they tell EA to suck it, or whether EA is just dangling a great big lump of money in their face. I wouldn't expect myself to be a hero in that situation so I don't expect them to either but I DO expect them to know that a game built around decisions should come with more than three endings.

Bioware should have known one simple thing. They weren't telling a story. They were never telling a story - they were just giving me the tools to tell mine. I don't really care about Day 1 DLC - they can make it all they want I'll just pirate it the stupid bastards. I think it's funny they honestly expect it to work any other way. But I do think Bioware should have been more aware of what it was they were creating. Maybe without EA they would have never had the funding to give mass effect the scale it had, maybe it was wall EA - who knows. The relationship between them is certainly dangerously symbiotic.

It's almost as though EA has these pawns it uses to bargain for territory. MoH and Battlefield man the FPS front, Visceral mans the survival horror, Bioware mans the RPG front and so on... is this really what we want from games? Like I said I understand that EA are a company but as a consumer I think they've breached a line and to be as frank as I can I seriously hope the bastards lose every penny and wind up selling themselves as gimps to ex-cons.

Just to summarize, 75% of votes said bioware is doing a bad job in all 3 areas. DLC, Ending and False claims.

Argus95179d ago

Hard for anyone to say the group's a minority with numbers like that, huh?

susanto12285179d ago

I already made up my mind not to purchase anything EA ever.

I own almost every bioware game minus Mass Effect 3 so it pains me to do this to Bioware but I refuse to support EA and their suits.

In a nutshell

Baldur's gate, KOTOR I, II, Mass Effect 1 Independent BIoware

Mass Effect 3, Dragon age 2 Bioware Under Ea's helm

nuff said, EA has not only ruined Bioware's reputation which before Dragon AGe 2 was for the most positive but they have pretty much turned once dedicated followers like me of Bioware against them. RIP BIOWARE

Pintheshadows5179d ago

You forgot Neverwinter Nights.

susanto12285179d ago

The reason that they gave for the Operation GOliath not being available for the PS3 was "technical difficulties" but here's the real reason.

EA is on a massive PR campaign to extinguish any fires and give away goodies for Mass Effect 3 to distract from what's going on right now. Therefore they were unable to get the PS3 version of the Operation Goliath form in time. I am willing to bed this Operation GOliath was suppose to come out not now but at a later date that's why the PS3 version wasn't ready but the PC and Xbox 360 version was.....shameful really

unknownhero11235179d ago

you're right, it is a massive PR stunt. In fact, someone wrote a very detail post about how they do damage control:

Bioware is garbage. Their only good game this gen is Dragon Age: Origins. Everything else from them sucked.

When logic meets EA it generates anti-matter ..... so try not to apply it in any meaningful way. Entropy is what matters in there !!

The community warned them this would happen but nope they knew better they continued with the live service push the made the art style cartoonish and this is the result

It's always so bizarre when studios announce something super early in development under the suggestion of forming the game to player feedback, and then they push against all feedback heading straight for the cliff while everyone is warning them along the way

US Lawmakers Urge Review Of EA Sale

The Congressional Labor Caucus sent a letter to the FTC warning the debt-financed, largely PIF-owned deal could be bad news for workers

lol ya think? they're sending all that work to the cheaper labor market as soon as possible. and FYI, that labor market has exploded in the last 5-10 years. They have enough people to replace every single job. But honestly, EA is over filled with useless upper management as it is. You could probably trim 25% of their staff with no real loss in production. They aren't gamers, they're business execs. Just look at how many AI related jobs they're already starting to post. Its also hilarious that PIF owns Battle field 6

Wait,

The same congress that attacked Lina Khan when she fought the Microsoft Activision purchase.
The same congress that allowed Disney to buy 90% of Fox
The same congress that allowed Liv Golf to buy the PGA
The same congress that sits back while Paramount tries a hostile takeover despite losing the bid for Warner Bros.

NOW, the suddenly cares about doing what's "right" for works? Yeah, right.

No. There were elections and some of the scum were replaced.

EA now owned by The Saudis and Ubisoft to inevitably be owned by China. In hindsight, once EA and Ubisoft started having their financial woes, they should have pulled a Koei Tecmo/Bandai Namco by merging their operations into one.
