Games used to feature simplistic morality that has become anachronistic. Tramell Hawkins looks at how Mass Effect is creating a more human experience.

One of the best things about the Mas Effect series is the companions you meet along the way. So here is a tier list of all the companions from Mass Effect!
To think that Bioware at some point was capable of doing games like this, you see those characters and remember them like good old friends, and now check ME Andromeda, Anthem, Veilguard etc and wonder what the hell happened.

Based on one narratively fitting ending in Mass Effect 3, Prothean squadmate Javik is highly unlikely to return in the next Mass Effect game.
He was one of my least favorite characters. I wish they would have done the Proths different.

Nice erudite piece Tramwell. Like you, I tried to experiment with the paragon/renegade dichotomy in the first two games, and found that there was some latitude to produce, well if not a more human Shepard then certainly a more flawed one. It is largely down to the player to put a bit more flesh on the bare bones of the backstories provided for them. After all, this is very much the Player's Shepard, and they can invest as much personal imagination as they see fit.
I had a more satisfying game with a Renegade Shep with a Ruthless Colonist backstory who was not a people person, allowing for smaller renegade decisions that accumulated as the story went on, but still make the 'right' Big decisions.
Carrying this over to ME2, was a lot easier: Shep, can I rescue my Father? No, piss off. Renegade points, but still do the mission with a chance for smaller renegade kudos. This approach quickly opened up the alternative Renegade speech options on the left, that allowed my Shep to shout people down in three crucial loyality moments and keep the team whole. Although I helped Samara, She now potentially may view me as a someone she will want to kill. Interesting. Needless to say, this Shep told the Man where to stick it.
And in ME3 there is an additional psychological element to play with.
Again my Paragon is flawed, again a Colonist background, but also a sole survivor. Goody two shoes except where Batarians are concerned, and poor political judgement. Council out. Udina in . ME2, Paragon throughout except for Batarians, but keeps the collector base. Gonna have a hard time of it in ME3, I suspect. But a satisfying character to play as.
And so on for my other 4 Sheps...including a pure paragon and renegade, to see how they play out, but there have been major casualities in all but two playthroughs...
