Why the PS Vita Will Fail

I don't think the PS Vita is going to find much success. The hardcore audience would rather play games like Uncharted on their home consoles, not on the vita.

I guess that is why 3DS is the fastest selling console of all time...because people would rather play games on home console?

Thanks for showing an absolutely blatant comprehension of the core gamer. Ridiculous articles like these are why Examiner is down to one and a half stars on this site. Not much further to go...

This guy attempts to speak as if he was the voice of every gamer.
Saying things like "we..." and "no one wants to..."
I'm sorry, who is "we"?

This guy believes that no gamer wants to play Uncharted on a handheld.
Imagine if he had told Nintendo to not make a Mario game on a handheld because no one wanted to play it outside of a home console.
Ridiculous.

And yet, Uncharted:GA keeps selling and so does the Vita.

Every real gaming handheld since the GameBoy has had console-like games among quicker to pick-up-and-play games. Including the PS Vita.

He basically wants all games on the VIta to be like iOS games. Because, you know, f*** depth and gameplay! Right?
He misses the point entirely. The fact that the PS Vita isn't made up of a bunch of phone/iOS games is what separates it from the rest.

So far, I'm having a blast with it.

"The hardcore audience would rather play games like Uncharted on their home consoles, not on the vita."

"Sony is under the impression that gamers want to play the same, or close to the same, experience on the go. This kind of experience cannot be played out in the ten to fifteen minute walks down the street or wait at the doctor’s office."

Different strokes for different folks. There are people that have always wanted a console experience on the go. If you don't want that then buy a 3DS or stick with you iOS games.

What I like about the Vita is that it further diversifies mobile gaming.

Imagine if the Vita only played games similar to those on the iOS. You'd actually then have a valid argument about why buy the Vita when I can have the same type of experience on my smartphone.

Imagine if the Vita played games similar to the 3DS/had the 3DS' graphics? You'd then make the argument on why you should buy the Vita over the 3DS as the 3DS has all of nintendo's first party games.

Thats the sentiment I've been trying to find the words to express with the iDevice comparisons. Thanks. Bubble+

MaxXAttaxX5218d ago (Edited 5218d ago )

There are many "10 to 15 min games" on the Vita.

But for some reason, the moment Sony releases Uncharted on it, every game on the Vita suddenly isn't quick to pick up and play.
The Vita has games for every taste.

The hardcore audience games their asses off, whether it be home console, handheld, arcade...any chance they get. I really hate that argument..like the hardcore audience only plays one type of game.

Karlnag35219d ago

It's the 10 to 15 minute thing that annoys me about this argument. Yes, in this world there is absolutely no situation where you would want to be playing a game on the go for longer than 15 minutes. Okay, this is true. We've just ignored long train/plane/car/coach journeys, because we can't make our shallow argument when we take that into consideration. Idiots.

It's not even just those situations though. Sometimes I'll pick up a handheld at home "wow, you're stupid. You could just go play uncharted on your PS3" Yes I could indeed, but I've already done that, haven't played golden abyss though, have I?

What else is annoying about this whole "don't want a console experience on the go" thing, is that where does it say "only for console ports" in anything related to the vita, beyond articles like these? Nowhere. Just because the machine is capable of producing those kinds of experiences (which is nothing short of impressive) doesn't mean it's only allowed to do that and can't have anything at all designed for short arcadey fun. I mean, it has ridge racer and wipeout, so pick your game for your wait. At the doctors? go do a quick race or two. Flying half way around the world? Go jump into a epic story driven experience like uncharted. The thing already caters to what they're complaining it's not meant for. RAGE.

Also, I really think SSX would be an awesome port to make to vita, since it's all about beating scores and race times and from the demo, runs take only a few minutes. Hey wait a sec, that's a console experience suited to be played in quick sessions. Oh but I guess that will never happen, you can't have home console experiences on the go, you see. People don't want that. SMFH

Or the wifes hogging the TV - watching eastenders/coronation street/ emmerdale/ river city/ holby city/ casualty or any of the other mind numbing televisual extravaganzas that she delights in torturing me with.

ElementX5220d ago

I play games when I'm at home. I used to have a DS but I just gave that to my niece. There are too many games I have to play on PS3 and 360 and I really don't have time for another console. When I travel I like to read a book.

Another failure article that should be reported and ignored by the playstation vita. This site should be cleansed and wiped clean from this type of garbage.

Looks like PlayStation took a hit with Marathon and is now quietly adjusting prices worldwide to recover the losses

andy8541d ago

Lets be honest raising prices doesn't do that when no one's buying it. I imagine the profit it greater selling 10 times more at a lower price

Pergele41d ago

Whatever you say buddy, let's all wear the tinfoil hats.

IceKoldKilla41d ago (Edited 41d ago )

LMFAO Your comment alone says a lot more about you than anything else. When has one game not selling 10 million copies made a company raise the prices of their console? Then Xbox would be costing $5000 by now lol. You remind of the crazy drug addicts on the street rambling on about conspiracies. xD You sure you don't need a hug, buddy?

ChunkyMonk41d ago

One game that Sony payed $200 million for. lol
Also, you sure were quick to get triggered. Maybe your the one who needs a hug?

If nothing else, we should be united against the real issue here. AI and unnecessary tariffs that are effecting all gamers.

The price increases are due to the RAM demand associated with AI and the US-Iran war. You can look to any business news website and local news to see that. Heck, even the 2026 Asus Zenbook Duo I've been eyeing has faced delays and has had a price increase of $400; that laptop has two specs. Asus is doing a staggered release with per-orders for the lower spec now and shipping in May and pre-orders for the higher spec that I'm eyeing starting in June. Basically, all computer manufactures are affected. It'll most likely start affecting smart phones too if it hasn't already. I can't remember the last time any major console maker (Nintendo, Sony, Sega, etc) increased the price of their console mid cycle outside of Microsoft just to make more profit.

S2Killinit41d ago

Its not the war. Its the RAM issue.

jznrpg41d ago

War is causing gas prices to rise. Transport of everything requires gas so the prices of those items go up as well. So it does have an impact

Athlon10141d ago (Edited 41d ago )

The blockage of the Straight of Hormuz due to the US-Iran war has affected raw components used in semi-conductor manufacturing such as bromine, aluminum, and helium. Iran had attacked the liquified natural gas (LNG) plant in Qatar which is a large producer (1/3 globally) of helium which is used in semiconductor etching. So it's the both the war and the RAM crises.

badz14941d ago

Oh no...should I get the Pro now before the price increase?

I dont think that'll ever happen. But i must say back in the day, they were definitely trying because they were more cash rich than their competitors.

CosmicTurtle54d ago

I think MS were and still are the richer company. They tried to acquire Sega back in the day (and considered doing so again more recently), they obviously bought exclusivity to Halo which was originally shown as a Mac title. I don’t think as a company MS can claim the moral high ground here. It’s a wilful lack of self awareness.

Of course Sony would try exactly the same if they had the resources, but when the PS2 dominated the industry was in a much healthier place with an abundance of great third parties.

This has been a depressing generation as far as first party decisions are concerned. The fact we are debating business plans rather than which game is better is a sad reflection of the state of things.

Darkseeker55d ago (Edited 55d ago )

There was Nintendo as well, Sony wouldn't have had a monopoly. In fact, the world would be better today if Xbox never existed in the first place. They pretty much brought all bad practices we have today. We might have gotten all of it either way, but not this early. In term of franchises, I don't think there is anything Microsoft released that would actually be missed if it didn't exist. Even Halo the world wouldn't notice if Halo didn't exist.

S2Killinit54d ago

MS was definitely a bad influence on gaming.

raWfodog55d ago

I think almost everyone will agree that a monopoly is not good for the industry. But that being said, the competition needs to be smart and strategic with their business. Simply buying up publishers and traditional third-party studios just to keep them out of the other companies reach is not a sustainable practice. That goes for all parties so don't think I'm just referring to Xbox.

I'm no business guru by any stretch of the imagination but I firmly believe that the best way to drive consumers to your software and hardware is to invest smart in your first-party studios. Give them full support and guidance in making unique, fun games that are only available to play in your ecosystem and the gamers will come.

Reaper22_54d ago (Edited 54d ago )

But first party studios aren't enough. They only make up a small portion of the industry. Without 3rd party there would be no industry for Microsoft or sony.Developing games take time and money and sometimes you gotta make moves to stay competitive.

raWfodog54d ago

Nah, I never said first-party was enough. I said it’s the ‘best way’ to drive gamers to your platform. 3rd-party is a free-for-all and there’s no guarantee that gamers will use your hardware to play the game. If you want to push your own software and/or hardware you need first-party, or at least exclusive deals with third-party studios.

SimpleDad55d ago

They Shure did a great job... 25 years later Xbox is dead.

Reaper22_54d ago

Then why be so emotional and continue to talk about it. Xbox will never die be ause it stays in so many people's head.

lodossrage54d ago

How can you even see him being "emotional" in that comment?

If anything, you're the emotional one, constantly trying to go at anyone that says anything against Microsoft. So when you call him emotional, it comes off as deflection

Elda54d ago

I own an XBSX & I can say it's becoming irrelevant out of the 3 current consoles.
