The Jennifer Hepler 'debate'

AtomicMPC: There's a helluva storm going on on Twitter at the moment, and it's being reported pretty heavily around the traps. It's showing up a lot of the problems with the wider gaming community - the raging sense of entitlement, the misogyny and homophobia that we've talked about here before.

The angst started a few days ago, when a years-old interview with Jennifer Hepler, a writer at Bioware who's worked on Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age II and Star Wars: The Old Republic, resurfaced on Reddit, under the header 'This woman is the cancer that is killing Bioware'.

So she became the "cancer" when DA2 came out or when ppl start thinking Bioware is screwing up, but before she was just fine?

Bimkoblerutso5196d ago

I think more than anything people are just upset that she seems to be the one responsible for turning EVERY character in Dragon Age bisexual. Which personally doesn't upset me, per se, but at the same time it doesn't make much sense contextually.

In fact it DOES make the writing team seem a little fanfic-y and amateurish.

Frankfurt5196d ago (Edited 5196d ago )

All Bioware games with shitty writing had her either leading or as part of the writing team. Also, nobody that dislikes gaming should be working in the gaming industry.

She was an awful fanfic writer that turned straight characters gay to satisfy her fantasies that later wrote an awful novel that everyone hated. Now she's doing the exact same she did in her fanfics with the Bioware IPs. She wanted to be a novelist, not a writer in a videogame. The "story mode" option in ME3 is all her. She doesn't write to suit gaming, she writes to get off on her fantasies.

PirateThom5196d ago (Edited 5196d ago )

She doesn't write for the Mass Effect team... in fact, Dragon Age, Dragon Age II and Star Wars: The Old Republic are, in some way or another, her contributions.

In fact, she's not even in the same studio as the Mass Effect 3 team (they have two studios in Canada).

Dac2u5196d ago

@Frankfurt: We need more great writers in the games industry, not less. It's idiotic to think that someone has to play games to write for them. I don't care if someone has never played a game in their life, if they're a good writer I want them working on games. Although, from what I've read so far, this woman is awful at her job.

dark-hollow5196d ago (Edited 5196d ago )

"I have a vagina AND a job.."

Wow sexiest much?
But nooo its a woman so its OK.
If a man tried to say the same, the feminist crowd will make all hell breaks loose.

Bimkoblerutso5196d ago

"Sexiest?"

Well...if you say so...

MrBeatdown5196d ago

"I have a vagina AND a job.."

"If a man tried to say the same"

There's a joke in there somewhere...

UltimateIdiot9115196d ago

For any man to say that, they must lack balls.

I don't think she's ruined Bioware adding in homosexuality. I think she's ruining Bioware by being an awful, contrived writer who doesn't have the ability to handle that particular subject matter.

She has all the finesse of a 16 year old girl writing fan fic about Sam and Dean Winchester bumming each other.

Mass Effect - N7 DAY 2025

Bioware writes: "Like you, we’ve heard the rumors lately. You’ve made it clear you care deeply about what’s next. So let’s start by setting the record straight: the next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe."

I expected nothing and I'm still disappointed

Like with Fallout, it's starting to feel studios are using TV / Film adaptations when they have no game info to talk about.

toxic-inferno188d ago

I feel the same way.

I mean, how difficult would it be for them to release SOMETHING of substance? Another short trailer? A couple of proper hints? A short story set during the original trilogy, but focused on fringe characters?

Hopefully they're working so hard on the game that they don't have time. But still, with every passing year and so little to show, the franchise will be slipping further and further from people's minds.

Profchaos188d ago

Yeah agree it's almost a cop out since Dev times are 5 to 10 years just throw out a few seasons instead you get them done in a year

jznrpg188d ago

I still haven’t beat Andromeda. I am waiting for a lull of good games in my backlog

P_Bomb188d ago

So the TV show will take place after the OG trilogy. I wonder which ending they’ll use?

Rebel_Scum188d ago

Should’ve just posted a picture of an Elcor saying “regretfully, we have nothing to share.”

BioWare needs to follow Larian’s lead and just “embrace people’s cool choices”, veteran EA developer

Speaking on a recent episode of the FRVR Podcast, veteran EA developer Alex Hutchinson—who worked on The Sims 2, Spore and Army of Two: The 40th Day—explained that the studio is already no longer the studio fans fell in love with, but it should be safe from censorship of its games’ political beliefs.

Who didn’t see this coming lol

Armaggedon188d ago

BioWare should find the center and focus. Chasing someone else’s shadow will likely lead to failure.

What the EA deal could mean for BioWare, The Sims, and more

If you’re worried about EA’s future, you’re in good company. The acquisition is unprecedented on many levels, and it throws the future of EA's studios and some of its biggest franchises —including BioWare, The Sims, Apex Legends, and Battlefield — into doubt. Industry analysts have varying predictions about what could come next. However, there are a few constants — namely, that EA will likely implement large-scale spending reductions and sell off its less profitable studios.

thorstein218d ago

How can you be an analyst and not look at Tencent and know exactly what's about to happen: massive layoffs, decline in quality, and loss revenue.

It is Toys R Us all over again, and JCPenney and Sears and so many more. EA lost is vision before 2000. It's an old stodgy corporation. It's not going to recover.

Retroman218d ago

If Ea sell studio that develop NFS wishful thinking Saudi investers put Blackbox studio back together. get rid of online racing, drive to a race or no races at all wasting time playing nfs for NO reason at all thanks to Unbound, Heat, Payback, Rivals.

They'll start working on FIFA, Madden, UFC, and some mobile games.

gold_drake218d ago

i think that games that are not Sports games or Shooters will cease to exist, since they are the big money makers.

not sure why anyone would agree to this. especially to rich saudis of all people ha they have more money than they'll ever need
