Bioware talk about Mass Effect movie, their views on the future of RPGs

SystemLink: "RabidWalker of the Official Playstation Forums UK had a chit chat with the co-founders of Bioware, Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, about pretty much everything ranging from their past lives as medical doctors to the upcoming Mass Effect film, of which very little is known. We've pulled some of the highlights below for you to absorb."

If done right, a Mass Effect movie would be incredible. Assuming they make one for all 3 games, the greatest trilogy after Lord of The Rings? Maybe.

"If done right"

That is the key. Honestly I have little faith in video game to movie adaptations anymore. The only half way decent one was Silent Hill.

kidnplay5114d ago (Edited 5114d ago )

I must say, I agree with this. All too often game movies fall into the trap of too much trying to be what the game is, rather than adapting the source material to film's format. You can't create an interactive experience in film; it's intrinsically not possible. What I want to see are entertaining films clearly set in the same universe and maybe with similar characters as the games, but with a key focus on story, visual style and - the key thing - good, quality acting.

he is the last guy that should be talking rpgs when dragon age 2 bombed, and they do action adventure games with rpg elements, not the other way around

Amongst rpg circles, bioware has become the number 1 joke

Yui_Suzumiya5114d ago

Ha .. Dragon Age II kicked @$$ and to me it's the best example of how a fantasy themed RPG should be done.

Slade5114d ago

you cant even say that with a straight face. I cant without bursting out into laughter.

Generic as generic can be.

Kalowest5114d ago (Edited 5114d ago )

I didn't know Bioware made RPGs.

Julie5114d ago

Well they used to make one of the best rpgs for me like:

Baldurs Gate I and II (Shadows of Amn) is one of the best RPGs i have ever played, i still play it.

Also Neverwinter Nights and Never Winter Nights 2, wich i just bought again with all the expansions from Steam , pretty awesome RPG and still looks nice! geeze the magic effects looks better than DragonAge by a lot! :O

But well i agree Mass Effect 2 and Dragon Age 2 are not so much in to RPG :3

If the movie becomes a primarily action oriented film then it will suck, imo. The best sci fi movies of all time have good character development, dialogue, and in the end make you think. The science should be explained a little bit, like in the first game, and it should NOT be over the top action. That, imo, is the ONLY way the Mass Effect trilogy on film will transcend the current rut video game film adaptions have always been in.

Mass Effect - N7 DAY 2025

Bioware writes: "Like you, we’ve heard the rumors lately. You’ve made it clear you care deeply about what’s next. So let’s start by setting the record straight: the next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe."

I expected nothing and I'm still disappointed

Like with Fallout, it's starting to feel studios are using TV / Film adaptations when they have no game info to talk about.

toxic-inferno70d ago

I feel the same way.

I mean, how difficult would it be for them to release SOMETHING of substance? Another short trailer? A couple of proper hints? A short story set during the original trilogy, but focused on fringe characters?

Hopefully they're working so hard on the game that they don't have time. But still, with every passing year and so little to show, the franchise will be slipping further and further from people's minds.

Profchaos69d ago

Yeah agree it's almost a cop out since Dev times are 5 to 10 years just throw out a few seasons instead you get them done in a year

jznrpg70d ago

I still haven’t beat Andromeda. I am waiting for a lull of good games in my backlog

P_Bomb70d ago

So the TV show will take place after the OG trilogy. I wonder which ending they’ll use?

Rebel_Scum69d ago

Should’ve just posted a picture of an Elcor saying “regretfully, we have nothing to share.”

BioWare needs to follow Larian’s lead and just “embrace people’s cool choices”, veteran EA developer

Speaking on a recent episode of the FRVR Podcast, veteran EA developer Alex Hutchinson—who worked on The Sims 2, Spore and Army of Two: The 40th Day—explained that the studio is already no longer the studio fans fell in love with, but it should be safe from censorship of its games’ political beliefs.

Who didn’t see this coming lol

BioWare should find the center and focus. Chasing someone else’s shadow will likely lead to failure.

What the EA deal could mean for BioWare, The Sims, and more

If you’re worried about EA’s future, you’re in good company. The acquisition is unprecedented on many levels, and it throws the future of EA's studios and some of its biggest franchises —including BioWare, The Sims, Apex Legends, and Battlefield — into doubt. Industry analysts have varying predictions about what could come next. However, there are a few constants — namely, that EA will likely implement large-scale spending reductions and sell off its less profitable studios.

How can you be an analyst and not look at Tencent and know exactly what's about to happen: massive layoffs, decline in quality, and loss revenue.

It is Toys R Us all over again, and JCPenney and Sears and so many more. EA lost is vision before 2000. It's an old stodgy corporation. It's not going to recover.

If Ea sell studio that develop NFS wishful thinking Saudi investers put Blackbox studio back together. get rid of online racing, drive to a race or no races at all wasting time playing nfs for NO reason at all thanks to Unbound, Heat, Payback, Rivals.

They'll start working on FIFA, Madden, UFC, and some mobile games.

gold_drake99d ago

i think that games that are not Sports games or Shooters will cease to exist, since they are the big money makers.

not sure why anyone would agree to this. especially to rich saudis of all people ha they have more money than they'll ever need
