Is Creativity Dying? Ask Yourself This Question:

Suddenbrain: Though certainly not impossible to answer, here’s a challenge I came across that I found a bit unsettling: Name 1 game you’ve played this year that BOTH has a story, and isn’t a sequel. Sure its easy to come up with a short list of great indie titles and maybe a few more mainstream games, but what about the games we all drooled over?

It is :'( Most devs these days care about the money instead of the fans. Hitman absolution is one that comes to mind.

Developers can't risk losing money right now. Everyone is trying to survive in a horrible economy. If they make a profit that's better than going out of business. Why can't people see how bad the world economy really is? It's horrible. And it won't be getting better for a while. New IP's means a big chance of poor sales. And maybe going out of business.

"New IP's means a big chance of poor sales."

Yep, sure does. Just like games along the likes of Heavy Rain and L.A. Noire.

"...but what about the games we all drooled over?"

What about games that may not have been to your liking and over which you did not personally drool but were instead lauded by the general public?

Why not consider games that were remarkable yet lacked the exposure of titles with a bazillion dollar budget?

Such pieces rapidly become opinion laden rather than informational, particularly when a writer judges that which he finds personally interesting rather than considering what appeals to a large section of the gaming public.

It isn't creativity that is dead. Not in the least.

Rather the issue lies strictly with the money hats who are unwilling to risk capital on a new IP.

"Is it like Call of Duty? No? Forget it."

Inevitably such games wind up a bomb which squandered huge amounts of money and creative time. By not taking a risk, these producers wind up with the steamer they attempted to avoid.

There are plenty of new ideas and many of them worthy. It is daring that is lacking...not creativity.

"Yep, sure does. Just like games along the likes of Heavy Rain and L.A. Noire."

Those were backed by Sony and Take Two. They can afford to risk it right now. Most developers don't have that luxury. And look at what happened to the people who made L.A. Noire. They already got shut down.

Most creative games this gen are D/L titles.

-Alpha5184d ago (Edited 5184d ago )

Yes, I hate this gen's over-dominance of the same cookie cutter concept.

And I know "back in my day, gaming was better" rants are nothing new, Plato b*tched about the youth of his generation well over 2000 years ago, but it's true dammit.

Tex1175184d ago

Hmmm...Dark Souls? (Though you could argue that it is indeed a sequal).

When creativity dies it usually symbolizes the end of a generation ill ask a question if you were a developer would you create a new franchise for a game console in its starting years or its last years?

they can't get a 14 year old game to run smoothly?

jjb198180d ago

That's ridiculous, lol. I'm waiting for the guy that says its too cpu-intensive for the Switch 2. This game is old af and has been released like 17 times.
