Syndicate Refused Classification in Australia

GamePron: And just when we thought we’d get through the rest of 2011 without the Australian censors striking again, the Classification Board has taken out the red pen and put a big cross right through EA‘s futuristic reboot, Syndicate.

Australia needs to grow up. They have one of the highest crime rates in the world and they're worried about videogames?

Cyrax_875246d ago (Edited 5246d ago )

link to where we have one of the highest crime rates in the world?

edit: dont worry, think I found one

edit 2: actually that article I found was false, and after googling, Australia happens to be one of the safest countries in the world, nice fail benjamski

Benjamski5246d ago (Edited 5246d ago )

You're right. That's something I've heard for a while but it turns out to just be a very common misconception. Being a penal colony, it sure had it's history of crime but that doesn't appear to be the case anymore.

I also didn't mean to offend you by saying "Australia needs to grow up" I hoped it would be clear I was referring to it's government figures, not it's people as a whole--but I seem to have struck a nerve.

I know how great it feels to put someone down for making a mistake but your implied tone in "nice fail Benjamski" just makes you kind of a shitty person, while I'm just someone who made a misinformed mistake and happily conceded to it.

Most importantly and crime rates aside, Australia has some of the most disturbing censorship of all free and modern industrial nations. That makes me sad is all.

It sounds otherwise like a nice place that I've always wanted to visit and Australian women's accents are to die for and the women themselves have been generally gorgeous in my experience. Not sure I'd want to sacrifice and freedoms for it but if anything could tempt me it would probably be a cute aussie chick.

Cheers kid.

Cyrax_875246d ago

I'm not a shitty person. I just hate it when people spread false information. Now it looks like I struck a nerve 'cause you're referring to me as "kid" when I'm 24.

Also our women are nothing special, they look like other women around the world except they talk different. Personally I'd trade my aussie accent for a british or irish accent, they sound badass lol

MidnytRain5246d ago

@above

I like to call people "kid" sometimes. I think it sounds classier than "dude" or "bro." In retrospect, I suppose I should be careful as it could sound condescending.

P.S.
Irish accents are TOO sexy. ;)

urwifeminder5246d ago (Edited 5246d ago )

Highest crime rate lmao its very low actually, the gun laws have alot to do with that,we have alot of older politicians that love the queen god and old values they will die soon win win.

Benjamski5246d ago

I love seeing someone else that celebrates the fast approaching death of those who slow progress with their ludicrous beliefs and meaningless traditions. I tip my hat to you good sir.

hellerphant5246d ago

I don't understand the whole penal colony argument. That was a long time ago? Australia has 5 cities in the top 10 of most livable cities in the world, which takes into consideration crime. Places like Melbourne and Sydney are VERY safe considering they both have 4 million+ people.

But yeah, censorship here is a joke. People get offended very easily, and everyone is always complaining about something.

Jamaicangmr5246d ago

Not trying to be an ass but why are they so uptight? It must be so damn frustrating to be a gamer in Australia.

N311V5246d ago

When this happens it sure is. Personnaly the only game that has been refused that I'm frustrated about is Mortal Kombat. I can't actaully think of any other games that didn't get classified.

What most commonly happens is games that are classified R18+ in the rest of the world get through with an M15+ rating here.

Saints Row 3 M15+ Australia, M17+ ESRB, R18+ BBFC.
MW3 M15+ Australia, M17+ ESRB, R18+ BBFC.
Dead Space 2 M15+ Australia, M17+ ESRB, R18+ BBFC.
God of War III M15+ Australia, M17+ ESRB, R18+ BBFC.

This is the real issue, not games getting refused classification but children playing games that are not appropriate for them. Because there is an R18+ rating for film but not games many parents are unaware of the adult content within an M15+ game.

Bathyj5246d ago

Scottis is absolutely correct. The best kind of correct.

The clueless do-gooders who think they are protecting children by not allowing an R rating for so long are actually harming them.

Most game that are R rated overseas dont get banned here. They get let through, unaltered, with a MA15+ rating.

And the dumb thing is, the OFLC has agreed in principle that Australia should, and will, have an R rating, but it might takes years for them to get together enough times for them to nut out all the particulars and make it an actual, in practice law.

Sad.
Sad.

Bathyj5246d ago

Jesus tap dancing Christ. What now?

I thought we were through with this crap, we've agreed to an R rating, just make it happen already.

Stop treating gamers like kids or I'll sulk.

DaveMan5246d ago

Do they have a R rating for films? If so, then it seems like they still treat video games like toys.

N311V5246d ago (Edited 5246d ago )

Yes, there has been an R rating for films as far back as I can remember, a lot of states even have an X rating for films.

If by 'they' you're refering to our government then I'd agree.

Public opinion is however in stark contrast.

"Mr O'Connor said that survey built on public consultation of 57,000 people of which 98 per cent supported the adult classification."

X-Rated films are my favourite

=P

glennco5246d ago

Blame Christian groups with too much influence and a general public who only knows what they hear on the news. Much like every other western nation out there.

Pozzle5245d ago

Strangely enough, our laws are pretty lax when it comes to R-rated movies...yet they're really strict when it comes to games. Most movies that are rated R18+ overseas are only given an MA15+ rating here in Australia (IIRC the Saw movies are only considered MA15+ here.)
It's very inconsistent.

When logic meets EA it generates anti-matter ..... so try not to apply it in any meaningful way. Entropy is what matters in there !!

The community warned them this would happen but nope they knew better they continued with the live service push the made the art style cartoonish and this is the result

isarai_lee63d ago

It's always so bizarre when studios announce something super early in development under the suggestion of forming the game to player feedback, and then they push against all feedback heading straight for the cliff while everyone is warning them along the way

US Lawmakers Urge Review Of EA Sale

The Congressional Labor Caucus sent a letter to the FTC warning the debt-financed, largely PIF-owned deal could be bad news for workers

lol ya think? they're sending all that work to the cheaper labor market as soon as possible. and FYI, that labor market has exploded in the last 5-10 years. They have enough people to replace every single job. But honestly, EA is over filled with useless upper management as it is. You could probably trim 25% of their staff with no real loss in production. They aren't gamers, they're business execs. Just look at how many AI related jobs they're already starting to post. Its also hilarious that PIF owns Battle field 6

Wait,

The same congress that attacked Lina Khan when she fought the Microsoft Activision purchase.
The same congress that allowed Disney to buy 90% of Fox
The same congress that allowed Liv Golf to buy the PGA
The same congress that sits back while Paramount tries a hostile takeover despite losing the bid for Warner Bros.

NOW, the suddenly cares about doing what's "right" for works? Yeah, right.

i know its a long shot, but i hope this gets shot down.

EA now owned by The Saudis and Ubisoft to inevitably be owned by China. In hindsight, once EA and Ubisoft started having their financial woes, they should have pulled a Koei Tecmo/Bandai Namco by merging their operations into one.
