When this was originally drafted as a feature, it was to follow a very specific style of journalism. The title was really a rhetorical question and after following a very specific set of writing rules was going to give the reader a set answer. Effectively, I would be forcing an opinion given from a set of observations down the gullet of gamers. After discussing the topic with friend and fellow video games journalist Lee Armstrong, it soon became apparent that this approach would not suffice. There has been so little research and thought on the topic that we would really like to ask to reader – why do you play?

I suppose it just helps us to imagine more. You know, what would it be like if this happened, what would it be like if like was really like that. And the fact that we can play as the character caught in the middle of it lets us experience it more than a movie.
A lot of the games are things we do imagine the "what ifs" of. Like "what if the world ended?" "what if we had a war that spread throughout the entire world in modern day"? and "what if I was an adventurer looking for treasure" and so forth.
the enjoyment, the challenge, an escape from reality, and a way to relax.

To place ourselves into the character/personality of another that we may one day like to be.
They are fun...
It's a form of an entertainment that is far more interactive than any movie, show or event. I enjoy a wide variety of entertainment (UFC events, concerts, ect...) but video games really are unique their ability to take the immersion to another level. Not to mention the bang for your buck when you factor in a decent campaign and multiplayer features if present ;)
