Skyrim Kinect Made A Reality

Skyrim is one of the biggest games of the year, and there are certainly many aspects of it that conjure up exciting ideas for Kinect fans. Just a couple of days ago Gears of War creator Cliff Bleszinski even got excited by the notion.

Thanks to YouTube user KinectFAAST, Bleszinski's dream has become a reality. Using a program called FAAST, he was able to convert Kinect gestures into keystrokes. He also used a program called VAC to pair spoken words with keystrokes.

This is pretty cool. Very responsive, but it would get annoying talking the whole time. Still I am impressed.

I want to see programed DRAGON SHOUTS.

I'm glad you enjoyed the video! Honestly, I found the voice commands quite convenient, I even use them when I'm playing with my keyboard & mouse.

As for the dragon shouts, I actually use two different Shouts in the video, fire breath and ice form. Fire Breath is used around 2:45 in the video, and Ice Form is used at 4:40.

Again, thanks for the kudos!

Yeah mixing voice commands with the keyboard & mouse, would be the perfect combo. And actually add to the gameplay rather than just being a gimmick.

Well done!

That looks like a great way to play games!!!! Lulz.

LMFAO! So now the melee will really feel like you're hitting air because you are hitting air.

The irony.

Cool idea, and well implimented i must say. I just cant see myself playing a game of this calibur for more then a few minutes with this kind of interface. Kinect is clearly meant for more of a casual input device for games. Such as we have seen with Kinect Sports or the way its used in the XMB.

You just dont get the same responsiveness with motion controls you do with a traditional controller.

KinectFAAST5268d ago

I appreciate the support, and I can see where you are coming from. There is certainly less precision with the Kinect than there is a controller. But, someone using a keyboard and mouse would probably say the same of a controller.

There are more factors than just pure efficiency of gameplay. One of those factors is immersion, and if done right Kinect can help immerse you in the experience.

I'm not sure that Kinect is clearly meant for just casual games. Certainly that is the way it is being current marketed though. Games like Rise of Nightmares have done a good job of creating a intuitive control scheme, and have succeeded in catered to the more non-casual audience.

I honestly believe that there is hope for Kinect in the non-casual market. But then again I may be wrong. If your average Kinect owner is looking for casual games, we may never see this device's true potential. Regardless, I'm hoping to continue to see where I can go with the technology and I hope you continue to enjoy my videos!

Cheers,

Oh I don't think anyone would disagree that a mouse and keyboard has higher precision and responce times. Though controllers are better for certain genre of games.

And I most certainly agree with the immersion factor of games and or their controls. However I have learned that from a purely controllerless input (ie Eyetoy, PSEye, or Kinect) that there is only so far you can go with it. Sure, you can replicate quite a bit, but that lack of real physical feed back in the end would through you out of said immersion. Such as with games like say Forza, in real life you hold a steering wheel, so how exactly would holding your fists out in front out you be better than a steering wheel attachment?

Though I fully understand there has to be a level of imagination to go with it. And don't get me wrong as most people do while talking about Kinect or Move or Wii, I'm not saying any one is better than the other.

However back on topic I don't know if Rise of Nightmares is the proper game to use in this scenario. Seeing as how the game garnered much less than favorable reviews, sitting at a 53 on metacritic, and the only favorable review from a known site is from Planet Xbox 360. I have had a short time with the game myself, probably not enough to give the game a full on review or well thought out evaluation, but what I did play felt clunky, sometimes unresponsive... especially for the reaction time needed in certain parts, and, whole the game was definitely geared toward the hardcore crowd. The story was downright laughable. Then again, I didn't play a tremendous amount of it, however what I played was less than fun.

And I can most definitely see an interface like Kinect eventually become something quite awesome. I just personally believe they are going the wrong way about it. I think something like the Wii or Move, more specifically the Move is a bit closer to ideal. Though it's still a ways off from replacing that good old controller. I believe truely immersive controls need to have some sort of physical input and/or feedback. And as stated, the move has both of those.
Though it also has quite a ways to go. I bought move hoping it would be something special... ie better than the Wii. And while it is more responsive, it's basically just a glorified Wii. So I hardly use it. Hell, I haven't used it in months to be honest.

All in all the Kinect has its purpose, and place in the industry. Though its my opinion that it's been clearly designed and marketed for the casuals. Or for a more unique XMB interface traversal. Lol. I honestly believe all of these motion controllers are for casuals, some more than others, but all in all they are none the less.
