NO!! screw used games. The developers make no money off used games so why in gods name would they condone such a thing. Grow up, get a job and buy the games new.

KonGreat5311d ago (Edited 5311d ago )

Mate not everyone wants to spend hundreds of euros on gaming even though their working. Most people have other things to spend their money on. like i found CoD black ops for 30 while its still 60 euros here in NL.

But I would say out of 25 games, 3 or 4 are second hand games! And I share games with my friends, what a crime right!

thekiddfran5311d ago

Gaming is a hobby, no one said hobbies are cheap. If you want to keep this hobby alive and kicking you need to put the investment in and make sacrifices. If companies are losing money on used games they will eventually leave the business.

"Most people have other things to spend their money on"

I have bills coming out my ass but I put money away and by a new game every month. saving 15 dollars a week for month isn't much to ask when you are pulling in at least 400 dollars a week now is it?

christheredhead5311d ago

Remember those words the next time you borrow a product or purchase any sort of item used.

Gaming gets personalized like its a crime to purchase used. Of course, on the flip side of things gamers will find buying a used car, a used house, borrowing movies and such "justifiable" because there are other costs associated with those products. Its extremely self contradictory.

So next time you buy something and its not 100% brand new remember your model for buying games. Grow up, get a job and buy it new.

Well, let me tell you about another media production industry that refused to give consumers what they wanted. The music business.

They got pwned by not giving consumers what they wanted, and now they are a mere shadow of what they were back in the 90's. As far as I can tell, the physical media distribution business is all but dead and buried.

On top of that they lost the ability to do fundamental things like set the price of their music, or even distribute music with minimal casual copy protect DRM. All because they were simply too slow to accept the new consumer realities.

eraursls845311d ago

That argument doesn't hold up. When you buy a car you own it, when you "buy" software your just buying the license to use it. I buy all my games new but I usually spend less that what used copies cost, there are so many game sales these days its almost pointless to buy used. out of the 70 or so games I own I bought about 6 day one for $60 and most of the others were $20 or less within 3-6 months.

christheredhead5311d ago (Edited 5311d ago )

@eraursls84

True, when you buy a car you own it. It still doesn't make it right that you purchased used though. If you bought the car used you still robbed the manufacturer that worked hard to build the car. Its the same as games. Buying anything used hurts the initial producer of the product. All im saying is you can't degrade those who buy from the used market if you purchase used products yourself. Its the biggest self contradictory. Like I said, the only reason it comes up is cause gamers feel a personal attachment to the developers. Yet, they would care less about buying used books, used movies, used cars, used systems, etc. Its all the same thing, just different markets.

The thing I resent is when a developer equates used game sales with piracy. Every single dev that has done that I refuse to purchase or play their games at all.

plmkoh5311d ago

The reasoning behind this opinion piece could easily be substituted into the reasoning for someone who chooses to pirate games.

"Game developers have not lost a sale, they have their initial sale from whoever bought it new."

Yep, exactly, just like how game developers haven't "lost" a sale from the initial host uploader who bought it new.

"After seeing the trailer for Far Cry 3 I got interested, bought Far Cry 2 used, and am now excited to get Far Cry 3. See how that works out? "

Well yeah, you could have also pirated Far Cry 2 and checked it out, either way the developer ain't getting your money.

The whole used game issue is simple for the consumer: Games are expensive and you don't care about the ramifications of your actions, you just want your games to be as cheap as possible, after all why should you care. And as a product of that publishers have reacted accordingly by enforcing DRM, passes and licences.

IAmCornHolio5311d ago (Edited 5311d ago )

Wrong. Disks get worn out or damaged, and are still only usable by one person at a time. That is nothing at all like a pirated game uploaded to a torrents server, and is pirate downloaded thousands of times.

Day One DLC means I will wait until the game is discounted, or has a GOTY edition.

If game publishers were serious about these claims they would discount their download editions from day one, to encourage end users to buy the non-transferable version of the games.

All game ruining day one dlc does to me, is prevent me from buying their games second hand, and waiting until the heavily discounted XBL Games On Demand edition is released... Which generally only costs about $5 more than the day one DLC.

plmkoh5311d ago

"Disks get worn out or damaged, and are still only usable by one person at a time."

Err that has nothing to do with the issue...you'd might as well point out something random like a physical copy has a box versus digital copy having nothing, but here's something new to learn, you can also get physical copies of pirated games. The point being both methods: used game or pirated, the profiteer ain't going to see a cent out of it.

"If game publishers were serious about these claims they would discount their download editions from day one, to encourage end users to buy the non-transferable version of the games. "

Again, what does have to do with used games versus new? Of course publishers discount digital versions, haven't you seen Steam with their preorder specials.

The only thing "wrong" here is that you've completely missed the point I've been making, but let me spell it out for you: Developers and Publishers don't see the difference in an economical stand point because either way they ain't going to see profits from it. But including "Day-one DLC", as you have said, they can claw back profits from the utility of playing the game which you have enjoyed.

I’m somewhere in the middle on this.

I think all single player content should be available on the disk and I also think multiplayer content should have an online pass type system, perhaps with some kind of trial period so people can try it before buying the pass (if using a second hand copy).

I pretty much agree with the articles view on how used game sales can convert into brand new game sales - I bought Infamous second hand and loved it and as a result bought Infamous 2 on day one brand new.

Adolph Fitler5311d ago

Yep, its a low blow & has devaluated our used trade in games greatly. I will have to start selling my games on Ebay again now, to try recoup decent money to put towards my next purchase.

It's really a shite thing for these developers & publishers to do, especially considering the stupid online pass prices they are trying to extract from people that are trying to save a buck in hard times.

These games when are truly great like the Skyrims, UC3's, Gears 3's, etc, etc, will sell great enough new to reward these developers more than enough, so for these sure hits to scum money saving gamers for more money for having the tanacity to either HAVE to try save a buck or ten everywhere possible, or others that just can't justify the new release, new price of a game & buy it 2nd hand 3,4,6 or so months down the road is just wrong. I mean, I'm sure many of these guys (like myself), simply cannot afford all games new, I mean I have to buy from playasia, bargain bins, & pre-owned, or trade my finished, sick of, or older games in on many occasions, as my gaming tastes & needs are so vast I simply buy masses of titles for my PS3, as well as the occasional 360 game, as well as Wii games for my kids......now I have over 100 games on my PS3 alone, with many, many of the latest big releases included, in which only 1 has been actually bought as a new full price, new release in recent months, due to financial constraints....the rest have come from either cheapee bargain basement (like Metro 2033 & 007:Bloodstone), or trades, where I literally am trading 5-6 games to get 1.5 new games.

Give us a break you bloodsucking Activision-esque, greedy bastards.....If you make a truly worthy, killer game, the money will come & you will reap the rewards without having to milk the poor bastards that need it least.

plmkoh5311d ago (Edited 5311d ago )

So you're saying Publishers, Developers and investors should be satisfied with cross-subsidisation, where there is a proportion of gamers who will pay full price where as the rest can somehow get away with cheaper prices?

Here's the facts: it's business, no one aims to just break-even or sell "good enough", everyone is in the race to maximise profits.
