Why now is the right time for Mass Effect multiplayer

Cooperative multiplayer for Mass Effect 3 hasn't exactly been received by fans with open arms, with many assuming the move will distract BioWare from the single-player campaign which draws to an end in Shepard's third outing. However, BioWare is adamant now is the right time to introduce multiplayer gaming and insists its Edmonton and Montreal teams are focussed on making Mass Effect 3 a fitting finale.

I really think some games should be kept single player only, and this is one of them. Or as an alternative, develop some games with single player only first, and release MP as DLC later. That would be the best of bost worlds without hindering either mode IMO.

I'm a HUGE fan and would love to play MP with friends in the Mass Effect universe. A horde mose w/ reapers won't effect the single player at all. Side campaigns in the game's universe is perfect for bringing replay value to an amazing franchise.

No one bashed Valve when they added it to Portal, so I'll trust Bioware on this one.

Can't wait for the game

Same here EvilDead. Mass Effect is my favorite franchise this gen and the original ranks as one of my best games of all time and i will also like to play a multiplayer mode as well. Something like some mini co-op campaigns and a horder mode.

I have a few friends who are big fans of the franchise and all of them welcomed the news when i told them about the franchise having multiplayer.

Instead of people being negative, why dont they hold their tongue till the game is released. If it is released and it ruins the game, then they can be as vocal as they want.

Very well said green..guess we will all find out next year

"Or as an alternative, develop some games with single player only first, and release MP as DLC later"

You kidding? People would complain that they held it off just to screw them out of money. Now I agree ME is a better SP game but I think it'll be pretty cool to hop online with some friends and do some missions. We as gamers should at least give it a chance, I remember I thought the MP for Uc2 was gonna end up some how making the SP worse but it was fantastic and the MP was pretty entertaining as well.

AMD_CROSSFIRE_FTW5340d ago

That would be awful, imagine the publishers that want to release the SP first for 59.99$ and then the mp for 39.99$ or the same price as SP a few weeks or month later...

Quick, save the universe, there is not a moment to lose - but first help Jacob with his daddy issues, Mirana with her sister issues, Jack with her childhood issues, Tali with her daddy issues, Samara with her daughter issues, Garrus with his anger issues, Kasumi with her dead boyfriend issues, Thane with his bastard son issues and oh wait, help Grunt with his rite of passage and Mordin with his questionable research - but remember, the Geth/Reapers/Collectors are trying to kill everybody so no time to lose!

After the train wreck that was ME2 I have no interest in this series anymore. I will gladly put in ME1 again over giving a second thought to "Gears Effect 3".

Christopher5340d ago

Funny, but you don't have to do any of that to save the universe. Just means you will lose a few of them during the final mission because their morale is lower than expected.

Darkfiber5340d ago

I am never going to play this. Ever.

AbNoRmaL__aGenT5340d ago

I dont understand why there is so much skeptisism about this. I have never played Mass Effect but I hear its great. Multiplayer gives a game the value to keep playing it (lets be honest you can only play a game's sp so many times). Correct me if U am wrong but wasnt there some doubt about uncharted multiplayer?

lastdual5340d ago (Edited 5340d ago )

The difference is that in a game like Uncharted, you don't spend a lot of time navigating dialgue trees or allocating experience points. You're not pausing the game to issue squad commands or change armor or weapons based on a situation.

Mass Effect is an RPG, and RPG fans don't want to see the aspects described above go away in order to make for a more multiplayer-friendly experience.

From the look of things (they're basically just adding a co-op horde mode), I don't think RPG fans will have much to fear, but I can see why some would be concerned, expecially when all the media released so far has focused heavily on making the game look like "non-stop-action!"

drosera15340d ago

You really shouldn't comment then, as you haven't ever played the series. What do you know about Mass Effect's brilliant single player campaigns? Coming from a backround of absolutely no knowledge in the series puts you in a position of ZERO authority when it comes to commenting on whether or not multiplayer is good for it or not.

My opinion - Multiplayer can go jump, along with the twitch-shooter-multiplayer lovers that are egging it on in this thread.

Chnswdchldrn5340d ago

They are taking away, despite what they say, from what could be more added to single player. Just so they can tack on some multiplayer so idiots who cant stand a single player game will get it

way to fuck up

Mass Effect - N7 DAY 2025

Bioware writes: "Like you, we’ve heard the rumors lately. You’ve made it clear you care deeply about what’s next. So let’s start by setting the record straight: the next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe."

I expected nothing and I'm still disappointed

Like with Fallout, it's starting to feel studios are using TV / Film adaptations when they have no game info to talk about.

toxic-inferno219d ago

I feel the same way.

I mean, how difficult would it be for them to release SOMETHING of substance? Another short trailer? A couple of proper hints? A short story set during the original trilogy, but focused on fringe characters?

Hopefully they're working so hard on the game that they don't have time. But still, with every passing year and so little to show, the franchise will be slipping further and further from people's minds.

Profchaos219d ago

Yeah agree it's almost a cop out since Dev times are 5 to 10 years just throw out a few seasons instead you get them done in a year

jznrpg219d ago

I still haven’t beat Andromeda. I am waiting for a lull of good games in my backlog

P_Bomb219d ago

So the TV show will take place after the OG trilogy. I wonder which ending they’ll use?

Rebel_Scum219d ago

Should’ve just posted a picture of an Elcor saying “regretfully, we have nothing to share.”

BioWare needs to follow Larian’s lead and just “embrace people’s cool choices”, veteran EA developer

Speaking on a recent episode of the FRVR Podcast, veteran EA developer Alex Hutchinson—who worked on The Sims 2, Spore and Army of Two: The 40th Day—explained that the studio is already no longer the studio fans fell in love with, but it should be safe from censorship of its games’ political beliefs.

Who didn’t see this coming lol

Armaggedon218d ago

BioWare should find the center and focus. Chasing someone else’s shadow will likely lead to failure.

What the EA deal could mean for BioWare, The Sims, and more

If you’re worried about EA’s future, you’re in good company. The acquisition is unprecedented on many levels, and it throws the future of EA's studios and some of its biggest franchises —including BioWare, The Sims, Apex Legends, and Battlefield — into doubt. Industry analysts have varying predictions about what could come next. However, there are a few constants — namely, that EA will likely implement large-scale spending reductions and sell off its less profitable studios.

thorstein249d ago

How can you be an analyst and not look at Tencent and know exactly what's about to happen: massive layoffs, decline in quality, and loss revenue.

It is Toys R Us all over again, and JCPenney and Sears and so many more. EA lost is vision before 2000. It's an old stodgy corporation. It's not going to recover.

Retroman248d ago

If Ea sell studio that develop NFS wishful thinking Saudi investers put Blackbox studio back together. get rid of online racing, drive to a race or no races at all wasting time playing nfs for NO reason at all thanks to Unbound, Heat, Payback, Rivals.

They'll start working on FIFA, Madden, UFC, and some mobile games.

gold_drake248d ago

i think that games that are not Sports games or Shooters will cease to exist, since they are the big money makers.

not sure why anyone would agree to this. especially to rich saudis of all people ha they have more money than they'll ever need
