Is EA's Origin Really That Bad?

A lot of grumbling has occurred about Electronics arts new digital content delivery system named Origin. With the recent Beta of Battlefield 3 many people unfamiliar with Origin were suddenly forced to use it. Origin was released on June 6th, 2011 after EA's press conference at E3.

I hope not.

I just pre-ordered SW:TOR from Origins.

malol5355d ago

well
in BF3 beta i didnt even notice its there TBH
only starts when i start a game with Blog
minimize it and forget about it

Pikajew5355d ago

Yes.

I read that if you dont play a game in a while they take it away

Pandamobile5355d ago (Edited 5355d ago )

Not really.

Pandamobile5355d ago

Doesn't Steam have a similar term in their TOS? 24 months of complete in-activity and they reserve the right to suspend your account.

There's always terms that are in there for legal reasons, but probably won't get enforced unless there's some sort of weird circumstance.

Kamikaze1355355d ago

They don't from what I can recall. The one thing Valve CAN do that is similar to this is terminate your account without question if you're caught doing anything serious against ToS.

My problem with Origin is that with Steam, I tend to buy games or beat them and not touch them for a while. If that ever becomes the case with Origin and I decide to play a classic game I haven't touched in say, 5 years, I won't be able to because they would have automatically deleted that game from my account...which is stupid because if I pay for a game, I shouldn't have to worry about things like that.

Pandamobile5355d ago (Edited 5355d ago )

Where does it say anything in the current TOS about removing games after 24 months? If anything, I'd think they might suspend your account until you re-active it. They're not going to completely remove you from their system. How would that benefit them at all?

This is what section 5 says in the current TOS:
Entitlements may only be held in Accounts belonging to legal residents of countries where access to and use of Content and Entitlements is permitted. Entitlements may be purchased or acquired only from EA or an authorized retailer. EA reserves the right to refuse your request(s) to acquire Entitlements, and EA reserves the right to limit or block any request to acquire Entitlements for any reason.

We do not guarantee that any Content or Entitlement will be available at all times, in all countries and/or geographic locations, or at any given time or that we will continue to offer particular Content or Entitlements for any particular length of time. We reserve the right to change and update Content and Entitlements without notice to you. Once you have redeemed your Entitlements, that content is not returnable, exchangeable, or refundable for other Entitlements or for cash, or other goods or services.

Which basically just says they can't guarantee service forever and in every location.

arjman5355d ago

Thing is though, if any of you fail to play BF3 for 24 months, I'll find and you beat you senseless

BattleAxe5355d ago (Edited 5355d ago )

Close your Steam account Panda, you are no longer worthy. Please don't make me tell you to sell your PC next....I really don't want to have to do that ;)

Pandamobile5355d ago

Why the hell would I close my Steam account

You read wrong. (I read that if you dont play a game in a while they take it away )

On topic nothing wrong with origin except for the lovers of steam witch is cool. But then come out to knock origin.
Why because they wish to do digital distrabution themselvs and host threw there servers. Witch in return saves them money.
I like origin all we need is ubisoft to do something simular.

darksied5355d ago

I've talked to a rep at EA about this. He said they will never take a game off your account unless they refund your money as well.

NYC_Gamer5355d ago

no clue since i refuse to use the service

Motorola5355d ago

Yeah I hate the fact that the only game I'll use it for is BF3.

hiredhelp5355d ago

So why not play the free games on there then.?

Pandamobile5355d ago

No, it's really not. It's just there. It just exists on your computer until you launch Battlefield 3.

Kamikaze1355355d ago

Yeah. Most PC gamers use Steam and EA are forcing people to use their new crappy service to launch their game....well, it launches the browser and the browser launches your game.

When logic meets EA it generates anti-matter ..... so try not to apply it in any meaningful way. Entropy is what matters in there !!

The community warned them this would happen but nope they knew better they continued with the live service push the made the art style cartoonish and this is the result

isarai_lee102d ago

It's always so bizarre when studios announce something super early in development under the suggestion of forming the game to player feedback, and then they push against all feedback heading straight for the cliff while everyone is warning them along the way

US Lawmakers Urge Review Of EA Sale

The Congressional Labor Caucus sent a letter to the FTC warning the debt-financed, largely PIF-owned deal could be bad news for workers

lol ya think? they're sending all that work to the cheaper labor market as soon as possible. and FYI, that labor market has exploded in the last 5-10 years. They have enough people to replace every single job. But honestly, EA is over filled with useless upper management as it is. You could probably trim 25% of their staff with no real loss in production. They aren't gamers, they're business execs. Just look at how many AI related jobs they're already starting to post. Its also hilarious that PIF owns Battle field 6

Wait,

The same congress that attacked Lina Khan when she fought the Microsoft Activision purchase.
The same congress that allowed Disney to buy 90% of Fox
The same congress that allowed Liv Golf to buy the PGA
The same congress that sits back while Paramount tries a hostile takeover despite losing the bid for Warner Bros.

NOW, the suddenly cares about doing what's "right" for works? Yeah, right.

No. There were elections and some of the scum were replaced.

Different elections. Different scum. Same results.

i know its a long shot, but i hope this gets shot down.

EA now owned by The Saudis and Ubisoft to inevitably be owned by China. In hindsight, once EA and Ubisoft started having their financial woes, they should have pulled a Koei Tecmo/Bandai Namco by merging their operations into one.
