EA's Origin store will soon feature third party titles

For around three months now EA’s Origin store, previously known as the EA Store, has been providing digital copies of just about any EA title post-2009. In fact, Origin has been exclusively EA ever since its inception and has featured no games from other publishers. On top of this the service has restricted access of EA titles on competitor providers such as Steam, Battlefield 3 perhaps being the leading example. This week however, EA CFO Eric Brown confirmed that they intend to start bringing third part content to Origin. Read on for the full details plus more news on the ‘success’ of Origin.

The only reason people signed up for origin was because of Battlefield 3. Until they start having deals like Steam. Origin will be a failure.

RGDfleet5411d ago

I do agree that BF3 is a large reason for Origins future proof success, but it does supply some decent deals. To be honest if you check on gamergaia, deal updates are constantly there.

AngelGirl165411d ago

That true but origin will always be #2. Indie developers will always choose steam first because valve is really great to work with and they will always have more users.

BattleAxe5411d ago

Glad your being honest......I'm going to check GamerGaia all the time now....NOT

Ducky5411d ago (Edited 5411d ago )

^ ... what about steamgamesales?

As for indie devs, Steam isn't actually as benevolent to indie devs... or rather, they're quite picky on which devs they support.

There's a bit of controversy there as many indie devs have tried to get their games on steam, but valve has denied them due to their own rules.

bozebo5411d ago

lol, indie devs don't need anything like that.

Ever heard of... a website!

They actually do have a few good deals every now and then(especially on your birthday). I preordered BF3 from Origin and got ME2 for free(could choose Dead Space 2 and some other game aswell).

ATi_Elite5411d ago

Origins is the new GFWL!

eventually it will fail once BF3 dies down. Steam does what it does for the gamers while GFWL and now Origins are just money grabs that will eventually go away.

Hackers are ready to Crack BF3 day 1 so NON-Orgin play is available and that's fine with me cause I'm gonna buy a retail copy and play on NON-Origin servers.

Darkfocus5411d ago

if you buy it on Origin it doesn't even require the client to run...it would be the same as buying it retail except you get all the preorder bonus's EA's offereing

solar5411d ago

as a PC Gamer, im forced to use Origin for BF3. As a PC Gamer who buys lots of games i trust Valve and Steam 10000000X more than EA. thats EA's thorn. EA can not be trusted.

Darkfocus5411d ago

it just means better sales/more competitive prices on both of them...gamers win

aliengmr5411d ago

EA charges the full 60$ on digital new releases. Kind of a bad start to this whole competition thing. Also Valve doesn't set third-party game prices. It will probably be the same with Origin as well. Thus, no "competitive" pricing.

EA isn't about to stop raping your wallet for the sake of competition. EA has gamers by the balls, with their larger library of titles they publish, they'll charge the most they can. Even if BF3 was released on Steam, EA would still set the price.

Seriously people, this whole "competition" argument is absurd. EA believes you will pay a lot of money to play BF3 or SWTOR and charge accordingly. What are you gonna do, not buy it, HA.

humado5411d ago

Yay?
and well they make awesome $5 sale on games?

Ducky5411d ago (Edited 5411d ago )

They had the previous battlefield games for $5 (i.e. BF2/2142)... along with a few other deals a while ago.

They kind of have to offer these kind of sales in order to compete.
Steam isn't the only place with amazing deals.
GamersGate, Impulse, D2D and GreenManGaming also have amazing prices. Even GFWL has an awesome deal once in a blue moon.

EA will have to do the same.

humado5411d ago

well they need a long time to catch up to steam.
only if they release 100 third party titles in 1 day. then maybe they can catch steam anyway good luck to EA

Dojan1235411d ago (Edited 5411d ago )

You would think EA would drop the price when Steam has EA games on sale.

NYC_Gamer5411d ago

I'm not buying anything from origin I'll just buy retail copies of all the ea titles not on steam

Ducky5411d ago

... won't do you any good if those retail copies have to be activated on Origin (like BF3)

BlackKnight5411d ago

But it is one sale they cant count on getting all 60 bucks from and won't add to the success of origin as a sale point. Buying retail will only give a portion to EA since there will be distro-cost for the disc and retails cut on the game as well.

Ducky5411d ago (Edited 5411d ago )

^ Well, I got BF3 from Origin at 25% off, and they also gave me the choice of getting one of DeadSpace2/MassEffect2/MoH for free. So they aren't all that bad.

I don't see why you'd go to retail anyways when you can go to D2D and pre-order BF3 for $48.56 (use the code WATULUNKGAT).

Considering that EA actually funds their devs, I'd rather more of my money go to them than a retailer which doesn't have much of a hand in the game's creation.

OcularVision5411d ago (Edited 5411d ago )

Well finally somebody ends the Steam monopoly. This is probably good for all gamers. The competition between these two publishers will mean steeper discounts that appear more often.

bozebo5411d ago

Currently, steam is the only digital distribution platform that isn't crap.

Its not the discounts that need improved, it's the launch prices that should be a bit lower - and they would just be the same everywhere (£40, £50, £900 - whatever).

BlackKnight5411d ago

Monopoly.....GOG.com, D2D, Gamestops digital download, GFWL........there are other DD methods out there that are doing well.

Also, steeper discounts???? Have you seen the discounts on steam??? They are HUGE. The only time you don't see huge discounts are on Activision/EA games since they don't agree to such huge discounts on their games. That's the content owner's fault, not steam/valve.

OcularVision5411d ago

Remember Microsoft back in the 90s and early 2000s? They were sued for having a monopoly, even though there was a couple of alternatives. They simple owned the whole market just like how Steam owns most of digital distribution.

BlackKnight5411d ago

They were sued for anti-competitive tactics and had around 95% and higher market share making them much more of a "monopoly" than Steam.

Steam/Valve isn't doing anything that is anti-competitive (in fact it is Origin/EA who is withholding games/DLC to monopolize revenue from its games/DLC by blocking its sale elsewhere and only available on Origin, a major issue when it comes to content owner/content provider being the same entity). And Steam accounts for around 70% on ONLINE sales of PC games, which doesn't include retail as part of the percentage.

They are highly successful, but they are not a monopoly nor are they making anti-competitive moves/tactics (that I am aware of).

Ducky5411d ago

"Steam/Valve isn't doing anything that is anti-competitive (in fact it is Origin/EA who is withholding games/DLC to monopolize revenue from its games/DLC by blocking its sale elsewhere and only available on Origin"

... err, Valve doesn't allow any other digital retailer to sell their games.
That's pretty anti-competitive if you ask me.

When logic meets EA it generates anti-matter ..... so try not to apply it in any meaningful way. Entropy is what matters in there !!

The community warned them this would happen but nope they knew better they continued with the live service push the made the art style cartoonish and this is the result

It's always so bizarre when studios announce something super early in development under the suggestion of forming the game to player feedback, and then they push against all feedback heading straight for the cliff while everyone is warning them along the way

US Lawmakers Urge Review Of EA Sale

The Congressional Labor Caucus sent a letter to the FTC warning the debt-financed, largely PIF-owned deal could be bad news for workers

Trilithon163d ago

lol ya think? they're sending all that work to the cheaper labor market as soon as possible. and FYI, that labor market has exploded in the last 5-10 years. They have enough people to replace every single job. But honestly, EA is over filled with useless upper management as it is. You could probably trim 25% of their staff with no real loss in production. They aren't gamers, they're business execs. Just look at how many AI related jobs they're already starting to post. Its also hilarious that PIF owns Battle field 6

Wait,

The same congress that attacked Lina Khan when she fought the Microsoft Activision purchase.
The same congress that allowed Disney to buy 90% of Fox
The same congress that allowed Liv Golf to buy the PGA
The same congress that sits back while Paramount tries a hostile takeover despite losing the bid for Warner Bros.

NOW, the suddenly cares about doing what's "right" for works? Yeah, right.

EA now owned by The Saudis and Ubisoft to inevitably be owned by China. In hindsight, once EA and Ubisoft started having their financial woes, they should have pulled a Koei Tecmo/Bandai Namco by merging their operations into one.
