EA's Origin may be glorified Spyware, causes mass upset

In case you hadn't heard already, Electronic Arts' Origin is more than just a petty attempt to undermine Steam. It's an insidious petty attempt to undermine Steam. The service has upset gamers since it reserves the right to act like Spyware.....

Imma think I'm gonna wait till the steam version of BF3 comes out

I think I can wait that long...

EA are douchebags towards not only their competitors, but also their customers as EA graciously:

a) introduced online pass to the industry

b) deletes your digital games purchased and your entire account if you are inactive on Origin

c) prevents you from accesing your games on Origin if you get banned from any of EA's site

d) has utter nasty DRM, remember Spore and number of times you could install a game. Heck, this was true of what is now Origin a short while back

e) the Origin EULA allows EA to act like spyware while rummaging your hard drive for software history and share it with third parties with no option to even opt out

.. and to those who hate Activision

f) EA essentially introduced annual game releases

g) and also cut out competing sports game brands with their exclusive deals

h) choose to run their own game servers (from MS) so they can shut it down at will!

.. and to their comeptitors:

i) they throw insults after insults even after the competition is responding in a polite manner. Can you believe that?

j) they want competitors games to "rot from the core" so EA can win, not because EA are making a better game

So is this a surprise?

edit: I'm gonna run out of space in the comment section if EA continues at this pace.

Motorola5401d ago

I don't think they will ever release it on Steam.

Shackdaddy8365401d ago

It would be bad business if they didn't. I'm sure they will. But not for a couple of months after release (probably holidays).

BattleAxe5401d ago

They would be stupid not to sell BF3 on the largest digital distributor in the world. Activision is already taking advantage of this opportunity by starting their marketing campaign early on Steam. Ignoring Steam is like ignoring the 360 or the PS3.

latinalover5401d ago

unless you will get it for consoles

Jacobite5401d ago (Edited 5401d ago )

Think that might be a good idea ,I played BF3 Alpha played great, just had weird problems with Origin so I deleted it. It seems you now need Origin to play BF3 even with a retail copy even SP and now I here theirs no in game browser now this, what next ? ,I'll just leave this game at launch to see how it pans out.

Saryk5401d ago

I didn't know this, I need to pay attention more often. But what about people who already had items on their account before Origin?

LightofDarkness5401d ago

I'd also like to know about this one, I've got 5 EA Store games up there (ie. pre-Origin).

superrey195401d ago

Anything you bought from the EA store is transferred to your origin account.

Kee5401d ago

That's awful. And all EA games from now on will need this?

CapsLocke5401d ago

This Origin stuff starting to really piss me of.

When logic meets EA it generates anti-matter ..... so try not to apply it in any meaningful way. Entropy is what matters in there !!

cue the apologist saying that these are mostly just contractors hired for this specific project bla bla bla

The community warned them this would happen but nope they knew better they continued with the live service push the made the art style cartoonish and this is the result

isarai_lee101d ago

It's always so bizarre when studios announce something super early in development under the suggestion of forming the game to player feedback, and then they push against all feedback heading straight for the cliff while everyone is warning them along the way

US Lawmakers Urge Review Of EA Sale

The Congressional Labor Caucus sent a letter to the FTC warning the debt-financed, largely PIF-owned deal could be bad news for workers

lol ya think? they're sending all that work to the cheaper labor market as soon as possible. and FYI, that labor market has exploded in the last 5-10 years. They have enough people to replace every single job. But honestly, EA is over filled with useless upper management as it is. You could probably trim 25% of their staff with no real loss in production. They aren't gamers, they're business execs. Just look at how many AI related jobs they're already starting to post. Its also hilarious that PIF owns Battle field 6

Wait,

The same congress that attacked Lina Khan when she fought the Microsoft Activision purchase.
The same congress that allowed Disney to buy 90% of Fox
The same congress that allowed Liv Golf to buy the PGA
The same congress that sits back while Paramount tries a hostile takeover despite losing the bid for Warner Bros.

NOW, the suddenly cares about doing what's "right" for works? Yeah, right.

No. There were elections and some of the scum were replaced.

TheColbertinator135d ago

Different elections. Different scum. Same results.

i know its a long shot, but i hope this gets shot down.

EA now owned by The Saudis and Ubisoft to inevitably be owned by China. In hindsight, once EA and Ubisoft started having their financial woes, they should have pulled a Koei Tecmo/Bandai Namco by merging their operations into one.
