Should Nintendo Develop for iOS Devices?

As Nintendo continues to take a battering from its first quarter losses and poor 3DS sales, investors and analysts start to offer alternatives that could propel the company back to full strength. One of those ideas is for the Big N to start ldeveloping for iOS devices, such as the iPhone. If Nintendo ever did this, what would it look like?

Martin Watts puts on his speculating hat for Bits 'n' Bytes Gaming and tries to answer the question on many people’s minds: should Nintendo develop for iOS devices?

Nintendo can do whatever is best for them. But why not Android? Android has a bigger market share than iPhone and continues to grow at a much higher rate.

BnBMartin5393d ago

You're correct and I didn't want to dismiss Android, but my article was written primarily in response to a statement made by investors. Maybe I'll get around to that at a later date!

fluffydelusions5393d ago

Well it's true that iOS does have a lot more games than Android. Part of the problem is all the varying hardware and software for Android makes it somewhat difficult to develop for. I have a few apps on the market and it's a pita trying to track down problems that only a few people have and I cannot replicate.

SilentNegotiator5392d ago

I don't see any of the big three doing such a thing unless they met a SERIOUS downfall and couldn't afford to manufacture anymore. Like SEGA.

But Nintendo has money reserves that could probably last them an entire generation if they never sold a single thing, Sony is more concerned about pushing technology with their consoles (CD to DVD to Blu-ray) - although they did start working with android to deliver games; but their PSPhone runs on Android so..., and really don't see Microsoft doing such a thing when they create so many competing things and barely flinch when they fail (Zune, Kin, etc).

_Aarix_5392d ago

Yes the market is bigger but not the gaming market. iOS has the better gaming support because thats the iphones right hand man. I'm not going to deny android has some good games on it but its lacking in overall support

Oh lord..........

The 3ds was the number 1 system in japan for 2 straight months..........even at that price

Its outpacing the ds worldwide

Last forecast - the 3ds sales exceeded expectations, so did software. It went up

things arent that bad

TGM5392d ago

In March and April, the PSP - a six-year-old system - outsold the 3DS. It has only been in the last two months that Nintendo's system has recovered, but not by the huge leaps and bounds that a new device should ideally be making.

The price-cut isn't about Nintendo feeling generous, that much is guaranteed.

Stealth2k5392d ago (Edited 5392d ago )

SO what?

New systems hardly ever outsell an older cheaper system in the beggining

The ds didnt, The ps3 didnt, the gba didnt.

Hell the ds was getting outsold by the gba and psp in japan for a year+

The 3ds is in a far better position than the ds or even the psp ever was in......

@STEVE
and the psp outsold the ds for 2 years........

none of it matters this early

stevenhiggster5392d ago

@Stealth

The original DS actually came out before the PSP did.

Seferoth755392d ago

LOL PS2 outsold PS3 for at least 3 years..

What was your point again?

Oh thats right, you have no knowledge of gaming beyond what you read on N4G.

Please continue to ignore the facts and keep posting BS like it is valid in some way..

Really who would have thought a cheaper portable would outsell a more expensinve one.. Usually the more expensive products alwats sale millions a month more....

TheDivine5392d ago

Japan always buys older systems. The ps2, ds, and psp are always top sellers. The 3ds is doing great and people will really buy it once it drops in price, gets mario, and christmas comes. If the ds sells more than the vita after it drops would u say sonys doomed? No its just people like cheaper stuff with bigger libraries.

stevenhiggster5392d ago (Edited 5392d ago )

To the disagreers (is that even a word!?) taken from Wikipedia -

"Development of the console was announced during E3 2003,[5] and it was unveiled on May 11, 2004, at a Sony press conference before E3 2004.[6] The system was released in Japan on December 12, 2004,[7] in North America on March 24, 2005,[8] and in the PAL region on September 1, 2005.[9]"

"On September 20, 2004, Nintendo announced that the Nintendo DS would be released in North America on November 21, 2004 for US$149.99.[16] It was set to release on December 2, 2004 in Japan (¥15000);[17] on February 24, 2005 in Australia ($199.95);[18] and on March 11, 2005 in Europe (£99.99/€149.99).[19& quot ;

Ok so there is a matter of weeks in it, in Japan at least, but I'm still right :-P And the DS launched a long time before the PSP in US and EU.

Ios games are ridiculously low-profitable. Besides people forget Nintendo is a hardware manufacturer, why would they make things easier for the competition?

U.S. patent examiner rejects Nintendo’s summoning characters patent as obvious: non-final ruling

The rejection is non-final (and even when such rejections are labeled as “final”, the process is far from over, given that there can be, at minimum, an appeal to the Federal Circuit).

Good, as they should! A game mechanic like that shouldn't be locked behind a patent, and Nintendo didn't invent it either.

PRIMORDUS44d ago (Edited 44d ago )

Nintendo wants to keep wasting money on bullshit lawsuits, real smart in this economy. They should put that money aside for other game projects. On the other hand, I don't care if they waste it all either, and they are screwed in the future maybe that will teach them a lesson.

Nintendo Suing U.S. Government Over Tariffs

The fact that you have ANY disagrees will forever baffle me. And to the (apparent) MAGA contingent that exists on this website, enjoy your 8-9 dollar gas.

AuraAbjure69d ago (Edited 69d ago )

Yes, they had better be pissed after Trump told them the way they rip off the USA is over.

EveryPlatformGamer70d ago

LOL I read this on gaff, will they refund the money back to the gamers? highly unlikely. Didn't they just raise prices and pass it onto the gamers? Only Nintendo would send out the Ninjas to the US government.

-Foxtrot70d ago

That’s what I was thinking, imagine them winning hypothetically, getting a s**t load of money back which they would have lost if they hadn’t raised their prices and it’s business as normal.

It would just mean people paid more for no reason since they got the money back anyway.

Outside_ofthe_Box69d ago (Edited 69d ago )

A lot of companies partially passed the cost to consumers instead of all of it. They would still have to at least pay that back to gamers, but we know that won't happen. What's also sad is that prices won't come back down after the initial hike caused by tariffs.

People didn't understand the full repercussions of tariffs. That alone should have cost him the presidency if people knew it was a permanent price hike for consumers

Inverno70d ago

The people should sue these companies for having to over pay cause of these tariffs.

Eonjay70d ago

Naw they should sue the government for forcing the tax to begin with. No one reasonably expects these companies to absorb the taxes. Many smaller companies tried and were shut down or faced to increase prices to try to maintain their business. The tariffs effect everyone.

Inverno68d ago

I meant it mostly as a joke cause we all know the costs of these tariffs were passed onto the consumer. But it's seems no matter how vocal we are here in the states our "representatives" don't seem to care enough to represent us. And things are about to get worse.

Killer2020UK69d ago

The companies were doing what the law required then to do, the tariffs however were illegally implemented. Usually it's criminals we punish, you seem to have different ideas 🤷‍♂️
