Replacing Gamestop

Today, Amazon.com sits proudly as the world’s largest online retailer. This has been the case for sometime but it wasn’t until recently that I started going there for my gaming needs. For years, I would go to Electronics Boutique, Babbage’s, or GameStop to pick up the latest and greatest software and hardware. I picked these locations because I could trade in my used collections for shiny new games – or used ones if available. It made fiscal sense for me to shop there at the time, but I find that this is no longer the case.

No Gamestop still has better trade in values than Amazon. The trick is trading in your games when they have special deals going on. Right now you get an extra 40% trade in credit for if its towards E3 games like Uncharted 3 or Batman: Arkham Asylum.

I traded in Saints Row 2 the other day for $11.20(trading it in towards Uncharted 3) at Gamestop. The trade in value for SR2 at Amazon is $10.75 right now.

Before I sold SR2, I bought it used for $14 at Gamechamp. So I gt 80% of my cash back. For a game that came out in 2008, thats a DAMN good deal.

I did the same thing with Vanquish and I got 50 cents more than I would have gotten on Amazon.

To a degree, I can agree with you. Certian trade-in deals are great at gamestop. However, you really need to be searching for that extra special deal. For normal trade-ins, Amazon is superior.

Take you situation, for example. You received $11.20 for SR2. This was achieved with the extra 40% credit due to the deal in place (you pre-ordered Uncharted 3). If the deal was not going on, you would have instead earned only $11.20/1.4 = $8 in trade-in credit. The $10.75 you would have received from Amazon is not part of a promotion - that is simply there everyday deal.

Also, consider that Gamestop's deal required the pre-order of Uncharted 3. When you pick this up from Gamestop on release day, you will have to pay taxes which amount to a minimum of $4 extra dollars. The extra amount you gained from the Gamestop deal has now all but evaporated.

Lastly, Amazon almost always has better pre-order bonuses than Gamestop does. This is subjective to a degree, I realize, but I have bought most of my major release games from Amazon over the past year, and they usually come with a minimum $10 Amazon gift card (some high profile games come with a $20 gift card). When everything is taken into account, the deal at Gamestop does not look all that great.

However, I will concede the fact that with Gamestop, you can get the game immediately, whereas with Amazon you have to wait for the game to ship (although new releases are always in my mailbox on release day).

Edit - by the way, I agreed with your post, as you did make some valid points

LOGICWINS5439d ago

I think for buying games NEW, Amazon is better without a doubt. I got Yakuza 4 for $25 during the deal of the day promotion and I combined that with the "Buy 2 get one free" thing.

But your right, Amazon DOES have better everyday trade in deals. The thing is, I don't trade in games that often and Gamestop is just a couple blocks from my home. Its easier for me to just wait for good trade in deals to come by.

Hicken5439d ago

It's actually an extra 50% right now, provided you're buying a used game. We've been selling $1 PS2 games to people when they trade in, so they get a third more money for virtually nothing.

LOGICWINS5439d ago (Edited 5439d ago )

Yeah and I believe you also get 40% + $10 credit if you trade in 3 or more games towards Uncharted 3. I was stupid though. I traded in Vanquish, Saints Row 2, and COD 4 towards Uncharted 3 the week BEFORE the extra $10 deal came about.

But who knows, maybe the trade in values for the games that I traded in might have dropped dramatically between the time I sold them and the week the extra $10 credit promotion started.

Hicken5439d ago

Meh. They change the freakin values everyday, just like prices. I hate price changes. Good thing I only close, so I don't have to worry about doing them.

Bad thing is that the person who opens never gets around to it.

DFresh5439d ago

Neither.
Goozex has better trade in values for your games.

gnb20035438d ago

I never had any luck with those games trading sites. It always seems like in order to make a trade happen, it needs to be ridiculously lopsided (Like I have to trade in God of War 3 to get Resistance 1). Everyone there always wants something for nothing. Also, you have no clue what kind of condition the game your getting is in.

Never really tried Goozex though. May have to give it a shot.

SkittlesLikesPopcorn5438d ago (Edited 5438d ago )

You are wrong. You assume that $1 from amazon = 1$ from gamestop.

Thats not the case. Money gained from amazon can only go toward purchases on amazon website, and as you mentioned for gamestop the case is the same.

since amazon has better deals (generally cheaper prices) your $1 will go further there rather than gamestop.

If you are using gamestop you are losing out.

they were my of trade-in of choice up until last week. They were the goto place but their new condition system is extremely flawed. You're better off going back to gamestop.

I bought the 4gb 360 w/kinect bundle and traded in the kinect...They tried to tell me it was in "acceptable" condition and not "like new" which brings the trade-in credit down significantly.

the kicker here is that the game was still sealed and the cords were never unwrapped. A well placed facebook message was all it took for me to get it sold.

gnb20035439d ago

Interesting. I have only ran into this situation once, where I traded in a game I thought was in "Like New" condition, but was only given a "Very Good" score from Amazon. In this case, they reduced my credit earned by $0.75, which really didn't bother me much.

However, your situation is definitely a cautionary tale for those using Amazon. Thanks for the info, I will keep and eye out for this.

SageHonor5439d ago

Any game that im definately buying on release i go to gamestop.. Other than that i go to Amazon and i can get a new game cheaper than gamestop. For example a weeek after Alice madness returns came out i bought it from Amazon for 40 bucks new instead of 60 at gamestop

femshep5439d ago

i would like amazon if i didnt have to wait to get my game, im one of those want to play now people, i buy my games at target cause i hate gamestop

Titanz5439d ago

But buying used games, is a good reason to shop there.

-Off Topic-

You got soul, sista ;P

femshep5439d ago

lol

i don't buy used or trade in games so gamestop has no point for me

especially when every time ive tried to go there they never had sealed copies of games i need my games sealed when bought

Neko_Mega5439d ago

Amazon is good online but GameStop is better for the fact you can just go to their store and get it.

But not all GameStops have workers that are smart or nice, are's has half & half right now. Sad part is the guy that has no idea about any other system but 360 is going to try to be a manager.

He didn't know PS3 uses a 2.5 hard drive (Or even the fact that you can replace the hard drive and it doesn't break warrity), plus he things Move works like the Wii remote.

Yeah he isn't to bright, plus my preorder on Elder Scolls 5th A. E.D. he end up changing it from 360 to PS3 (I wanted it on 360) and he has done that to alot of other people.

Hicken5439d ago

Sounds like our new boss. Just hope he doesn't get it: GS only cares about numbers now (reserves and new GS cards), so they'll promote anybody who's got that going for them. Hence why we have the boss we have now, instead of somebody knowledgeable about games.

Neko_Mega5438d ago

The company yeah, some of the works only care about games. Which is why I keep making alot friends because my love for video games.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio39d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing39d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9239d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit39d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing39d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9239d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
