Has Bioware lost its edge??

Over the years, bioware has been lauded as one of the best developers out there. But, lately they seem to have lost both their high standards and their loyal fanbase.

yes, they have because put mainstream greed over their fanbase...

led10905439d ago

i'm not sure about that, but they have definitely erred somewhere or the other

Yi-Long5439d ago

... when you start milking them with DLC.

I know I'm not buying any of their games until the 'GOTY'/Complete edition gets released, otherwise I'd have to spend over a 100 bucks or something, which I'm not gonna do.

I agreed with Bioware when they took a jab at FF13 for not being much of an RPG. But at the same time it's quite a bit hypocritical of them to dilute the "RPG" in their games (see DA2).

ME2 was great but it lacked some things from ME1. And now ME3 will lack even more RPG elements in exchange for a more straightforward mainstream non-RPG-like approach.
It'll be like Gears in space with dialogue trees....or something.
I hope not.

im play dragon age 2 right now
and while its a fun game it has it flaws

first of all the environments looks a bit bland and repetitive sometimes
and the are just copied and pasted over and over and over with name changes
half way through the game you'll be already saw everything
and even if you entered a new place
just expect the same thing with a name change
so expect to get board with the environments half way through

your party AI sometimes is TOO DAMN stupid

sometimes the game is to easy sometimes its (demon souls) hard
so you don't know what to expect in battles

in act 2
there is way less side missions then act 1
in act 1 the game feels beefy with a lot of things to do in it
in act 2 the game feels skinny and there is almost nothing but few side missions

im downloading the first dragon age now
and im getting the rest of ME games later on

so, so far
DA2 is a fun game and i'd give it an 8

did play some ME2 and the games feels fun too so im cool with Bioware
but they need to fix few things here and there and show more love to PC gamers

since there is NO MODs and no HD textures (we have to download a 1gig file and install it)

and DX11 is broken in the game (game keeps crashing)
add to that there is not much difference when you turn on DX11

thats all i got to say

"i'm not sure about that, but they have definitely erred somewhere or the other "

read your article. you're trying to hint at making ToR pc exclusive is what made Bioware lose its edge.

I'm in Beta and can confirm without a shadow of a doubt that all their talent has gone to working on ToR. It definitely will be what SoTOR fans are looking for.

If they brought this to console. Just about everything that is enthralling in ToR has to be stripped down or gutted due to hardware limitations

Dragon Age 2 is definitely flawed but to say it isn't as rpg-ish as the first is just silly. In terms of game mechanics the games are pretty much identical. The only changes were the removal of companion clothing.

Mass effect was always about the shooting even in the first one. They just made it better in the second. The only things they really removed were alll the weapons and mods and characters had less abilities. Cadey Hudsen said both of these are returning for ME3 so I don't see what the problem is.

k4rma5438d ago

No so much its edge as lost its RPG.

There are and will be better shooters than ME3 on the market. And tbh with a shooter, I want a slightly brisker pacing than sitting around in-between combat to chit chat with NPC's. Thats the sort of thing I like in RPG's.

And if they wanna make proper shooters then they should just go ahead and start over with a first person shooter, without all the clunky mechanics left over from their RPG design roots.

zeal0us5439d ago

DA3 will have
-more duck and cover mechanics
-less armor
-less weapons
-but it will be mainstream!!!
-lets not forget about less skills&talents

its ME2 all over again...Yes I'm joking

But really it does seem like they lost their edge
look @ ME1 then ME2
then look @ DA1 then DA2

Yeah you should notice a difference....just saying.

darksied5438d ago

I do. I think you meant to say you don't.

Lord_Sloth5438d ago

I do as well. DA3 is a chance for them to redeem themselves. If they don't, oh well.

firemassacre5439d ago

Max_Dissatisfaction

yea they lost there edge when mass effect 2 turned out to be Superior on PS3?

led10905439d ago

Haha don't turn it into a console war....on the other hand please do it my article will get more hits rofl

firemassacre5439d ago (Edited 5439d ago )

"i" turned this into a console war? pfft, whatever its not worth it.
anyways i would like bioware to add more rpg elements into the game

edit@led1090 its also great on 360, fair enough :)

led10905439d ago

You're not turning it by yourself, but when people read your comment, they'll just read superior on ps3. Thats enough for them to make this another flame thread hahaha

firemassacre5439d ago (Edited 5439d ago )

ok, its also decent on 360 . fair enough :)

Mass Effect - N7 DAY 2025

Bioware writes: "Like you, we’ve heard the rumors lately. You’ve made it clear you care deeply about what’s next. So let’s start by setting the record straight: the next Mass Effect game is in development, and EA and BioWare remain committed to telling more stories in this universe."

I expected nothing and I'm still disappointed

Like with Fallout, it's starting to feel studios are using TV / Film adaptations when they have no game info to talk about.

toxic-inferno190d ago

I feel the same way.

I mean, how difficult would it be for them to release SOMETHING of substance? Another short trailer? A couple of proper hints? A short story set during the original trilogy, but focused on fringe characters?

Hopefully they're working so hard on the game that they don't have time. But still, with every passing year and so little to show, the franchise will be slipping further and further from people's minds.

Profchaos189d ago

Yeah agree it's almost a cop out since Dev times are 5 to 10 years just throw out a few seasons instead you get them done in a year

jznrpg190d ago

I still haven’t beat Andromeda. I am waiting for a lull of good games in my backlog

P_Bomb190d ago

So the TV show will take place after the OG trilogy. I wonder which ending they’ll use?

Rebel_Scum189d ago

Should’ve just posted a picture of an Elcor saying “regretfully, we have nothing to share.”

BioWare needs to follow Larian’s lead and just “embrace people’s cool choices”, veteran EA developer

Speaking on a recent episode of the FRVR Podcast, veteran EA developer Alex Hutchinson—who worked on The Sims 2, Spore and Army of Two: The 40th Day—explained that the studio is already no longer the studio fans fell in love with, but it should be safe from censorship of its games’ political beliefs.

contra157190d ago

Who didn’t see this coming lol

Armaggedon189d ago

BioWare should find the center and focus. Chasing someone else’s shadow will likely lead to failure.

What the EA deal could mean for BioWare, The Sims, and more

If you’re worried about EA’s future, you’re in good company. The acquisition is unprecedented on many levels, and it throws the future of EA's studios and some of its biggest franchises —including BioWare, The Sims, Apex Legends, and Battlefield — into doubt. Industry analysts have varying predictions about what could come next. However, there are a few constants — namely, that EA will likely implement large-scale spending reductions and sell off its less profitable studios.

thorstein220d ago

How can you be an analyst and not look at Tencent and know exactly what's about to happen: massive layoffs, decline in quality, and loss revenue.

It is Toys R Us all over again, and JCPenney and Sears and so many more. EA lost is vision before 2000. It's an old stodgy corporation. It's not going to recover.

Retroman219d ago

If Ea sell studio that develop NFS wishful thinking Saudi investers put Blackbox studio back together. get rid of online racing, drive to a race or no races at all wasting time playing nfs for NO reason at all thanks to Unbound, Heat, Payback, Rivals.

anast219d ago

They'll start working on FIFA, Madden, UFC, and some mobile games.

gold_drake219d ago

i think that games that are not Sports games or Shooters will cease to exist, since they are the big money makers.

not sure why anyone would agree to this. especially to rich saudis of all people ha they have more money than they'll ever need
