I wonder if id will do something special for the 15th anniversary.

Quake invented almost everything there in regards to being an online FPS. 3D acceleration, netcode optimization, server browser, team fortress, the grappling hook, the entire concept of online competitive clans/squads...all came from Quake. F-ing incredible when you think about it.

I don't think I'll live long enough to see a game that is more innovative.

Don't forget CTF, Rocket Arena (1v1 arena play), rocket jumping and bunny-hopping, mod servers... God I miss the glory days of PC FPS gaming. Team Fortress and Quake 2 CTF may have eaten an entire year of my gaming life.

I'm going to start playing through it again. I wish I could set up a server and have an old-school fragfest, but I have no internet at home and no one plays Quake anymore :(

I often have a go on Quake Live, still great fun to this day.

"being able to buy/sell the maps they created"... So not all like CoD Elite, then?

It's fun to play pretend, but in a time when the average internet connection was around 28.8kbps (about 8 naked per night to those of you who want a practical metric), persistent online meta data was not really going to be used.

Quake was most popular with the LAN crowd. So when you all get together coding the infrastructure of online sharing is a waste when you can simply exchange floppy disks or cd roms.

Quake Demake Is only 13 Kilobytes in Size

triverse writes, "When you think of demakes you probably think of newer games on older hardware. Probably because that is how they occur more often. Another type of demake is made for the same platform just a different graphics style (many remakes offer this option at the flick of a button). What if I told you someone made Quake, but it is only 13 kilobytes in size. For comparison that is about one quarter the size of the original Super Mario Bros on the Nintendo Entertainment System. The kicker is, this version of Quake looks amazing, and everything explodes into gibs everywhere."

I've looked and wished we never did get here.
