yeah, i know i'm going to get knocked down for this, but i believe what he says. he has worked on both platforms and has written a blog detailing what he believes to be true about the development for ps3 games. with so many ports being inferior on ps3 compared to it's counter-part, how can any reasonable person believe that these aren't very real possibilities as to why? he obviously has technical knowledge of programming and developing on the ps3 and the 360. i own a ps3 and only a few games because in all honesty i find the games on the ps3 to be less quality then the 360 by a mile. that may change next year but with the exception of littlebigplanet, there are no games that i absolutely feel i must have. of course i'll get mgs4 and ffXIII and others, but i also know as soon as i have gotten through those games i will be back on my 360.

Afaik the average speed on SL DVD´s is more or less the same as Blu-Ray. On dual layer DVD´s Blu-Ray has a slight advantage.

This seems fishy. Then how come so many games on the ps3 run at 720,1080i, and 1080p, and most 360 games are lower than that. Look at halo 3. Plus Have they played ninja gaiden sigma or especially rachet and clank where there is almost 0 load times, from gameplay to cutscene and zero loud time from area to area. I remembering playing guitar hero on my ps2 and it still had load times. Its not like those games had great graphics to begin with.

Half of those ports are games that even 360 owners wouldn't have bought if they had better choices early on (example fear and Saints Row). Oblivion, according to gamespot (oooooh gamespot) runs and loads better and faster than 360 (they have on video too...ooooh)so..whatever. MGS4 and FFXIII and VERSUS are three examples of third party exclusives to PS3 that will: a.) sell better than any third party exclusive 360 game and b.) will demonstrate to the world how great games from real third party developers run on PS3 (example Capcom, rockstar, Square Enix). Even Capcom said that DMC4 has no differences. GTA IV, a real seller, we will see how they feel next year. This is sooo a 2007 statement, bring on 2008! PS3 games will not be in the shadow of the 360 or wii next year. This is no flaim, PS3 will also have their share of first party (4-15 million unit sellers, example (LittleBigPlanet, Gran Turismo 5) this generation. And when I talk about third party, I mean third party developer exclusives (like the blockbuster Bioshock which will be the top selling third party exclusive game on 360) not Oblivion or a franchise like Gears which is owned by Microsoft first party.

Developers that build their game from ground up to utilize the hardware, are the ones who create great games for both systems. The so called "lazy developers" that develop games on the 360 hardware and then port it to the PS3, are the ones who encounter problems.

In the future, ps3 or not, if you are a game developer you are going to have to learn how to program and program well on a muticore cpu. Be it PC, PS3, or some as yet unknown future console.

He's not saying the PS3 is inferior, he's saying that for a developer to get the same results of an x360 game on a PS3 game, it would take more resources like money, time, and more developers and looking this from a business stand point is not a good thing.

Why would a developer spend more resources on a game for PS3 when, a) They could use it to work on another games development and b) PS3 game aren't selling so there is no incentive for them. They wont spend time and money on a game when PS3 owner are not buying games. Its simple.

But his opinion has more weight than any of yours. He's a dev! He's worked on 360 and PS3. How many of you can say you've done that? Sounds like he's venting, and he's not the first one to do so concerning the difficulties surrounding the PS3. He's not trashing the console. If you read it, you'll see that he's responding to all the little fanbabies complaining about all the PS3 ports and such. Why should they put more resources into the PS3 version in order to make it run as good as the 360 version? Especially considering the installed base and attach rate of the PS3. Don't attack the devs. It's not their fault. They only have so much time and money. Be grateful that you get the games at all.

It is true, The GPU in the 360 uses unified shading technology that will operate at almost 100% efficiency at all times. The RSX GPU in the PS3 does not, it will operate at about 60% efficiency.

It isn't a big industry secret that the "Cell" isn't a games processor. It is a server or multimedia processor. The SPU's primary purpose is for imaging of Bluray movies. Sony did not choose the Cell bc it is a great gaming processor, they chose it push their Bluray agenda. Sure it can run game code but not as well as it can play HD movies. Isn't it kind of funny how developers are constantly bashing the Cell? The Cell will spend it's life as a crutch for the RSX's shortcomings. That is for the developers that even take the time to use it. The only game I know of that the Cell is used to render graphics is Warhawk.

Not to mention most developers don't want to break down their gaming code into small fragments to run on the SPU's. Sony just wanted to have a processor that could render graphics. Much like the "Emotion Engine" in the PS2. They don't like paying other companies to make hardware for them. The Cell on it's own wasn't powerful enough so they added the RSX. The whole architecture is a programmers nightmare. Using CPU's to render graphics is nothing new, what do you people think PC's did before Graphics Cards were even around??

These are truths about Playstation 3 development supported by the constant delays and inferior ports of Xbox 360 games. Time and time again, you hear this type of news from developers. Developers can tell you this until they are sick in the face and most of you fanboys will continue to deny it.

3 good examples of 5-15 million selling third party exclusive PS3 games that will look as good as they run. The best port was Oblivion...ran better on PS3 anyway back in April. The worst port..who the F&%$ cares...no money to u. PS3 by the end of this generation will have the most successful third party exclusives plus the better looking ones. Period. This statement is sooo 2007.

Is that there are some definte facts here, but they are mixed with some obvious bias, so a little harder to beleive. But he is far from the first person in the industry to say the same thing-- John Carmack of ID and Gabe Newell from Valve, 2 very well known and well respected members of the development community have said much the same thing. Guess what- both are developing for the PS3. The point is, that games developed for both systems that are "started" on the 360 and then "ported" to the PS3 will always look better on 360-- look at the PS2 to Xbox games last time around. But developers that design a game for only the PS3, Resistance, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet, and Uncharted-- these games look fantastic. (on a side note, however, I still do not think that they look "better" than games designed for 360 only, Gears, Halo 3, etc.) Then we have the oft-mentioned COD 4. It looks and plays great on both systems-- but is basically 2 different games, one made specifically for PS3 and one for 360, that just look and play the same. If all games on both platforms were developed like this, you would notice fewer differences between PS3 and 360 versions. BUT, it costs more money and takes more time to do so. Sorry, kids, to let you in on this, but the videogame industry is about making money-- developers and publishers, as well as retailers, are out to make money. I know, its a big shock, but it is also why cross-platform games on PS3 and 360 ARE NOT developed separately in most cases-- it costs TOO MUCH MONEY for what they will get back. No one can claim the PS3 is selling as good as Sony hoped and predicted; so spending extra time and money to make a better version of a PS3 game is not worth it. Lets just hope that the PS3 versions of cross-platform games (the orange box, fatal inertia, etc.) that have been delayed are being polished up, not just pushed back in hope of larger install base....

Like it or not, EA developers have said it, Take2 developers have said it, Capcom and several others. I tend to believe them. I stopped right there with you. I don't mind when you state your opinion, which you are entitled to. However, when you start claiming facts, you are no different than Nasim when he states facts. As for the article, what does this even mean. Straight forward, someone who used to work for Harmonix doesn't like the PS3. Claiming that the 360's resolution will/is higher than the Ps3's, well that was proven wrong over and over. It's hard to take him seriously when I see games like Ratchet&Clank and Uncharted. Especially R&C, which was completed in about a year with that much polish(not saying it is perfect though).

Granted that the PS3 Blu-ray is a little slower then the DVD drive, but with a standard HDD, some games will install a game cache to help with load time, yeah waiting five minutes for an install to take place can be a drag to some. But its a one time thing and load times are pretty good.

Again for load times the PS3 has a standard HDD that can have a game cache installed and so what if some developers have to copy their data 2-3 times (12 has never been done, if you can prove me wrong with a link from a valid gamer website then I will take it as is) if it helps with load times and the games performance then whats the problem, if its okay for a a 360 game to compress data to fit and perform on the 360 why isn't fair game for PS3 developers to use the tools they have.
and a side question how many 360 games would fit on a DVD if not compressed?

He started this article with trying to convince people that devlopers are not to blame. Well this line just didn't do it for me. IT's no big secret that the PS3 can not run the same code as the 360, there for making it "harder" to develop for. But this can apply to just about any type of programming. Windows code will not run on a Apple OS or on a Unix system and vice-versa and interchangeable. So what to do? code for the different OS's. Just like you have to program for MAC or windows, it would make sense that Code made for the 360 runs better on the 360 then the PS3 and vice-versa.

And how about we ask Hideo Kojima what "sacfices" he has had to make. last time I checked he was doing just fine and acutally wanted a bigger Blu-Ray disc.

It is way too early to tell if the 360 ports will be better in the future. They have not programed mulit-plat games seperately, they are ported to the ps3 so of course they will be better. They just recently started to program seperately for both systems from scratch (COD4) (Assasins Creed).

You call the comments stupid and uninformed and the make a stupid one yourself. Halo spits out frames at 640p how the hell are you combining the two frames to make one. Bungie said its 640p that means that there are to different frames alternating one at a time not combining thats retarded they still come out one at a time our eyes combine them because the carry image information for so long while receiving new images but each frame coming out is 640p. Frame 1 using lighting 1 frame 2 uses lighting 2 then frame 3 goes back to lighting 1. Mention its fun says its a great game with tons of features but don't make an ass of yourself calling people dumb and then following suit.

Look we can all debate which is more powerful, etc. Probably 99% of us wont change our minds no matter how many good / bad points are thrown from each side.

It is noteworthy though that this developer has publically spoken. It's noteworthy because ( although some hear would argue ) he has credibility in the industry when it comes to the eyes of Joe Public and the lessor informed press core, etc. Right or wrong...he has taken issue with the PS3 and felt motivated enough to publically post on his own blog site. That is a pretty powerful thing to do when we all know how volatile this industry and fans are when it comes to outspoken developers (...see Jaffee).

What this really tells me is.... Sony still has a major PR issue with some of the 3rd party developers. I could be wrong but I have yet to ever hear anyone crack like this on the 360 or the Wii in terms of the way you have to develop for it. Sure I have heard "it could only be done on this system" type comments...but none of the magnitude of "it stinks" kind of level which we read here. And he isnt the first...

This is an issue...and its an issue that Sony themselves really need to spend the time on to clean up if they can. Perception is huge...and perception right now is the PS3 continues to be a difficult machine to work with. I have been to IBM website and downloaded the information about the cell chip. It is incredible. Yes it will take time to really get alot out of it but at least Sony is not taking long to produce good quality games. Ratchet and Clank: Future would have taken till the end of the PS2 lifespan to come out. It is already before the PS3 has turned one. Incredible. The RSX chip was built to handle all the graphics so that dude needs to go re-educate himself.
