EA wants 'open gaming platform'

Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo should abandon the console wars and help build a common gaming platform, a senior executive at Electronic Arts has said.

Gerhard Florin said incompatible consoles made life harder for developers and consumers.

"We want an open, standard platform which is much easier than having five which are not compatible," said EA's head of international publishing.

He said the web and set-top boxes would grow in importance to the industry.

"We're platform agnostic and we definitely don't want to have one platform which is a walled garden," said Mr Florin.

EA currently produces games for more than 14 different gaming systems, including consoles, portable devices and PCs.

"I am not sure how long we will have dedicated consoles - but we could be talking up to 15 years," Mr Florin added.

so that they will only have to design a game once and then take all your money with as little effort as possible from their side?

Skerj6713d ago

That is SO what went through my head when I read it, and you said it sir. Bubbles+

marinelife96713d ago

We all have wants EA. We want decent freaking games from you! We want a decent football game, basketball game, racing game, golf game... But as the Stones would say. You can't always get what you want.

JsonHenry6713d ago

This sort of statement makes me hate EA.

gaffyh6713d ago

Damn EA, I blame them for all the problems in the world

dantesparda6713d ago

People, i dont care for EA either, but why all the hate? You people on this site just love to hate! Whether its Sony or MS, or PS3 or 360, or Nintendo or its Wii, whether its fanboys or people who dont care for video games quite that much. You all just love to hate something.

And to EA, there already exists a platform like that, and its called the PC, the best platform in the world! But unfornately, people are scared off by computers, cuz they dont know how to install drivers or programs/applications. Or know how to fix things on a PC when sh!t goes wrong. Or fine tune them by removing all the unecessary programs and processes and services that are running, and the list goes on. So hence the dumb masses love for consoles

I wish there was only 1 gaming platform and that both sony and microsoft and nintendo developed games for it .

Sounds more like communism economy in practice. A mono culture that is.

Capt CHAOS6713d ago

Who gets the money for the game then?
The hardware is sold at loss, cost or little profit. The money is in the license for games.

Capt CHAOS6713d ago

If the are writing games for multiple platforms, how hard for them to port to their own console so they can get all the money? Infact, they could probably team up with Intel and a few other large publishers to do this..

hardcorehippiez6713d ago (Edited 6713d ago )

we all know how that system would turn out knowing full well that they are even too lazy to port a game .

Lanontscuz6713d ago

we will lose all competition from the main console makers

EZCheez6713d ago

I want EA to make awesome games, but we all know some things will never happen.

gamesblow6713d ago

EA with more absurd **** to say. I hope this never comes to pass while I'm a gamer.
