Streamlining Skyrim’s Stats

Ever since Bethesda Studios announced that the upcoming addition to the Elder Scrolls series would have only 3 attributes (Health, Magicka, and Stamina), the internet has been facing a massive storm of “hardcore” fans berating Bethesda for “dumbing down” the role playing game series. But are these claims justified? Furthermore, what exactly should video game stats and attributes be? Is streamlining this aspect of the game a good idea, or should developers maintain a more traditional multitude of different statistics?

Americans have been dumbing down the RPG genre for a LONG time I don't call these games RPGS anymore games like Mass Effect etc I call Action Games with "RPG Elements" now as RPG elements can break a game if not done properly and seems devs just CBA with it anymore.

"Americans" as in the entire Western RPG tradition? JRPG's gradually put a greater emphasis on stats and leveling, but the amount of choice, interaction and lore associated with WRPG's these days sets them firmly in the classical definition of "RPG," really more-so than JRPG's.

While I like action games with RPG elements, I prefer how complicated true role playing games can be. It's almost like it's becoming a lost art. How about we all go back to games that use THACO?

Just as long as Skyrim's streamlining doesn't leave it with an experience devoid of joy (like Dragon Age 2 and its dead city of Mannequins - even Two Worlds 2 had cities and towns that felt alive with people walking around). I'll keep my fingers crossed in hope that Skyrim delivers.

The "biggest change" I like, is how they reduced the attributes down to 3. Makes things a "no-brainer" when it comes to investing those points.

Really...so by attributes they mean these ones

Agility
Endurance
Intelligence
Luck
Personality
Speed
Strength
Willpower

.......so they don't even exist in the Skyrim in another shape or form. Thats it....their gone. Well that sucks, that was the best part about the character customization at the start, which ones you were going to give a bonus to.

Well, I am guessing, they just amalgamated a few of them together.. or something.

If memory serves correctly, I think they reduced it down to Endurance, Magic, Agility and Strength.

Todd Howard said, that the reason behind the reduction is, (for example) most people put points into Willpower, which ultimately, they intend to bump up Magic... or something like that.

To be quite honest, I can see advantages to both ways (keeping the originals versus the reduction), but I'm REALLY surprised they removed Luck. Luck is so... versatile!

I wouldn't mind if it ended up being like Fallout 3 where you just added points onto the skills.

I suppose it's so people can be a theif but still manage to boost their magic up so they can deal powerful spells. I mean in Oblivion it was etheir one or the other. If you picked a warrior or theif you'd only have shitty spells because your magic would still be low.

Im glad he leaving. Bethesda has been terrible under his leadership. Redfall, Starfield, Fallout76 and the list goes on an on. His leadership style is outdated. Hopefully, MS bring someone in that knows what they are doing.

I will give you Fallout 76, but Redfall and Starfield's blame needs to fall somewhat on the terrible Xbox publishing team. With all their resources and supposed smarts...they fungled it.

Maybe they can go to their earlier purchases for replacements . Like Rare devs , Gear devs or 343, one of the very few studios they built up and man they are great.

But let's be real. Xbox was in charge of redfall and Starfield. They just don't know what a good game looks like.

I interviewed at Bethesda once, and while there were some very smart mid level team members, the upper ranks (EP/VP/Studio Head) were a total boys' club. The Madmen series ego in that lunch was stiffling.

Pete Hines was against locking out the majority of their console playerbase (ps gamers). Probably disgusted at the hypocrisy of white knight Phil assuring PS gamers that they can still play COD. Acquisition goes through, Hines goes out.
