CVG - Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Can it top Oblivion?

CVG - If Bethesda manages to channel the spirit of Oblivion into its sequel, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be the best game on Xbox. No maybes, no disclaimers, no back tracking... this will be the game everything else must beat.

The proof is in the world. It's so detailed, the designers have gone in and changed the weights of tree branches to govern how much or little they sway in the wind. It's so vast, it's impossible to see everything it has to offer. Ever. It's so beautiful you'll be sorry to turn off your console and go outside. And it's so rich, Bethesda's created an entire language from the bottom up, just to imbue the land with a believable history.

Certainly, the question is can it top Morrowind

Same as below. Just because Obivion didn't beat MW doesn't mean Skyrim can't. Atleast we're assured a good game.

Yeah sure... to the haters of Oblivion.. I played Both Morrowind and Oblivion. Although same changes were mind, Oblivion was still a stellar and amazing game, take your crap somewhere else.

As For Skyrim hope it tops Morrowind and Oblivion, as they BOTH WERE AWESOME.

I love the combat in Oblivion and the world was great, but the game felt a little to repetative for me. There were not as many WTF moments as in Morrowind. I am hoping the greatness in quest variety as in Fallout 3 will transition over to SKYRIM. I don't want Dragon hunting to replace portal hopping from ESIV and have them tack on more fetch quests. Variety is the key.
If these games fit on one DVD btw, I wonder if they can add the modded Morrowind as DLC and really allow the world to expand.

BeastlyRig5515d ago

yeah oblivion was a step back from morrowind..

SephireX5515d ago

Oblivion was a step forward from Morrowind. Morrowind had no fast travel, the environments were dreary, the enemies and caves were repetitive and the combat was worse than that of Oblivion. So how was Oblivion a step back? Sure there was less freedom in Oblivion but everything else was better imo.

PrimordialSoupBase5515d ago

Oblivion has an absolutely terrible level scaling system in which, at higher levels, random generic bandits wield extremely high level weapons and armour. There is absolutely no sense of progression or achievement. Worse is that Oblivion's world is pure mundane fantasy, not a single bit of originality or variety.

SephireX5515d ago

Though it was still better than Morrowind.

ClydeRadcliffe5515d ago

I see no reason at all why this can't go on to be the best in the series to be honest

VampiricDragon_5515d ago

the question should be can it top morrowwind.

Oblivion for the most part was a mess

VampiricDragon_5515d ago (Edited 5515d ago )

the combat was boring ( single person is boring enough as it is, but when the only comands are attack and magic and both are boring you have combat issues. ), the 10 enemies that there were it seemed like were generic, the world aside from the cities was lifeless (forest and cave as far as the eye can see), the story was boring has hell.

kingdavid5515d ago

meh I have the complete opposite opinion on all those factors but each to their own.

emekcrash5515d ago

@VampiricDragon_

The combat was sure 100x better in Morrowind! Oh wait, it was horrible and stiff.

OH BOY MORROWIND IS A MASSIVE WASTELAND WITH BIG MUSHROOMS THAT MAKES IT SO UNIQUE. Oblivion is GENERIC. It has a LotR type of environment. The differences were there, but subtle.

And the story was bad in Morrowind too, but that's up to opinion.

Basically, MW is better but you just listed the wrong things. MW has more depth and is more complex. Oblivions leveling sucks and so on and so forth.

BeastlyRig5515d ago

I think he's talking about gamplay! not morrowind's screen shots..

Plus The witcher 2 might rape it combat wise if it's anything like oblivion..

i agree oblivion was inferior to Morrowind , while still good .

If anyone did that nowadays , there would mostly be complaints ... just like what happened with da2 for good and bad reasons alike .

ASSASSYN 36o5515d ago

100% agree with Vamp. Oblivion was cute and all... but it was a downgrade in game play with too many restrictions. I had a stupidly powerful spell in morrowind. I tried to make a similar spell in Oblivion and the game had restricted it's power. I could jump across the world in morrowind. Yet in Oblivion I couldn't get 5 feet. Two diametrically opposed games. I want morrowind gameplay in Skyrim.

wwm0nkey5515d ago

The real question is if it can top Morrowind. Oblivion was god awful compared to the likes of Morrowind.

Kee5515d ago

If it's to be better than Oblivion it simply has to fix a few things and add in all the things they said they would.
Here's what they need to fix:
1) Glitches and bugs.
2) Voice acting- Hire more voice talent.
3) Make the human characters look human.

Apart from those things, it looks like it could be the perfect game.

VampiricDragon_5515d ago

it really doesnt.......the combat looks boring, the quests look boring........

dont be foole dby how something looks on the outside

Kee5515d ago

Well, each to their own, I guess. But I still have to say I'm pretty damn excited for this one.
But, I want to ask how you made these observations. Is there some new gameplay footage I don't know about?

MoreRPG5515d ago

if bethesda fix those problems i think skyrim should be a great contender for game of the year

they can't get a 14 year old game to run smoothly?

jjb1981170d ago

That's ridiculous, lol. I'm waiting for the guy that says its too cpu-intensive for the Switch 2. This game is old af and has been released like 17 times.
