It only took common sense to deduct that it would still have backwards compatibility considering its done using SOFTWARE on the new machines..

WOW THIS IS GREAT NEWS.... b4 they said the 40gb PS3 would not have backwards compatibility ... and i got really pissed as a PS3 owner, and Sony fan ... that IT WOULD NOT SELL if u couldnt play ps1 and ps2 games.... and i was like SONY NO ONE WILL BUY IT .. IT CANT PLAY OLD GAMES.... ... this solves that problem and now im happy Sony didnt make that dumb move ... thats good this 40 gb model and the price cut will def help Sony out :)

how hard to add BC, BC is software-emulated. It will be there, just limited.

I can't believe any one really thought they wouldn't have BC. Sony started BC in consoles and has been a selling feature since they started. I mean why wouldn't Sony want people to play the huge list of games (what is it, like 2000 now) they already made.

I knew they wouldn't get rid of the backward compatibility, it would have been a really bad move on their part if they did but good work SONY.

I was honestly hoping to continue to see a tight race between the 360 and ps3. But sony has a strong user install base and I think the 40 gb model is finally gonna start tapping into it. It'll be interesting to see how or if Microsoft reacts...

Why the hell do you people care so much about backwards compatibility? I will never play another PS2 or original xbox game again, because they look like garbage compared to games on the new generation of consoles. Do you people still have copies of FFX laying around? Why would you? If you haven't passed a game that is years old by now, you will never pass it. Move the hell on. Thats the whole point of getting a new system.

but i'm guessing anything old to you gets thrown out with the bath water.grandparents,cars,antiqu es,games,etc.

getting new things is fine.but you don't have to drop what you like that isn't new.plus,you can upscale the picture of the older games to make them look better.can't do that with ps1 or ps2 systems.

@ Gamespot-equals-EGM. I wish on principle alone that the 40GB has BC slapped right in that little mean puppy, so that he'll melt and wash away like the wicked witch of the East.

What ever sony come out with a new SKU now or never, no one talked so far of potential failure of that machine on hardware side. They have it build on another manifacturer, I will just wait and see it is any good quality to buy it.

Every console should have the same specs regardless of hard drive size.No cutting out usb ports,backwards comp. shouldnt even need to be discussed.It should be the same console less 20gb.

20 hours after this article was written that claimed the 40GB PS3 would include backward compatibility, it was 100% confirmed by Sony that the 40GB PS3 would NOT include any kind of backward compatibility...not through hardware or software!

Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.

So now there's certifiable proof that Ryan was in fact "fired", as opposed to when it was first announced that he "retired", in order to save face.

There's another guy who recently "retired" as CEO of another large gaming company, after doing a dismantling job as lead for well over a decade.

seems legit, the business man, fires the one who has ideas to move the business forward.

Jim Ryan is the reason why we are entering year 6 since the PS5 launch and many of us don't feel like the PS5 has gotten started as yet.

I hope going forward, we will see a return to form.
